Start with curiosity, not a warning: ask, “What do you like about it?” or “When do you feel like you need one?” Hear them out, then share one specific concern and agree on a practical next step. The goal is an honest conversation—not a perfect script or a guaranteed way to avoid disagreement.

How to start the conversation

Choose a neutral moment rather than raising the issue in the middle of an argument or immediately after finding a can. Keep the first question open-ended. Your child might mention the taste, wanting more energy for sports, staying awake, or fitting in with friends; these are possibilities to explore, not assumptions to make.

  1. Ask and listen. Try “What do you like about it?” or “When do you feel like you need one?”
  2. Reflect what you heard. For example: “So you like the taste, and you thought it would help you stay awake.” This makes room for their perspective before you offer yours.
  3. Share one or two concerns. Keep it specific—such as caffeine making it harder to sleep or leaving them jittery—rather than reciting every possible health effect.
  4. Look at the label together. Check the container’s serving size and caffeine amount. Explain that products and container sizes vary, and caffeine can also come from ingredients such as guarana.
  5. Agree on a next step. Depending on what they need, that might be choosing water, checking caffeine in drinks together, or asking their pediatrician about their intake.

Adapt your words to your child’s age. Avoid shame and focus on the need behind the drink. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises parents to talk with children about healthy choices and help them notice how caffeine makes their bodies feel. The AAP’s parent guide includes a warning from pediatrician Tamara S. Hannon: “They have a profound negative impact on sleep.”

What to explain about caffeine

The AAP says energy drinks are not appropriate for children and adolescents, and its parent guide says avoiding caffeine is the best choice for children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports the AAP recommendation that adolescents avoid consuming more than 100 mg of caffeine per day. That is an upper daily limit—not a target and not an endorsement of energy drinks.

Caffeine amounts differ considerably. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gives a typical range of 41–246 mg per 12 fluid ounces of energy drink, based on category-level data. The FDA’s table draws on a June 2015 study; individual products and container sizes vary, so check the label rather than assuming a can contains a particular amount.

Too much caffeine can disrupt sleep and cause anxiety or jitters, an increased heart rate, palpitations, high blood pressure, or digestive problems. The CDC also lists dehydration, heart complications, anxiety, and insomnia as potential dangers of energy drinks. Caffeine may remain in the body for more than eight hours, depending on metabolism; when it wears off, a child may experience headache, irritability, or tiredness. That timing is not the same for everyone.

Clarify whether they want hydration or energy

If they want a drink for sports

Energy drinks and sports drinks are different products; the AAP says the terms should not be used interchangeably. Energy drinks are marketed for stimulation. Sports drinks are flavored beverages that often contain carbohydrates and electrolytes. Water is the principal hydration source for children and adolescents. For average routine activity, the AAP says sports drinks in place of water are generally unnecessary; they have a limited role during prolonged, vigorous activity.

If your child plays sports, you can read the label together and talk about what the drink is intended to do. The CDC suggests that coaches teach athletes the difference between energy drinks and sports drinks and how to read labels. The CDC also advises adults: “Everyone can model healthy behavior by not drinking energy drinks in front of kids.”

If they want help staying awake

Ask what is making them tired and whether their sleep or schedule is part of the problem. The AAP parent guide says caffeine is not a substitute for lost sleep. Discussing rest and routines addresses the need more directly than treating an energy drink as a fix.

When to involve a health professional

Talk with your child’s pediatrician about concerns involving caffeine, especially if your child has a health condition or takes medication. The FDA likewise advises discussing a child or teen’s caffeine consumption with a health professional.

Why checking the label matters

The FDA says it does not have a regulation specific to energy drinks; general ingredient regulations still apply. That distinction is not, by itself, proof that every product is unsafe or unregulated. For a parent and child, the practical point is to check the specific product’s serving size, caffeine amount, and ingredients rather than relying on the drink’s name or marketing.
