Crackling, static, buzzing, or rattling from an iPhone can come from an obstructed speaker or receiver, an accessory affecting the sound, a call or reception issue, or a hardware problem. The sound alone cannot confirm that a speaker has failed or that something inside the phone body is loose. Try a few reversible comparisons first; if distortion persists, have the iPhone assessed by Apple or a qualified service provider.
1. Compare the sound with accessories removed
Remove the case, screen protector, and any film, then replay the same audio at a moderate volume. If practical, repeat the same call or sound with the accessories back in place. A sound that changes when an accessory is removed is a clue that it may be obstructing or affecting the sound—not proof of a particular internal fault. iFixit notes that some cases can interrupt sound and that a screen protector without a suitable earpiece opening can obstruct the receiver (iFixit’s iPhone 12 speaker troubleshooting guide).
2. Check the speaker and receiver openings
Look for visible dirt or blockage at the speaker opening and, when relevant, the receiver opening used during calls. Apple recommends gently cleaning an opening, if needed, with a small, soft-bristled brush that is clean and dry. Keep the brush at the accessible opening; this is not a method for cleaning or repairing internal components. Do not insert picks, needles, or other objects into a grille, open the phone, or use liquid or compressed air.

Apple’s guidance is: “If necessary, clean the speaker or receiver opening with a small, soft-bristled brush. Make sure that the brush is clean and dry.” Read Apple Support’s guidance on no or distorted sound from an iPhone speaker.

3. Compare system audio with a speakerphone call
- Open Settings > Sounds or Sounds & Haptics, depending on your iOS version.
- Move the Ringtone and Alerts slider and listen for crackling or distortion.
- If sound is audible, place a call and compare what you hear with speakerphone enabled.
If system sounds are clear but calls crackle, the symptom may be related to the call’s network or reception rather than a damaged speaker. Apple recommends trying again later or from another location when the issue occurs during calls. This comparison can narrow down when the problem happens; it cannot identify a loose internal part.

If distortion continues after removing accessories, checking the openings, and comparing system audio with a call, contact Apple or a qualified service provider for diagnosis. Apple says service may be needed when sound problems persist. That does not establish whether the cause is the speaker, another component, or a resonance inside the phone body; the checks above are clues, not a conclusive at-home test.
