Look at the checkmark’s color, then check whether the profile also shows an organization-affiliation badge. On X, blue means an account has an active X Premium subscription and meets X’s eligibility requirements after review; it does not mean the account holder’s identity has been verified. Gold and gray marks identify different kinds of official organization and government accounts.
What each X badge means
| Visible signal | What X says it indicates | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Blue checkmark | An active X Premium subscription and an account that meets X’s eligibility requirements after review. X’s blue checkmark guidance states: “The blue checkmark means that the account has an active subscription to >x< Premium and meets our eligibility requirements.” | It does not, by itself, mean X verified the account holder’s identity, endorse the account, or certify that its posts are trustworthy. |
| Gold checkmark | An official organization account on X through Premium Business, according to X’s Verified Organizations guidance. | It is not the same signal as a personal account’s blue checkmark. |
| Gray checkmark | An eligible government or multilateral organization or official, under X’s gray checkmark guidance. | It is not a general-purpose badge available to ordinary accounts. |
| Affiliation badge | A connection to a Verified Organization. The badge displays that organization’s profile photo, as described in X’s organization affiliation guidance. | It is not a checkmark in its own right. An affiliated account may separately display a blue, gold, or gray checkmark depending on its account type. |
Does a blue checkmark mean the person is identity-verified?
No. X says the blue checkmark reflects an active Premium subscription and an eligibility review, not identity verification. The mark also does not certify the account holder’s expertise, honesty, or importance, or indicate that X supports the account’s views. Treat it as a platform-status label, not as proof that a person is who they claim to be.
Why blue checkmarks have changed meaning
Blue checkmarks were once associated with X’s older verification program, whose stated criteria were that an account be active, notable, and authentic. That legacy program began winding down on April 1, 2023, according to X’s legacy verification guidance. The historical meaning should not be used to interpret a blue mark under X’s current explanation.

X’s eligibility criteria include having a display name and profile photo, recent activity, a confirmed phone number, and no recent profile changes or signs of deceptive conduct, platform manipulation, or spam. X reviews accounts before a blue checkmark appears and may remove it. A new mark may take several business days after review.

Changing a profile photo, display name, or username can trigger another review and temporarily remove the checkmark. A missing or delayed mark therefore does not, by itself, explain why the account is ineligible; X’s review and platform rules apply and can change.
Who can have a gray checkmark?
X reserves gray checkmarks for specified government and multilateral organizations and officials. Its guidance describes an application and review process: applicants need an accurate profile and must confirm identity with documents or a linked government email. Eligibility is tied to current roles and organizations, so an official may lose the mark when leaving office, and an organization may lose it if reorganized.

How organization affiliations work
Premium Organizations is X’s subscription offering for governments and multilateral organizations, with organization and affiliate verification features. An organization can invite an account to affiliate with it; the invited account must accept. An unrelated account cannot simply claim an affiliation badge. The affiliation badge provides organization context, while any checkmark next to it represents a separate account-status signal.

- Identify the checkmark color. Blue indicates Premium subscription plus eligibility review; gold indicates an official organization account through Premium Business; gray indicates an eligible government or multilateral account or official.
- Look for an organization’s profile image beside the account details. An affiliation badge signals a relationship with a Verified Organization; it is distinct from the checkmark.
- Do not infer identity or trust from the mark alone. A blue checkmark is not X confirmation of the account holder’s real-world identity, and no badge alone establishes that a post is accurate.
