To tame a nautilus in Minecraft, feed it a pufferfish or a bucket of pufferfish. Once tamed, equip it with a saddle to ride it. This guide covers the Mounts of Mayhem mechanics in Java Edition 1.21.11 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.130.
How to tame and ride a nautilus
- Find a nautilus in an ocean. In Bedrock Edition 1.21.130, nautiluses spawn in all ocean biomes at Y-levels 38 to 58. These location details are specific to the Bedrock release notes.
- Feed it pufferfish. Use a pufferfish or a bucket of pufferfish. The official notes do not specify a fixed number of feedings.
- Equip a saddle to ride it. While mounted, you receive Breath of the Nautilus: oxygen consumption pauses. The effect does not replenish oxygen, so it will not refill an oxygen bar that is already depleted.
Java Edition 1.21.11 also lists pufferfish and a bucket of pufferfish as foods for breeding nautiluses. Taming and breeding are separate mechanics.
How to tame a zombie nautilus
A zombie nautilus may have a hostile drowned rider. Remove or defeat the rider first; then feed the mount pufferfish to tame it. The official guidance establishes this order but does not prescribe a particular combat method.

Which Minecraft versions include the mechanic?
The nautilus mechanics are part of Mounts of Mayhem. The official release notes describe them for Java Edition 1.21.11 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.130.
