Look for account changes, logins, posts, messages, or access permissions the company did not authorize. Any one clue can have an innocent explanation, so verify it in the platform’s own security and business settings. If the signs point to unauthorized access, secure the account promptly—or use the platform’s official recovery process if the team is locked out.
Signs a company social media account may be compromised
These clues warrant investigation, but none proves by itself that an account was hacked or explains how someone gained access. First establish whether an authorized employee or administrator initiated the activity.
- Account details changed unexpectedly: The password, username, recovery email, or phone number was changed or reset without the authorized team’s action. Changes to recovery details can make it harder for the business to regain control.
- Unfamiliar login alerts or sessions: The platform reports an attempt or successful login from a device or location the team does not recognize. Check the platform’s session history where available; alerts and location estimates are clues to verify, not a forensic conclusion. Meta provides login alerts and a “Where You’re Logged In” area, while X says it may alert users to suspicious or first-time device logins.
- Unrecognized content or customer reports: Posts, profile edits, or direct messages appear that the company did not create. Customers may also report receiving messages the business did not send.
- Unknown apps, administrators, or permission changes: A connected application or person has access the business did not approve, or existing roles have changed. CISA advises organizations to monitor for unauthorized logons and permission changes.
- The team has lost access: Authorized staff cannot sign in, especially when that occurs alongside unexpected changes to credentials or recovery details.
For guidance on interpreting these signs and recovering access, see the FTC’s October 2024 advice, its account recovery guidance, and Meta’s account security advice.
How to verify suspicious activity
- Open the service directly. Use a trusted device and go to the platform or its app yourself. Don’t follow an unexpected message’s link to “support” or account security; check the reported event from within the service.
- Review login and session records. Look for devices or sessions the authorized team cannot identify. Ask staff and administrators whether a legitimate login could explain the alert before treating it as unauthorized.
- Check recovery details and account changes. Confirm that the email address and phone number used for recovery still belong to the business or its authorized account holder. Review recent credential and profile changes.
- Inspect access beyond the public profile. Review connected apps, administrators, business roles, and permissions where the platform provides those controls. A company’s social presence may also be reachable through employee accounts or business management tools, so check those access paths as well.
- Compare the activity with business records. Ask the relevant staff and internal administrator whether the post, message, login, or permission change was approved. Treat customer reports and visible clues as reasons to investigate, not proof of the intrusion method.
Controls and screen names differ by service and can change. Use that platform’s official help pages for its current security and recovery options. X describes login alerts in its account security guidance.

What to do if the account is still accessible
- Change the password to a strong, unique one that is not used for another account.
- End other sessions using the platform’s sign-out or session-management controls.
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) if available, and confirm the account’s recovery email and phone are correct.
- Remove access the business does not recognize. Review and remove unfamiliar connected apps, administrators, or business permissions. Coordinate with the responsible internal administrator so needed staff do not lose legitimate access.
- Review incident activity. Identify unauthorized posts and messages, and notify affected contacts through a verified channel the company still controls. Keep the notice factual.
- Monitor account and business settings. Watch for further unfamiliar logins, content, administrator additions, or permission changes. CISA’s social media account protection guidance recommends organizational policies and monitoring for unusual activity and access changes.
What to do if the company is locked out
Use the platform’s official hacked-account recovery flow, starting from its website or app rather than a link in an unsolicited message. The FTC lists recovery entry points for major services in its recovery guide. Avoid unofficial third parties promising to recover the account; use the provider’s own process and involve the company’s designated administrator or security team.

An unfamiliar login does not, by itself, establish that a device has malware. If staff suspect malicious software was downloaded, update the affected device’s security software and run a scan. Meta also recommends security measures such as 2FA, unique passwords, login alerts, session reviews, and Security Checkup for people with access to business tools in its business malware guidance.
