To find where an AI agent is spending money, trace three separate records: the AI provider’s usage and cost data for model/API charges, your application or agent framework’s logs for runs and tool activity, and the merchant and payment provider’s records for purchases. These sources answer different questions. Join them using task, user, project, or agent IDs, align timestamps and billing periods, and reconcile provider costs against invoices.

First, identify what “spending” means

An agent’s activity can produce several kinds of expense. A model request may incur provider charges; a tool or connected service may have its own usage fees; and an agent-enabled checkout may result in a purchase from a merchant. Do not treat a token count, tool call, or order shown in an agent interface as a complete financial ledger.

  • Model and API charges: provider usage and cost records.
  • Runs, requests, and tools: agent-framework records plus your own application logs.
  • Purchases: the merchant’s order record and the payment service provider’s transaction record.

Where to look for each type of spend

Model and API charges

Start with the relevant provider organization’s usage dashboard or API. OpenAI’s Usage Dashboard can show current and past billing periods, uses UTC, supports project selection, and permits individual-user filtering for Responses and Chat Completions. OpenAI also notes that the dashboard does not combine usage or costs across organizations, so check each organization that could have handled the agent’s requests. See OpenAI’s guide to reviewing API usage and costs.

Usage activity and financial cost reporting are not interchangeable. OpenAI’s help documentation directs users to the Costs dashboard view or Costs endpoint for financial reporting and invoice reconciliation; credit-grant information is also distinct from usage activity. The Usage API reference documents provider-side usage data, while the Costs view is the relevant route described for reconciling financial costs.

Agent runs, requests, and tool activity

Provider dashboards can show model usage without explaining which business task caused it. Add application-level identifiers—such as task ID, user ID, workflow, project, or agent ID—to your request and run records so you can connect provider usage to the work that triggered it.

The OpenAI Agents SDK automatically tracks token usage for each run, aggregates usage across model calls (including calls that produce tool calls or handoffs), and exposes request-level entries for more detailed cost calculation and context-window monitoring. Its usage documentation explains those records. OpenAI’s observability and usage guide describes session and turn records that can help inspect agent activity and delegated commands.

Purchases and payments

For an agent-assisted purchase, use the merchant’s order record and the payment service provider’s transaction record as the financial trail. OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol documentation says the merchant and its payment service provider process the payment, and OpenAI is not the merchant of record. The assistant surface is therefore not the authoritative transaction ledger. Follow the order ID and payment record through the merchant and payment provider; the protocol describes a bounded delegated payment request, payment token, and merchant-side processing. See Agentic Commerce key concepts.

A practical investigation workflow

  1. Classify the charge or activity. Decide whether you are investigating model/API usage, a tool or connected-service fee, or a merchant purchase. More than one category may apply to the same task.
  2. Choose the provider organization and billing period. Confirm which organization handled the requests and compare the same billing window. For OpenAI’s Usage Dashboard, remember that displayed data uses UTC.
  3. Filter by the dimensions available to you. Check project, team, user, product, model, run, and request fields where supported. Filters differ by provider and plan. For example, Anthropic says Claude Enterprise analytics can be filtered by date range, team, product, or model, and describes spend caps, exports, and an Analytics API in its July 2, 2026 announcement.
  4. Trace activity back to an application task. Match request and run records to your own logs using stable identifiers. Use run-level usage for a summary and request-level entries when you need to inspect individual model calls, tool calls, or handoffs.
  5. Reconcile usage with cost records and invoices. Compare provider-side costs for the same period with the provider’s financial reporting and invoice. Do not assume token or usage activity alone equals the billed amount.
  6. For a purchase, follow the order ID. Verify the order with the merchant and the payment with its payment provider rather than relying on an agent transcript or assistant interface.

How to choose the right monitoring view

When selecting or evaluating a dashboard, API, or logging setup, check what each source actually covers. A useful setup makes it possible to trace both the financial record and the agent activity that caused it without assuming one product contains everything.

Check What to establish
Spending layer Does it cover provider usage, tool/service fees, merchant orders, payment transactions, or only some of these?
Attribution detail Can you filter or join by organization, project, user, team, product, model, run, request, task, or order ID?
Export and API access Can you export records or retrieve them through an API for your own reconciliation?
Time alignment What time zone do records use, and do the compared records cover the same billing period?
Controls and access Which permissions, alerts, or spend caps are available for the relevant product and plan?
Financial reconciliation Can reported provider costs be matched to an invoice, or purchases to merchant and payment-provider records?

Vendor features and integrations vary. Anthropic, for example, describes analytics exports and an Analytics API, with destinations including Datadog Cloud Cost Management and CloudZero; that does not establish that either destination covers every provider, agent framework, or commerce transaction. Check the documented scope of each source you use.

Do not confuse lower token prices with lower total agent spend

OpenAI reported a 97% decrease in price per million tokens from GPT-4 to GPT-5.4 in its July 14, 2026 article, “How to manage AI investments in the agentic era”. That is the company’s comparison between those named models, not a measurement of how much an individual agent spends. It does not account for a particular agent’s request volume, tool costs, or purchases. For budgeting, OpenAI advises leaders to consider “useful work per dollar,” including tasks completed, time saved, decisions improved, and workflows ready to scale.
