Check who published the story and look for a verifiable statement that the NHL or a member club authorized or officially attributed it. Hockey terms, NHL team names, logos, real-player references, and polished marketing do not prove a story is official or licensed. If you cannot verify its status, describe it as unverified rather than guessing.
What makes a hockey romance official NHL content?
For a story to be identified as official NHL content, there should be affirmative evidence tying it to the league or a member club: for example, publication through an official channel, an identified licensee, or an official announcement. An independent publisher’s description or the story’s commercial appearance is not equivalent to that evidence.
The NHL says its marks belong to the league or respective teams and that prior written consent is required for reproduction. That makes a logo or team mark something to check—not proof that permission was granted. The NHL’s Copyright Policy concerns reporting material on NHL.com; it does not establish that every hockey-related story elsewhere is league content.

- Identify the source. Note the publisher, author, publication date, product page or archive listing, and the URL where the story is offered. An NHL or official team channel is stronger provenance evidence than an unaffiliated repost.
- Look for affirmative rights evidence. Check for a named licensee, publisher acknowledgment, or announcement from the NHL or a team that identifies the work. A logo, team name, or claim such as “official” in promotional copy is not itself a license statement.
- Compare the claim with an official source. See whether the NHL or a member club publicly identifies the publisher or work. If a consequential licensing claim remains unclear, the NHL’s Terms of Service, last updated October 29, 2025, direct requests to its DMCA/Trademark and Copyright Requests channel.
- Classify only what the evidence supports. Use “officially identified” when an NHL or team source confirms the connection; use “fanwork context” when the work is presented as fan-created on a fanwork archive; use “unverified” when authorization cannot be confirmed. These descriptions are provenance assessments, not legal rulings.
Original hockey romance, NHL RPF, and fanfiction are not the same thing
A romance set in hockey can use invented teams and players. The sport or setting alone does not make it NHL content. A story that names real NHL teams or players may be real-person or franchise fanfiction, but those references still do not establish that the NHL or a team authorized or endorsed it.

Keep two questions separate: what kind of story is it, and who authorized or published it? Genre and subject matter help describe the work; publisher identity and verifiable rights attribution help establish official provenance.
What an AO3 listing tells you—and what it does not
AO3 describes itself in its Content Policy as a place to host “transformative, non-commercial works created by fans from all over the world.” That policy is useful context for understanding the archive’s purpose. AO3 also says it does not prescreen submissions, as described in its Terms of Service.

Being hosted on AO3 does not by itself prove that a particular work is authorized, legally transformative, or endorsed by a rights holder. AO3’s Terms of Service FAQ discusses transformative considerations, but platform policies do not decide the legal status of an individual story. Its rules and descriptions are not a case-specific ruling by a court or the NHL.

If a publisher or listing makes an important but unclear claim of NHL or team authorization, check with the rights holder rather than inferring permission from branding or player names. The NHL’s Terms of Service provide a DMCA/Trademark and Copyright Requests route for requests concerning copyrighted works or marks. The NHL’s Copyright Policy also identifies a copyright agent for complaints about content on NHL.com. These channels support inquiry or reporting; they do not turn a reader’s inference into a legal determination.

A quick evidence checklist
- Publisher or channel: Is the work published or acknowledged by the NHL or a member club, or is it on an independent site, fan archive, or repost?
- Rights statement: Is there a specific licensee, permission statement, or official announcement—not just NHL-related marks or marketing language?
- Work context: Is the story presented as officially commissioned or attributed, or as fan-created work?
- Confirmation: Can the claimed connection be verified through a rights-holder source, rather than inferred from appearance or subject matter?
If the evidence does not answer those questions, “unverified” is more accurate than either “official” or a definitive legal label.
