A cat may fit your lifestyle if your home can be made safe, everyone is ready to share daily care, you can plan for routine and unexpected veterinary costs, and any allergy concerns have been addressed. Start by assessing your household and schedule, then talk with a shelter or rescue about the needs and temperament of a specific cat.
How do I know if I’m ready for a cat?
Readiness is less about whether cats are called “independent” and more about whether you can reliably meet one cat’s needs over time. Responsible care includes suitable food and fresh water, a clean litter area, veterinary care, grooming, exercise, social interaction, and prompt attention to illness or injury. The ASPCA’s general cat-care guidance outlines these responsibilities.
- Everyone in the household agrees to the commitment and understands that a cat may scratch, shed, need time to adjust, or have individual behavior needs.
- You can provide daily care and arrange dependable help when you travel, become ill, move, or have a schedule change.
- You have a plan for routine veterinary visits and for paying for unexpected illness or injury.
- You have considered whether anyone at home may have a cat allergy.
Before committing, confirm that your lease, building rules, and local requirements allow a cat. Check the current rules that apply to your location.
Can I have a cat if I work full time?
Working full time does not, by itself, answer whether a cat is a good fit. The practical question is whether you can provide reliable daily care and interaction around your working hours, and arrange care when you are away for longer periods. Cats still need food and clean water, litter maintenance, play and social contact, and attention to changes in health or behavior.

Consider your actual routine: who will handle care before and after work, what happens when you travel, and whether the time you can give matches the needs of the individual cat. Ask a shelter or rescue about that cat’s activity level, social needs, and known behavior rather than assuming every cat will be comfortable with the same schedule.
Can a cat live in a small apartment?
Square footage alone does not establish whether a home is suitable. The cited guidance gives no universal minimum size. A more useful assessment is whether you can provide safe resting places, an accessible litter-box location, and room for the cat to move and use vertical space. The ASPCA advises keeping cats indoors and considering vertical space when choosing a home in its cat-care guidance.

How much does it cost to own a cat?
Plan for initial setup, recurring supplies and care, and unexpected veterinary expenses. Include adoption or acquisition costs, food, litter, a carrier and other initial supplies, routine and preventive veterinary care, and a way to pay for illness or injury. Local prices and a cat’s health and age can change the total substantially.

| Initial cat costs | $455 | ASPCA estimate on a page marked “2021 UPDATE”; historical planning context, not a current quote. |
| Annual cat costs | $1,149 | ASPCA estimate on a page marked “2021 UPDATE”; the page lists categories such as food, routine medical costs, preventive medication, litter, toys, treats, and insurance. |
| First-year cat costs | $1,904 | ASPCA estimate on a page marked “2021 UPDATE”; not a current or location-specific budget promise. |
These figures come from the ASPCA’s cat cost estimates. Compare current local veterinary fees, including preventive-care costs, and price the supplies you expect to use. Pet insurance may help with veterinary expenses, but plans can have waiting periods and exclude pre-existing conditions. Review current policy terms and compare coverage with savings or other ways to pay for care.
What if someone in my home is allergic to cats?
Do not rely on a cat’s coat length or type to avoid an allergic reaction. The ASPCA explains that common pet allergens are proteins found in dander, saliva, urine, and sebaceous cells, and states: “Fur length and type will not affect or prevent allergies.” Reactions can vary from animal to animal. Read the ASPCA’s cat allergy guidance.

If someone in the household has symptoms or a known allergy, consult a physician, preferably an allergy specialist, before adopting. ASPCA suggests exposure-reduction steps such as keeping the cat out of a bedroom, cleaning regularly, and using a HEPA-filter vacuum or air purifier; these steps do not guarantee that symptoms will be controlled.

Talk with a shelter or rescue about your home, schedule, household members, and experience with pets. Ask what is known about each cat’s age, health, activity, behavior, and response to children or other animals. Meet the cat where possible, and ask whether fostering is available locally. The ASPCA’s adoption guidance recommends preparing your home and arranging veterinary care; it also notes, “You want your pet to live a long, healthy, happy life, so it’s important to plan for regular veterinary care.”

If you are comparing several cats, consider the factors together rather than relying on a breed, coat, or “low-maintenance” label:
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Care needs | Are there known health conditions, grooming needs, or likely veterinary follow-ups? |
| Household fit | What has been observed around children, visitors, or resident animals? What remains uncertain? |
| Activity and interaction | What are the cat’s observed play and social needs, and can your household meet them consistently? |
| Practical cost | What are the adoption fee, setup needs, routine-care costs, and known additional care needs? |
Use the conversation to identify what is known and what is uncertain. A specific cat’s needs and behavior are more useful to your decision than a general promise about a breed or appearance.
