Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and timestamps, then compare them with what your encoder recorded or showed locally. If the fault is already visible in the encoder preview or recording, investigate the encoder, its workload, or its audio and video inputs. If local output is healthy but the stream sent to YouTube is not, test the outbound upload connection. These checks narrow down likely causes; they do not prove every interruption has only one of those causes.

1. Read the stream-health message at the time of the interruption

Open Live Control Room and check stream health, status messages, and their timestamps. YouTube displays messages beside the Health Indicator. Red indicates critical errors and yellow indicates moderate ones, but the message itself is more useful than its color alone. Match its timestamp to when the stream stopped or degraded. YouTube’s live streaming error-message guidance explains the indicator and messages; Live stream metrics covers the metrics available in Live Control Room.

Use the message as a clue, not a verdict: compare it with the encoder’s local output and the connection checks below.

2. Check whether the problem is already present in the encoder

Look at and listen to the encoder’s local preview while the issue occurs. If available, inspect the local recording or archive as well. A frozen or choppy picture, missing source, distorted audio, or other fault that is also present locally points toward the encoder, its workload, or the material routed into it—not just the connection between the encoder and YouTube.

  • Review encoder errors shown on its live dashboard.
  • Check whether CPU load is high when the fault occurs.
  • Confirm that the intended audio and video sources are selected and functioning.
  • Review the local archive for the same audio or video problem.

If these checks do not explain a fault visible in the local output, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder as a next step. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and live-streaming tips for computers.

3. Test the outbound connection if local output is healthy

If the encoder preview and recording look and sound normal while YouTube reports a degraded or stopped stream, test the outbound connection used to send the stream. YouTube recommends testing the strength of that connection and contacting your internet service provider if the test identifies a connection problem.

  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS

A general internet-speed result is useful only to the extent that it tests the upload path and settings relevant to your stream. A healthy download result alone does not establish that the encoder can reliably send its stream. YouTube recommends choosing a quality the connection can deliver reliably, testing upload bitrate, and monitoring stream health. Its guidance does not set one upload-speed threshold that applies to every resolution and bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

4. Use viewer reports to locate where the fault occurs

Ask affected viewers whether the problem happened only to them or to others, and whether those viewers share a network. Compare their reports with what you saw in Live Control Room and at the encoder.

  • One viewer is affected: their device or connection is a more likely place to investigate.
  • Several affected viewers share a network: investigate that shared network.
  • Viewers on different networks report the same error: the encoder or stream itself becomes a stronger possibility; check whether you also saw the fault.

These patterns help narrow the fault’s location; they are not a formal causal test. YouTube’s troubleshooting page discusses audience reports and network conditions.

5. Compare the evidence before choosing a fix

What you observe What it points toward What to check next
The fault appears in the encoder preview or local archive. The encoder, its CPU load, or its audio/video inputs. Encoder errors, workload, sources, and the local recording.
Local output is healthy, but YouTube reports trouble receiving the stream. The outbound connection is a stronger suspect. Test the upload path and stream settings; contact the ISP if the test finds a connection problem.
One viewer reports a problem while others do not. That viewer’s device or connection. Check whether other viewers, or you, see the same issue.
Multiple affected viewers share one network. The shared viewer network. Compare reports from viewers on other networks.
Viewers on different networks report the same error. A stream or encoder issue becomes more plausible. Compare reports with stream health and the encoder’s local output.

The signals can overlap. A stream can have a source or encoder problem as well as a network problem, so use the timestamped messages, local output, upload test, and viewer reports together.
