Use the ended stream’s audience-retention report to see whether viewers’ attention changed around the moment the ad actually appeared. Compare equal-length windows before and after that moment, and check total watch time and average view duration separately. A decline is evidence of a post-break change, not proof that the ad caused it: some viewers may not have received an ad, and other changes in the stream or audience can affect the same metrics.
Where to find the relevant YouTube Studio metrics
- In YouTube Studio, open the ended stream’s video-level analytics and find the audience-retention report under key moments. YouTube describes this report as showing how well different moments held viewers’ attention. YouTube’s live-stream metrics guide explains the available reports.
- Inspect the retention curve around the break, then note total watch time and average view duration. Total watch time is the total time the event was played across all views; average view duration is the estimated average minutes watched per view. They are different measures, so do not treat one as a substitute for the other.
- Use average concurrent viewers as context for how many people were watching at once. Concurrent viewers describe audience size at a point in time, not accumulated viewing time.
Choose one reporting surface and use it consistently. YouTube says Analytics data is based on the video ID, is processed and despammed, and measures different information from Live Control Room. Live reports are available at video level; metrics become available within minutes after a stream ends, and data can be downloaded as CSV. Allow for processing and preserve the report you use so you can repeat the comparison on the same basis.
Find when viewers actually saw the ad
Do not assume the cuepoint timestamp is the interruption time. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation says an immediate cuepoint can be followed by a delay of around 30 seconds before ad content is visible to users; the broadcast remains visible during that delay. If possible, use a timestamped recording or an audience-facing monitor to locate the ad’s visible start and end, then align the retention curve to that viewer experience. A cuepoint also does not mean every viewer received an ad. YouTube attempts to play an ad for viewers watching when the cuepoint is inserted, but delivery depends on factors including ad availability and viewing history. Viewers who do not receive an ad continue seeing the broadcast. As YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle documentation puts it: “Whether an ad plays depends on a variety of factors, such as ad availability and the viewer’s ad-viewing history.” A stream-wide retention change therefore combines viewers who may have seen an ad with viewers who may not have.

Compare watch time around the break
- Record the event times. Write down the cuepoint time and, if you can observe it, the viewer-visible start and end of the ad break. Keep the two timestamps distinct.
- Choose equal-length windows. Compare a period immediately before the viewer-visible interruption with an equal-length period after it. Use the retention curve to locate changes, and examine watch-time measures for those windows where the report supports a meaningful comparison. You can also compare equivalent segments from similar streams.
- Keep the comparison like for like. Align window length, metric definition, reporting surface, stream or content segment, and audience trend or size as closely as possible. Note any change in pacing, topic, or other stream conditions that coincided with the break.
- State what the result shows. If the post-break window has lower retention or watch-time measures, describe a post-break decline or an association. A single before-and-after curve cannot rule out an existing audience trend or a content change, so it does not by itself establish that the ad caused the decline.
- Save your working records. Preserve the exported report and event timestamps. That lets you repeat the comparison after YouTube has processed the data or compare it with another stream.
This is an observational comparison, not a viewer-level exposure analysis. The reviewed YouTube documentation does not establish that standard Studio metrics provide a complete record linking each viewer’s ad receipt to that viewer’s later watch time. Do not infer a causal difference between ad recipients and non-recipients from the stream-wide report alone.
What the result can—and cannot—tell you
- Retention and watch time: useful for spotting whether attention or accumulated viewing changed around a moment.
- Average concurrent viewers: useful context for the number of people watching at once, but it is not watch time.
- A visible drop: a signal that the measured audience changed around the break, not a measured amount of watch time caused or lost by the ad.
- No clear drop: does not establish that no individual viewer left because of an ad; stream-wide metrics can include viewers who did not receive one.
YouTube’s documentation explains the metrics and ad-delivery variation, but does not establish a standard Studio report that isolates watch time caused or lost specifically by an ad break. No percentage loss should be attributed to a break on the basis of a before-and-after curve alone.

How ad scheduling affects comparisons
If you are comparing streams that used different automatic ad settings, account for the setting as well as the measured outcome. YouTube’s LiveBroadcasts API documentation describes LOW, MEDIUM, and HIGH automatic cuepoint modes as tradeoffs in earnings potential and viewer interruption. It also distinguishes concurrent from non-concurrent scheduling, which can change cuepoint timing across viewers. Those differences can make two breaks less directly comparable; they do not provide a causal watch-time estimate.
