Start with the mod page’s disclosure and tags, then check exactly what they refer to: the downloadable mod, its promotional page material, or both. On Nexus Mods, authors must use separate tags for AI-generated content, AI media and limited AI assistance. A missing tag does not prove a mod is AI-free, and an odd-looking image or line of dialogue is not proof of AI use.
First, identify where the mod is hosted
Disclosure rules depend on the host. Nexus Mods’ current File Submission Guidelines apply to listings on Nexus Mods; they should not be assumed to govern every Fallout or Call of Duty mod site, publisher channel or in-game marketplace. Check the rules of the platform hosting the exact item.
For Fallout 4, Nexus Mods distinguishes official Creation Club content from other creator content: its guidance treats Creation Club as official content and other Verified Creator content as unofficial under that policy. Make sure you have identified the listing and its source before assessing its disclosure.

Nexus Mods’ File Submission Guidelines, last updated September 29, 2026, require specific tags for generative-AI use in a mod or its page. These categories describe different kinds of involvement:

The distinction matters: an AI-generated thumbnail falls under AI Media, but on its own it does not establish that the downloadable mod contains generated assets. Likewise, an AI-assisted label is not simply a softer synonym for AI-generated; Nexus Mods describes it as limited involvement in work led by the developer.
A practical way to check a mod
- Open the exact listing and confirm the host. Note whether it is a Nexus Mods page, another community site, or an official publisher or in-game channel. Use that host’s rules, not another site’s policy.
- Read the tags and disclosure statement. On Nexus Mods, look for AI-Generated Content, AI Media and AI Assisted. Check whether the author identifies the game content, page assets, or both.
- Inspect the page and the mod separately. A thumbnail, trailer or description is page media. Don’t infer from that alone that voices, textures, code or other downloadable files were generated.
- Pin down the component involved. If the author discloses AI use, look for the specific affected part—such as a voice, translation, music track, UI element or in-game asset. A precise description is more useful than saying only that “the mod uses AI.”
- For an AI-assisted claim, look for process evidence. Nexus Mods lists project or version-control history, human-led design and demonstrated knowledge of the code or content as relevant evidence. Such records may not be posted on every mod page; the guidelines describe expectations, not a guarantee that each author publishes a development history.
- Treat visual or textual clues as leads, not findings. An unusual texture, voice or description may prompt a question, but the official guidance does not validate detector scores or appearance-based methods for establishing AI authorship. Don’t present an intuition or detector result as proof.
- Use the host’s reporting process for a possible mislabel. Nexus Mods says incorrect tagging, including undisclosed generative-AI use, may lead to moderation. Report a concern through the platform’s current process and avoid making a public accusation unless you have supporting evidence.
What a disclosure can—and cannot—prove
Nexus Mods puts responsibility on authors to make accurate claims on their pages, including claims about content generated or assisted by third-party tools. That makes a disclosure useful evidence of what the author says was used, but it is not independent forensic verification. The platform’s rules also do not establish that every author complies, so the absence of an AI tag cannot certify that no AI was involved.

The official sources provide no prevalence statistic for AI-made Fallout or Call of Duty mods and no validated accuracy figure for AI detectors. Without a mod-specific disclosure or credible corroborating evidence, the most accurate conclusion is that AI use is unconfirmed—not that it is present or absent.

Nexus Mods displays file security-check and virus-scan status beside files in the Files tab, using green, blue, white, yellow and red indicators for different scanning and review states. Those badges concern security checks and scan coverage; they do not identify whether AI generated a file. A security scan result is not an AI-authorship assessment, and AI disclosure is not a malware assessment.

If you are comparing two mods
Compare evidence rather than treating AI disclosure as a shortcut for quality or safety. For each listing, record:
- Which AI category the host or author identifies, and the exact component involved.
- Whether the AI use is in the downloadable mod, the page media, or both.
- How specific the author’s explanation is; for an AI-assisted claim, note any evidence of development history or expertise.
- Which platform hosts the mod and which current policy applies.
- File-scan status separately, if download security is also part of your comparison.
Nexus Mods’ 2023 announcement is historical context, not a substitute for its current rules: it said AI-generated mod content was not categorically against the rules at that time and discussed complaints from affected creators or rights holders. The current File Submission Guidelines are the relevant source for today’s tagging requirements.
