A carrier phone deal is worth it only if the phone, required service, upfront charges, trade-in, and credits cost less over the time you expect to stay than a realistic alternative. Compare the full offer—not just its advertised monthly phone payment—with keeping your current plan and buying an unlocked phone. Treat promotional credits as conditional until you verify the exact offer terms for your phone, plan, trade-in, and account.
Start with a like-for-like comparison
Choose the phone configuration and a comparison period that match your needs. Use the same period for the carrier offer and the alternative, and include the service you would actually use in either case. If credits run for 36 months, calculate both the full 36-month outcome and the cost if you leave earlier.
Use this as a decision framework, not a carrier-quoted formula:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCarrier deal cost = device payments + required service + upfront taxes and fees + required line or port-in costs − credits earned during the comparison period.

For the alternative, add your current or other suitable service cost over that same period to the outright price of an unlocked phone. If the carrier requires a more expensive plan than you otherwise need, count the extra service cost as part of the deal.
Check what the advertised credits actually require
“Up to” and “as low as” prices generally depend on specific conditions, which vary by phone and promotion. For example, AT&T’s live offers describe promotions using 36 monthly bill credits and qualifying installment agreements; examples can require particular unlimited plans, trade-in thresholds, or a new line. Its terms say lowering the plan during the installment term may stop or reduce credits, and cancelling wireless service stops credits while making the remaining device balance due. See AT&T’s current offers and terms.

AT&T’s trade-in page currently lists an iPhone 18 Pro offer as low as $0 per month after credits, subject to an eligible plan and trade-in, 36-month credits, a 0% APR installment agreement, and tax on the full price at sale. That advertised net payment is not the same as a phone with no cost or conditions. Check the offer page for the selected model and current eligibility: AT&T trade-in offers.

Count credits when they arrive, not when they are advertised
Promotional credits may be applied over time rather than deducted from the phone price at checkout. An older AT&T offer’s legal terms illustrate the timing: credits could begin within three bills after trade-in completion, then be applied in equal amounts over the installment term. That example explains how credits can be delayed and spread out; it does not establish current offer amounts or eligibility. See AT&T offer legal terms.
For your calculation, subtract only credits you are eligible and reasonably likely to receive during the comparison period. If the promotion requires you to keep a particular plan or line, include the cost of doing so. If you might leave before the credit term ends, count only the credits expected by then and account for any device balance that would become due.

Include upfront tax, fees, and location-based bill charges
A low monthly phone payment does not show what you may owe at checkout. AT&T says tax on the device’s full retail price is due at sale and lists an activation or upgrade fee. T-Mobile says tax on the pre-credit price is due at sale and a device connection charge may apply. Exact amounts and terms depend on the offer, so check the selected promotion rather than assuming credits reduce the taxable price or eliminate carrier charges.
Service bills may also include taxes and surcharges that depend on the service address and account. Verizon’s customer agreement distinguishes taxes and governmental charges from Verizon-imposed surcharges, which are not taxes. Check your location and account details when estimating recurring costs: Verizon customer agreement.

Value the trade-in against a real alternative
A trade-in is part of the deal’s value, not a bonus to count automatically at its headline amount. Compare the offer with what you could realistically get by keeping, selling, or otherwise using the old phone. Check the selected promotion’s eligible models and condition thresholds; those requirements vary by offer. The available carrier terms do not establish a universal trade-in valuation method or market price, so do not assume the advertised promotional value is what every device is worth.
Check what happens if you change plans, pay off, or leave
Before checkout, find out whether changing to a cheaper plan, cancelling a line or account, or paying off the phone early affects future credits. Also check when any unpaid device balance becomes due. For example, AT&T warns that lowering the plan can stop or reduce credits and that cancelling service stops them; T-Mobile warns that account cancellation before all credits arrive stops them and makes the remaining finance balance due. T-Mobile’s early-payoff restriction applies to certain offers, not necessarily every promotion. Confirm the exact language for your selected deal.
Ask the carrier to confirm the full offer terms before completing the purchase, including the eligible phone and trade-in, required plan, credit schedule, line or port-in requirements, and consequences of leaving or changing service.

Run the numbers before you commit
- Set the period. Choose how long you expect to keep the phone and line. If credits last 36 months, calculate the full term and a shorter stay if that is plausible.
- List carrier costs. Add device installment payments, required service payments, upfront taxes and fees, and any required new-line or port-in costs.
- Subtract likely credits. Count credits only for months you expect to qualify for them, based on the offer’s plan, trade-in, account, and timing rules.
- Include the trade-in alternative. Compare the offer’s value with a realistic alternative for your old phone rather than treating the headline credit as cash value.
- Calculate the unlocked option. Add the service you would keep or choose over the same period to the unlocked phone’s current purchase price.
- Compare exit scenarios. Recalculate if you leave or change plans early, including credits that would stop and any device balance that would become due.
Carrier plan prices, taxes, fees, eligibility, trade-in values, and credits vary by offer, location, and account. Recheck them at the time of purchase; there is no universally cheapest carrier deal based on the advertised phone payment alone.
