Use Power Automate for desktop’s Browser automation > Take screenshot of web page action. Launch or attach to a supported browser, open the URL, choose Entire web page or Specific element, then save the result to a file or the clipboard. The action captures the rendered page currently displayed in the browser; it does not return an output variable.
This guide shows the exact flow, browser connection choices, image formats, unattended-run diagnostics, and the correct action when you need a screen, window, or desktop control rather than website content.
Build the website screenshot flow
- Create or open a desktop flow. Open Power Automate for desktop and create a new flow, or edit an existing one.
- Launch or attach to a browser. Add Launch new Microsoft Edge, Launch new Chrome, or Launch new Firefox. Internet Explorer is also listed as a supported launch action. You can instead attach to an existing supported browser when using the browser-automation method that permits it. Keep the browser instance variable created by the launch action.
- Open the target page. Put the address in the launch action’s initial URL field, or add Go to web page and pass the browser instance variable.
- Add the capture action. In the action pane, select Browser automation > Take screenshot of web page.
- Choose the capture scope. Select Entire web page for the complete rendered page, or Specific element for one webpage element. The element option requires a web UI element captured with the browser-automation UI-element picker.
- Choose where and how to save it. Set Save mode to File and enter a full path when the image must remain on disk. Choose Clipboard when the next action will consume the image directly from the clipboard. Select PNG or JPG for normal evidence and documentation, or BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, TIFF, or WMF when your downstream application requires one of those formats.
- Run and verify. The action produces no output variable. The saved file, or the clipboard contents, is the result. Confirm that the file exists at the path you supplied before moving to later flow steps.
A typical file destination is a directory that already exists and is writable, such as C:AutomationScreenshotscheckout.png. If the flow processes multiple pages, construct a unique filename for each URL so later captures do not overwrite earlier ones.
Entire page versus one element
Capture the entire web page
Choose Entire web page when you need a page-level record: a landing page, invoice, report, product detail page, or test artifact. The action captures the web page currently displayed in the browser, not the monitor around it. Browser chrome, taskbars, and other applications are excluded.

Capture a specific webpage element
Choose Specific element when a full-page image would contain irrelevant material. Use the browser automation picker to capture the target web UI element first, then select that element in the screenshot action. Web elements and desktop UI elements are different models; a desktop element captured by UI automation cannot be substituted for a webpage element.
If the target is a chart, table, card, or other component rendered inside the page, recapture that component with the web picker whenever its structure or selector changes. A selector that no longer matches causes the documented “Element with specified CSS selector not found” exception.
Which Power Automate screenshot action should you use?

Use the browser action for a website even when the browser is maximized. Use Workstation > Take screenshot only when you intentionally need the visible monitor or foreground window, including browser borders and other desktop content.
Browser connection methods: extension or WebDriver
Browser extension (default)
Power Automate for desktop’s browser automation normally uses its browser extension. Install and enable the required extension for the browser you automate. If the browser cannot be controlled, verify the extension before changing the flow itself.

WebDriver
With WebDriver, the executable must match the installed browser version and be placed in:

WebDriver-based automation can attach only to browser instances launched by the flow. It cannot attach to a browser window that a person opened manually. If you need to work with a manually opened window, use a supported extension-based connection instead.
Recording and UI elements
The recorder can generate browser-automation and UI-automation actions while you demonstrate a process. It is useful for creating the first draft, but check every captured element afterward: webpage elements belong to browser automation, while controls outside the page belong to UI automation.

Make captures reliable in attended and unattended runs
Use a deterministic browser instance
Store and reuse the instance variable returned by the launch action. Do not silently switch between a manually opened browser and the instance controlled by the flow, especially when WebDriver is selected.
Save to a prepared path
Create the destination directory before the screenshot action and verify write permission for the account that runs the flow. A path that works interactively may fail in an unattended session if that account cannot access the folder.
Add before-and-after diagnostics
For an unattended failure, put one Take screenshot action immediately before the suspected failing action and another immediately afterward. Save them with names such as before.png and after.png. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends this pattern because it shows whether the browser reached the expected state and whether the failure occurred before or after the target action.
Account for session state
An unattended run can report Failed to take screenshot with an invalid window handle. Check the desktop/session state used by the unattended run and follow Microsoft’s dedicated troubleshooting guidance for that error. A disconnected, locked, or otherwise unavailable interactive session can prevent a window-based capture even when the same flow succeeds while attended.

Formats and destination choices
File output
File mode is the durable option for audit trails, tickets, test artifacts, and later processing. Supply a complete filename, including the extension you intend to use, and ensure the parent directory exists. If saving fails, check both the path and the account’s write permission; the action reports file-save failures separately from clipboard-save failures.
Clipboard output
Clipboard mode is useful when the next step pastes the image into a document, message, or other application. It is transient: another clipboard operation can replace the image, and there is no screenshot output variable to recover it later. If a later step needs a file, use File mode instead.
Image formats
PNG and JPG are the practical defaults for website evidence. The action also documents BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, TIFF, and WMF. Select the format required by the receiving system rather than renaming a file extension after capture.

“Element with specified CSS selector not found”
- Recapture the web UI element with the browser-automation picker.
- Confirm that the browser is on the expected page before the screenshot action.
- Check whether the page changed the element’s structure or selector.
- If the target is outside the webpage, switch to UI automation or Workstation capture instead of using a web element.
The browser cannot be automated
- Confirm that the required browser extension is installed and enabled.
- If using WebDriver, verify that the executable matches the browser version.
- Confirm that the WebDriver executable is in
%LocalAppData%MicrosoftPower Automate DesktopWebDrivers. - Remember that WebDriver attaches only to browser instances launched by the flow.
The image cannot be saved
- Check that the destination directory exists.
- Check write permissions for the identity running the flow.
- Use a full path and a filename with the intended extension.
- Try a known-writable local directory to separate a path problem from a browser problem.
Clipboard saving fails
Make sure the run has access to the desktop session and that another action has not replaced or locked the clipboard. If the image must survive several subsequent actions, choose File mode.

Unattended capture reports an invalid window handle
Use the before-and-after diagnostic screenshots, verify the unattended desktop/session configuration, and consult Microsoft’s troubleshooting procedure for Failed to take screenshot. This error concerns the run’s window context, not necessarily the website itself.
When Power Automate is the right approach
- Choose the browser screenshot action when the capture is one step in a larger desktop flow that already logs in, navigates, enters data, or copies results.
- Choose a specific element when you need only a webpage component and have a stable web UI element.
- Choose Workstation capture when the evidence must include the visible monitor, browser frame, or another application.
- Choose UI automation capture when the target is a desktop control rather than page content.
