A tech deal is worth considering when the exact same model and configuration costs less than comparable offers from trustworthy sellers—and the checkout total and purchase terms still work for you. A crossed-out price or large “percent off” badge is not enough to prove that.
Is this actually a good deal?
There is no universal discount percentage that makes a technology purchase a good deal. Judge the offer against current prices for the same item, its price history when a reliable tracker has relevant data, and the costs and risks attached to buying from that seller.
Start by comparing the manufacturer and exact model number. Then match configuration, condition, and included accessories. A lower price for a laptop with less memory, a phone with less storage, a refurbished device, or a bundle missing accessories is not a like-for-like comparison.

How do I know if a sale price is real?
Compare the exact item at several trustworthy retailers rather than relying on its advertised original price. A claimed markdown can look dramatic while the sale price is similar to what other sellers currently charge. If the item and retailer are covered by a reputable price tracker, check the chart’s history for context; a single chart or discount badge still does not establish that the offer is good.
Price-comparison and tracking services have different coverage. A tracker may follow only selected sellers or periods, and a comparison site may omit retailers or rank listings in ways affected by payment. A U.S. Government Accountability Office report, Consumer Technology, describes comparison tools and trackers that record a seller’s price over time and may alert users when it crosses a threshold; it also notes concerns about steering and targeted marketing. Treat these services as a starting point, then verify listings directly with the seller.

How can I check a product’s price history?
Use a tracker only if it supports the precise retailer and product you are evaluating. Before relying on its chart, check which listing it follows, what period it covers, and whether the chart reflects the same configuration and condition. Price history can help show whether today’s price is unusual for that offer, but it cannot tell you whether the seller is trustworthy or whether another retailer has a better total price.
If no suitable tracker covers the item, compare current offers from several reputable sellers and assess the total cost and terms instead. Do not treat a tracker’s alert threshold or chart duration as a general standard for judging technology discounts.

Is this the same model, or a different configuration?
Read the listing details before comparing prices. Record the following for each offer:
- Identity: manufacturer and full model number.
- Configuration: relevant specifications such as storage, memory, size, or color.
- Condition: new, used, refurbished, or clearance stock.
- Included items: accessories or other bundle contents you would otherwise need to buy.
Compare like with like. A bundle is only an advantage if you would use its contents; otherwise, compare the standalone product price against the standalone product elsewhere. Also check whether the listing is sold and shipped by the retailer or by a third-party marketplace seller.

What is the total price after shipping and fees?
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not just the item price. The FTC advises shoppers to include shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other fees in the total. Add any mandatory charge or required bundle, and count a coupon or bundle discount only if you qualify for it and would use the included items.
Check the terms that can affect the value of the offer:
Best Value
- show lowest price automatically
- save and load list for later on use
- Estimated shipping date and delivery charges.
- Warranty coverage and who provides it.
- Return window, refund method, and return-shipping cost.
- Any restocking fee or restrictions on sale and clearance returns.
- Whether the seller offers a price match or post-purchase price adjustment, and the conditions that apply.
Read the seller’s terms before paying. The FTC’s online shopping guidance explains that sale terms, shipping, returns, and refund policies matter when comparing offers. It also says that when a seller has not promised a shipping time, the seller generally must ship within 30 days or give you the option to agree to a delay or cancel for a full refund. That delivery rule is not a benchmark for whether a price is good.

A low price is not a bargain if the listing is misleading, the item is counterfeit, or the seller does not deliver. Check the seller’s identity and fulfillment responsibility, inspect the listing details, and look for recent reviews from more than one source. If the seller is unfamiliar, research it independently rather than relying only on the advertisement or the marketplace page.
Be especially cautious if an expensive branded product is priced far below comparable offers. The FTC warns that a very low listing price for an expensive item might mean the product is fake. Its May 2024 alert about low-priced brand-name products advertised on social media recommends checking the seller and comparing prices. The FTC also advises shoppers to avoid sellers demanding unusual or irreversible payment methods.

A practical way to evaluate an offer
- Write down the product details. Note the manufacturer, model number, configuration, condition, and included accessories.
- Compare current offers. Check the exact item at several reputable sellers, not a base model against a higher configuration or a new product against refurbished stock.
- Check price history where available. Confirm the tracker covers the same item and seller, and understand the period represented by its chart.
- Calculate the checkout total. Include delivery, taxes, mandatory fees, and any required bundle; count discounts only if you can use them.
- Review the purchase terms. Check shipping estimates, warranty, returns, refund method, return shipping, restocking fees, and any price-adjustment policy.
- Verify an unusually cheap offer independently. Research the seller outside the ad, confirm who fulfills the order, and use a safe payment method.
- Decide whether it suits your needs and budget. A low price on something you do not need is not savings.
