Talk with your 12-year-old about their phone and body image as an ongoing, low-pressure conversation—not a lecture or a one-time set of rules. Start by asking what they enjoy, what they see, and how it makes them feel. Listen first, discuss how online images can be edited or carefully selected without criticizing your child’s body, then agree on practical family habits together. If you notice sustained changes in eating, sleep, mood, exercise, or relationships, contact their pediatrician.
Start with your child’s experience
Choose a calm moment, such as a routine drive or a quiet conversation at home. A casual opening can make it easier for your child to talk than a sudden, high-stakes “phone talk.” Keep questions open-ended and follow the child’s lead.
- “What do you like doing on your phone?”
- “Which apps do you enjoy, and who do you usually talk to or follow?”
- “How do you feel after you’ve been on that app?”
- “Have you seen anything that made you uncomfortable?”
- “Does anything you see make you feel pressured about how you look?”
- “What would help you feel rested and have time for other things?”
Listen without immediately correcting, investigating, or taking the phone away. If your child shares something worrying, thank them for telling you and ask what support they want. Make clear they can come to you about embarrassing or upsetting online experiences and that you will try to help rather than blame them. The AAP’s social media conversation guidance recommends asking about a young person’s experience and keeping communication open.
Discuss images without making their body the problem
Social feeds can show images that are posed, filtered, edited, or selected to present an idealized version of a person’s life or appearance. You can help your child examine what they see without implying that their own body needs fixing.

- “Do you think this image shows the whole story?”
- “What might have been edited, staged, or carefully chosen?”
- “How does seeing posts like this affect the way you feel about yourself?”
The goal is not to teach your child to distrust every image. It is to help them question whether a post is representative and notice how it affects them. The American Psychological Association’s 2023 advisory links appearance-based social comparison and excessive focus on one’s own photos and feedback with poorer body image, disordered eating, and depressive symptoms, particularly among girls. Those links do not establish that every child will be harmed or that social media alone caused an outcome.
Reassure your child that bodies and puberty develop in different ways and on different timelines; there is no single ideal body. Comparing oneself with people in media is developmentally normal, and a comparison can still feel painful. The AAP’s guidance for young teens ages 11 to 14 recommends helping them recognize idealized body images and false or mean content while affirming that bodies and puberty journeys vary.

Make phone habits a family agreement
Instead of relying on a universal screen-time number, work out which routines support your child’s sleep, schoolwork, relationships, physical activity, mood, and privacy. Invite your child to help shape the agreement so it addresses real situations in their life.

You might open the discussion with the AAP’s sample prompt: “I’d like us to talk about our family’s approach for setting some boundaries around technology and media use.” Then agree on what happens, when it happens, and how you will handle exceptions. Review the arrangement as your child’s needs change. The AAP provides a free Family Media Plan to help families make these decisions.

Notice changes and know when to seek help
Pay attention to patterns over time rather than treating one bad mood or one long session as proof that the phone is causing a problem. Contact your child’s pediatrician or family doctor if you see sustained or concerning changes such as:
- Major changes in eating, or extreme or obsessive exercise
- Ongoing sleep problems or persistent worries
- Loss of interest in friends or usual activities, or increased isolation
- Significant mood or body-image concerns
The AAP’s young-teen guidance identifies these kinds of changes as reasons to contact a doctor. If your child mentions suicidal thoughts, take them seriously and seek immediate local crisis or emergency support.

Listen, offer support, and discuss the platform’s reporting options; preserve relevant information if appropriate and involve healthcare or safeguarding support when needed. The U.S. Surgeon General’s advisory on social media and youth mental health recommends supportive, nonjudgmental responses and discussing reporting options in these situations.
Put population statistics in perspective
An AAP summary of research reports that 38% of children ages 8–12 used social media and that 35% of teens ages 13–17 used selected services—including YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat—“almost constantly” in 2022. These are reported population figures from that year, not a current 2026 estimate, a measure of your child’s use, or proof that social media causes harm. Use your child’s own experience and wellbeing to guide the conversation.
