The clearest sign of a hardware-level restriction is error VAN 152. Riot says this means the device is restricted because of a hardware ID (HWID) ban. A VALORANT Game Ban is a separate penalty category, but if the notice shows another code—or does not clearly identify the penalty—Riot Support is the reliable route to confirm its scope. Do not sign in with another account on a device you suspect is HWID-banned.
What VAN 152 tells you
Riot Games Support says VAN 152 means “the device you’re using has been restricted from playing because of a hardware ID (HWID) ban.” The notice is therefore a device-level signal, not just a message that the account currently signed in cannot play. Riot’s VAN 152 support page, dated July 16, 2026, says the restriction is not a Vanguard installation or connection issue. Reinstalling VALORANT or Vanguard, changing the connection, or restarting the PC will not remove it.
Riot describes an HWID ban as applying to the computer’s physical components rather than only to an account. It also warns that accounts used on a restricted device may themselves receive a temporary ban. See Riot’s explanation of HWID bans, dated May 31, 2026.

How an account or game penalty differs
Riot’s VALORANT penalties FAQ describes a Game Ban as preventing play until the date and time displayed in the notice. The FAQ lists Game Ban durations from 7 days to permanent; that range applies to this penalty category, not to the duration of every device restriction. A Game Ban and an HWID ban have different stated scopes, and the FAQ does not say that every other error is account-only.

For a Game Ban, read the notice and its end time. Riot says penalties are based on the offense and behavior history. The VALORANT Penalties and Bans FAQ is the source for the category and duration information.
Compare the signal you have

What to do if you suspect a hardware ban
- Record the exact notice. Note the error code and wording shown in VALORANT or by Riot. Do not rely on a general description such as “Vanguard error.”
- If it says VAN 152, treat it as a device restriction. Riot says ordinary reinstall, restart, and connection troubleshooting will not remove this restriction.
- Do not sign in with another account on that PC. Riot advises against logging in with any account on a computer suspected of having an HWID ban. It warns that another account can be restricted on the device and receive a temporary ban if the system assumes it may be circumventing the original penalty.
- Contact Riot Player Support from the affected account. Ask for clarification if the notice is ambiguous. If you believe an HWID ban was applied in error, request a review. Riot says it investigates and decides whether to lift or extend the restriction; a review does not guarantee it will be lifted.
Avoid third-party “unban” utilities or hardware-change advice. Riot’s cited guidance points players to Support for review; it does not endorse those remedies.

Do not diagnose a ban from a generic Vanguard error
Vanguard is Riot’s anti-cheat system, which Riot says consists of a client that runs while its games are active and a kernel-mode driver. Vanguard or connection problems can affect play, but that fact alone does not establish an account ban or an HWID ban. VAN 152 is the explicit device-level indicator established in Riot’s current support guidance. For other messages, use the exact code’s official explanation or ask Support rather than inferring the enforcement scope. See Riot’s overview of Vanguard.
How long does VAN 152 last?
Do not assume a fixed duration from an older error-code list. A separate Riot error-code page says error 152 is typically associated with four months, but the page also warns that its list is out of date and that displayed errors can be incorrect. Treat the current in-client notice and Riot Support’s case-specific guidance as more relevant to your restriction than that older general estimate.
