Start with the earliest available source and any provenance record attached to the file; then compare the media with independent context. A detector can offer a clue, but it cannot prove a file is authentic or AI-altered on its own. Missing provenance is inconclusive, and ordinary edits or compression can change a file without deception.
What are you trying to establish?
“Altered by AI” can mean different things: a clip might have been generated from scratch, modified with AI, edited using conventional tools, or presented without context. Those are separate questions. First establish what changed, if anything; then assess whether the way the file is presented misleads.
NIST’s Examining Digital Media emphasizes the media’s source, how it was supplied, and its lifecycle. A crop, enhancement, noise reduction, color correction, copy, recompression, or storage change may affect a photo, video, or recording without indicating deceptive intent.

Find the earliest available source
Search for the original post, publisher, photographer, recording, or event—not just the repost you received. Ask who supplied the file and how they obtained it. A repost usually tells you little about the file’s earlier history. NIST’s Examining Digital Media recommends considering both source and supply.

Inspect any available Content Credentials
Look for a Content Credentials indicator or use a compatible verifier to inspect associated provenance. Review what the record says about the creator, how the content was made, and subsequent edits. The C2PA Content Credentials: C2PA Technical Specification, version 2.3, describes signed, tamper-evident provenance records that can preserve earlier history as changes are added. The Content Credentials overview also describes embedding, invisible watermarking, and digital fingerprinting as approaches intended to help credentials stay associated with content across workflows.
-
Treat absent credentials as unknown
C2PA adoption is opt-in. A file may never have had credentials, or the copy available to you may no longer have its associated provenance. No credential does not establish that the file is fake—or that it is unaltered.
-
Ask for the original and its handling history
When possible, compare a higher-quality original with the copy under question. Ask whether it was edited, enhanced, copied, recompressed, or stored in a way that could have changed its appearance or sound. A compressed repost is not equivalent evidence to the original recording.

Use detectors only as supporting evidence
Automated tools infer from features in the media; their reliability depends on the formats and kinds of manipulation they were tested against. NIST’s Identity Proofing Requirements calls for testing with genuine and forged or manipulated media, documenting false-positive and false-negative rates, and augmenting automated decisions with manual review. Those requirements apply to identity-proofing providers; they do not guarantee that consumer detector sites meet the same standard. NIST’s Reducing Risks Posed by Synthetic Content also cautions that the effectiveness of many detection and provenance approaches is not fully examined.

Get human review when the stakes are high
If a decision could affect someone’s safety, reputation, employment, or legal position, do not rely on a detector score alone. Seek a reviewer who can examine the original file, its provenance, source history, and relevant context.
What each verification method can tell you
| Approach | What it examines | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Source and context checks | Who first published or supplied the media, and whether the event or claim is independently corroborated. | Whether every part of the file is unedited. |
| Content Credentials or other provenance | Available records about origin and editing history. | Complete history for every file; credentials are opt-in and may not be present in the copy. |
| Automated detector | Patterns in the particular media that may be associated with manipulation. | Reliable identification across every modality, format, or manipulation type; a result needs tool-specific testing and error-rate context. |
| Original-file comparison and human review | Differences between versions and whether the chain of custody and context support the claim. | Certainty if the original, reliable context, or sufficient technical information is unavailable. |
How to interpret provenance capabilities
Content Credentials are provenance records, not a universal AI detector. C2PA describes a model in which a record can retain prior provenance as edits are added; that is useful evidence when the relevant records are available and can be verified. It is not a guarantee that every edit to every file will be recorded.
A July 31, 2026 C2PA implementation guide describes a standardized vocabulary for creation and editing events, as well as possible localization of AI modifications through regions of interest. These are capabilities described in implementation guidance, not features readers should assume are present in every file or verifier.
Quick Recap
Make the judgment carefully
- Separate evidence about a file’s history from evidence about whether a claim or presentation is misleading.
- For each detector result, ask which media modality and manipulation types were tested, and whether false-positive and false-negative rates are documented.
- Prefer corroboration: source history, available provenance, a higher-quality original, and independent context are more informative together than any one signal alone.
