To check a ChatGPT download before installing, start from OpenAI’s verified communications page or the official store for your device—not an ad, message, or third-party download site. For mobile apps, confirm the publisher is OpenAI. For Windows, OpenAI points users to Microsoft Store; for Mac, its download guidance points to chatgpt.com/download. If you cannot verify the source and publisher, do not install the file.
Use the official channel for your device
The safest check is where the download comes from and who publishes the app. OpenAI’s verified communications guidance identifies official websites and authentic app channels. Follow a link from OpenAI rather than trusting a search result or guessing at a domain.
| Device | Where to get the app | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Google Play. OpenAI suggests searching “openai chatgpt” or following its direct store link. | The publisher must be OpenAI. See OpenAI’s Android instructions. |
| iPhone or iPad | Apple App Store. OpenAI suggests searching “openai chatgpt” or following its direct store link. | The publisher must be OpenAI. See OpenAI’s iOS instructions. |
| Windows | Microsoft Store, the distribution channel named in OpenAI’s Windows app guidance. | Use the Store listing reached through OpenAI’s guidance. Managed-device users should follow their IT administrator’s deployment instructions. |
| Mac | chatgpt.com/download, as named in OpenAI’s Mac download guidance. | Use the official page, which selects an installer for the Mac’s processor type. |
Check the website before downloading
- Navigate independently. Type an official address yourself or begin at OpenAI’s verified communications page. Do not open a download link from an unsolicited email, message, social post, ad, or file-sharing link.
- Read the full hostname. A page title, logo, or URL containing the words “OpenAI” or “ChatGPT” does not establish that the site belongs to OpenAI. OpenAI’s guidance identifies
openai.com,help.openai.com, andchatgpt.comin relevant contexts; follow links from those official sources rather than guessing at a lookalike domain. - Use the right store on mobile. Open Google Play or the App Store yourself. Check that the app’s publisher is OpenAI; if the publisher differs or the result is a sponsored lookalike, stop and use OpenAI’s direct store link.
- Reject third-party installers. OpenAI advises against apps from email, messages, ads, file-sharing links, and third-party download sites. A mirror or software catalog is not an equivalent source.
- Do not enter credentials on an unverified page. Close it and navigate to an official source instead of entering a ChatGPT password into a download page or installer prompt you reached through an unverified link.
A polished page, HTTPS padlock, high search placement, positive reviews, or a familiar icon is not proof that an installer is genuine. Nor does an antivirus scan authenticate who published a file.
Platform-specific details to check
Mac
OpenAI’s current Mac guidance sends users to chatgpt.com/download. It says the page detects whether a Mac uses Apple Silicon or Intel and serves an appropriate installer. The stated requirements are macOS 14 and either Apple Silicon M1 or later, or an Intel processor. Check the current page for changes to requirements and app naming before installing.
#1 Best Overall
OpenAI’s transition guidance says the newer desktop app became available for macOS and Windows as of July 9, and calls the earlier Mac app ChatGPT Classic, which continues to be supported. If an older article or download page uses a different name, use OpenAI’s current download and help pages to determine what is available now. See OpenAI’s desktop app transition guidance.
Windows
OpenAI identifies Microsoft Store as the Windows app channel. Its help page also documents an enterprise installation using winget with the msstore source; that is not a reason to run a command copied from an unverified site. For a managed computer, follow your organization’s IT instructions. The help page lists Windows 10 x64 or arm64, version 17763.0 or higher, as system requirements; check the current Store listing and OpenAI guidance because requirements can change.
Android and iPhone or iPad
Open the platform’s official store and verify OpenAI is the publisher. OpenAI’s help pages recommend searching “openai chatgpt” and provide direct store links, which reduce the risk of selecting an imitation result.

- Do not run it to see what happens.
- Discard the file and return to the official site or store to start again.
- If you installed the app or entered your password, use official OpenAI account guidance to secure the account. Do not rely on a scan as proof that the download was authentic.
Why current official guidance matters
OpenAI’s May 13, 2026 response to a TanStack npm supply-chain incident said it found no evidence of malicious software signed with an OpenAI certificate or unauthorized changes to published software, and said it was updating signing certificates. The notice instructed users to update through in-app updates or official webpages and to avoid installers from email, messages, ads, file-sharing links, and third-party download sites. OpenAI later amended the macOS update deadline to June 26, 2026, a date that has passed. For a current version, use the app’s update mechanism or the official page rather than relying on an old deadline or an outdated installer. Read OpenAI’s incident notice.
The notice also discussed macOS app-signing certificate changes and warned that a fraudulent app using the impacted certificate would lack notarization and be blocked by default unless a user explicitly bypassed protections. That warning is incident-specific; it does not mean every security prompt proves an app is malicious. Do not bypass a platform warning to force an installation from an uncertain source.
