To tell whether a Prime Day deal is actually a good price, compare the exact product and configuration with its own recent price history, then check the full checkout cost and terms. A big percentage-off badge—or a new low—does not by itself prove the item is worth buying or that no retailer has a better offer.
1. Make sure you are comparing the exact same item
Before judging the price, confirm the listing’s model number and configuration: size, color, quantity, bundle, and condition. Also note who is selling it and what shipping terms apply. A chart or another retailer’s listing may refer to a different variant, seller, or condition, so a price comparison is meaningful only when those details match. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends checking manufacturer or model numbers and item details when comparison shopping.
2. Check the item’s price history
On eligible Amazon product pages, look for the “Price history” link and compare the offer with the product’s recent range and earlier lows. Amazon says its history view can show 30-, 90-, and 365-day windows; availability and access vary by country. Use the longest relevant view available, since a short window may not show whether the price has been lower before.

Amazon Staff describes the feature this way: “During Prime Day, price history can help customers quickly understand whether a deal is lower than a product’s recent price.” Amazon also reports that more than 50 million customers had used price history since its 2024 launch and that customers checked it three times per month on average. Those are Amazon-reported usage figures, not independent evidence that particular deals are good.

3. Understand what the crossed-out price means
A reference price can provide context, but it is not the same thing as a comparison with the item’s full price history or with other retailers. Amazon describes List Price as a validated price submitted by sellers, manufacturers, or suppliers. Its Typical Price (also shown as “Was” in some contexts) is the median price paid on Amazon over the previous 90 days, excluding limited-time deal prices. Amazon says it aims for deal prices to be the lowest in at least the previous 30 days.
These are Amazon’s definitions and stated aim; they do not guarantee that a particular offer is the best current value. Treat the discount percentage as a prompt to investigate, not as the verdict. A deal can look dramatic against a reference price while being close to the product’s ordinary recent price.

4. Use another price-history view if it helps
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Prime Day advice names Keepa and CamelCamelCamel as tools for viewing Amazon price history. They can provide another comparison view, but check that the chart corresponds to the listing you are considering. Product variation, seller, condition, and shipping can make two apparently similar prices non-equivalent; do not assume a chart captures every listing detail.
5. Compare the full cost and the terms
Compare what you will actually pay at checkout, not just the displayed item price. Include shipping, handling, delivery charges, taxes, and other fees. Then check whether the offer requires a bundle or other condition, whether the item is new or used, who the seller is, and what return rules apply to the sale item. The FTC advises accounting for shipping and fees when comparison shopping.

6. Decide against your own target price
There is no universal discount percentage that makes every product a good deal. Decide what price is acceptable for something you already need or want, then use its price history to judge whether today’s offer meets that target. If the price is ordinary or only slightly below recent prices, waiting or checking another retailer may be sensible. If it meets your target and the seller, condition, total cost, and terms work for you, the history gives useful context—but it cannot determine whether you personally need the item.
Amazon says customers can set target-price alerts through Alexa for Shopping. Feature names and availability can change, so check Amazon’s current guidance if you want to use an alert rather than buy immediately.

A quick comparison checklist
- Same model and configuration: size, color, quantity, and bundle.
- Recent history: current offer compared with the longest useful window and prior lows available.
- Same purchase context: seller, condition, and shipping terms.
- Complete checkout cost: item price plus shipping, taxes, and fees.
- Restrictions: required bundle or conditions, and the return policy.
- Your decision: whether the price meets a target you set for an item you actually want.
