A laptop fan that speeds up during a game, update, or other demanding task and quiets down afterward is often responding to increased workload. Dust or blocked vents can restrict airflow; a fan that will not spin, makes grinding or rattling noises, or fails its manufacturer’s diagnostic is more concerning for a hardware fault. No single symptom proves the cause, so compare when the heat occurs with airflow, fan behavior, and the result of a model-appropriate test.
Start with when the laptop gets hot
Think about what was happening when the heat or fan noise began. Games, video sessions, updates, and several demanding applications can increase processor or graphics activity. If the fan ramps up during that work and settles after you save your work and close unneeded demanding tasks, workload is a plausible explanation.
On Windows, open Task Manager to see which processes are using substantial CPU resources. Check for ongoing updates or unusually busy applications; do not disable antivirus or anti-malware software as a cooling fix. A fan that keeps running is not automatically defective: Dell says that on its systems, continuous fan operation with a passed diagnostic and no shutdown can usually be associated with high CPU usage.
Warmth by itself is not proof of a fault. Look at the whole pattern: whether the laptop is under sustained load, whether air can move through its vents, whether fan behavior sounds mechanical, and whether the machine slows down or shuts off.

Check for blocked airflow and accessible dust
Use the laptop on a flat, hard surface rather than bedding or another soft surface that can cover vents. With the computer powered off and unplugged, inspect its intake and exhaust openings for visible lint or debris. Blocked openings and dust around cooling fins can restrict airflow and make the fan work harder, but an external inspection cannot show whether dust is packed deeper inside the cooling assembly.
Dell recommends canned compressed air for accessible vent debris and advises against using a vacuum cleaner, blower, or blowing by mouth. Follow the cleaning and service instructions for your exact model. Do not treat opening the chassis as a universal cleaning step; internal access and procedures vary.

A cooling pad is an optional way to support airflow during prolonged use, not a test for dust or a repair for a broken fan. It cannot establish why the laptop is overheating.

Test the fan using the laptop maker’s procedure
Use diagnostics designed for the exact make and model. Dell’s F12 one-time boot menu and ePSA diagnostics apply to supported Dell computers, not to every laptop.

- Save your work and restart the supported Dell computer.
- At startup, open the F12 one-time boot menu and select Diagnostics to launch ePSA.
- If the diagnostic offers advanced tests, select the fan and run the thorough test.
- Record any error and validation codes shown, then contact Dell support if the test fails.
During ePSA, the fan may run at high speed because the test does not use dynamic fan control. That behavior during the test alone does not show that the fan is defective. For other manufacturers, use their documentation and diagnostic tools; steps and available tests differ by model.
Compare the clues before deciding what to do

This is a triage guide, not a definitive diagnosis. Workload, dust, blocked placement, wear, and software or firmware issues can overlap. Dell notes that excessive heat may cause a processor to reduce its speed (thermal throttling); that symptom alone does not identify the underlying cause.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek help
Shut down, disconnect power, and contact the laptop maker if the chassis or battery area appears swollen or deformed, or if you notice a burning or chemical smell. Do not remove a swollen battery yourself. Also seek support if the laptop remains dangerously hot after shutdown. If a fan test fails or you hear abnormal mechanical noise, avoid treating vent cleaning or a cooling pad as a substitute for hardware service.
