Start with reversible checks before assuming your earbuds are broken: reseat them, try compatible tips, inspect and gently clean the sound outlet, test another audio source, and check device settings, charge, and connection. If the same problem persists across sources after model-specific troubleshooting, contact the manufacturer; these checks can narrow the cause, but they cannot prove a failed driver.
Start by describing the symptom
Note whether the sound is muffled, unusually quiet, distorted, intermittent, or absent, and whether it affects one earbud or both. Also note when it began—for example, after changing tips, getting the earbuds wet, installing an update, or switching playback devices.
Compare left and right at a comfortable listening level. Avoid raising the volume to compensate before checking for an obstruction or a left-right balance setting.

Reseat both earbuds as the product manual describes, and confirm that each detachable tip is attached correctly. Try other compatible tip sizes if available. The two ears may need different sizes: Sony’s IER-M500 guidance notes that the optimal tip size can differ between the left and right ears. Bose also recommends trying another tip or stability-band size when fit, comfort, or sound is not as expected.

If your model offers a fit or seal test, follow the manufacturer’s app instructions. If the sound changes after reseating or changing tips—especially bass, perceived loudness, or noise reduction—that is useful evidence that fit may contribute. It is not a universal test for a hardware fault.
Inspect the tips and sound outlet
Wax, dirt, moisture, or a damaged tip can alter or reduce output and resemble a device fault. Remove detachable tips only as the manufacturer directs, then check the tips and mesh for debris, tears, deformation, or moisture.

Cleaning advice is model-specific. For example, Sony’s IER-M500 instructions say to lightly rotate a cotton swab over the removed tip’s mesh, warn against pushing sharp objects such as toothpicks or pen tips into it, and recommend replacing tips that are cracked, peeling, chipped, or torn. For moisture in that model’s sound-tube outlet, Sony says to point it downward and lightly tap it against a dry cloth about five times. Do not treat those directions as universal instructions for other earbuds.

Bose identifies the integrated wax guards in QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) tips as components that can clog and directs owners to the model’s cleaning instructions. Use the cleaning procedure for your exact product; do not apply fluids or tools based on advice for a different model.

Rule out the audio source and device settings
Play a different track, then try another app or locally stored audio if available. Confirm the playback device’s volume and check its left-right balance and accessibility settings. If the symptom follows one app, track, or device rather than the earbuds, investigate that source or its settings first.
Samsung’s Galaxy Buds troubleshooting guidance includes fit, debris, software, and low battery among possible causes of low or poor audio. Its one-sided-audio guidance also calls out sound-balance settings. Feature availability and menu names can vary by Galaxy Buds model.

Check charging, Bluetooth, and software
For wireless earbuds, confirm that both buds are charged and connected. Test with the phone nearby and, where practical, remove other connected devices or sources from the equation. Connection instability, low charge, nearby interference, or software can affect playback without indicating a failed speaker.

Use the pattern to decide what to try next

These are troubleshooting clues, not a validated scoring system or a way to calculate the probability of hardware failure.
When to contact support
If one earbud remains much quieter, distorted, silent, or intermittent after checking fit, cleaning safely, testing another source, reviewing settings, confirming charge and connection, and following model-specific troubleshooting, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Tell support which devices and sources reproduce the symptom and what steps you have already tried.
Persistence across those checks raises concern for a device problem, but it does not establish that a driver has failed. The manufacturer sources cited here do not provide a cross-brand home test that conclusively distinguishes driver damage from every internal, software, or connection problem.
