Most PCs do not need a dedicated sound card if their audio already works and the available connections and features meet your needs. Consider buying one only after you identify a specific shortfall—such as a missing connection, channel feature, or headphone-amplifier capability—and rule out Windows settings, cables, and driver problems first.
Start by identifying what is wrong or missing
Be specific before shopping. Is there no sound, is the wrong device playing, is output too quiet or distorted, do you need a microphone input you do not have, or are you looking for a particular connection or channel arrangement? A dedicated card is relevant when your current setup lacks a capability you can name—not simply because a PC has onboard audio.
There is no comparative listening test or measurement in the sources cited here showing that a dedicated card universally sounds better than motherboard audio or a USB device. Choose based on the problem your hardware needs to solve.
Rule out Windows and connection problems first
Check the selected output and volume
In Windows 10 or 11, open Settings > System > Sound and select the output you intend to use. USB and HDMI audio devices can appear as choices; make sure the intended one is selected as the output or default device. Inspect cables, jacks, and enhancements
Confirm speakers or headphones are plugged into the correct jack and that cables are secure. Some systems use green for audio output and pink for microphone input; others label the jacks. Temporarily turn off audio enhancements if they may be contributing to the problem. These checks can resolve issues that do not call for new hardware.
If Windows does not show an output device
A missing device may reflect detection or driver trouble rather than a need for an add-in card. Microsoft says Windows may not detect an audio output when its required driver is missing, outdated, disabled, or not loading correctly. Follow Microsoft’s missing or undetected audio output steps: check Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers, show hidden devices, scan for hardware changes, and confirm the device is enabled. Get the driver for the exact PC or sound-card model from its manufacturer, restart, and run the Windows audio troubleshooter.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s troubleshooting pages. When checking a driver, verify that it supports your specific Windows version; the end of Windows 10 support by itself does not establish that you need new audio hardware.
Decide whether there is a genuine hardware gap
Once setup and drivers are ruled out, write down the capability your current audio setup lacks. It might be an input or output connector, a required channel configuration, or headphone amplification suited to your headphones. Then compare the options against that requirement rather than assuming an internal card is automatically the answer.

For example, ASUS’s Xonar DG user manual describes that particular product as a PCI 5.1 card with a headphone amplifier. That documents the features of one model; it does not establish that the card is currently available, compatible with your PC or operating system, or preferable for your use.

Use your actual connections and constraints to compare possible solutions. An internal card may be worth considering when its supported features address a specific shortfall and it fits the PC. An external USB audio device is another option when its connections and capabilities suit the need. Existing motherboard audio remains a sensible choice when it already provides the inputs, outputs, and performance you require.
