Capture a screenshot with Selenium
Selenium’s WebDriver screenshot methods return an image of the current page or element. In Python, save_screenshot() writes the current browsing context to a PNG file, while an element’s screenshot() method saves just that element. The following example uses illustrative selectors and a ten-second wait; adjust both to match the application and your Selenium binding version.

Wait for the page’s visual state, not just navigation
A successful navigation does not guarantee that the page is ready for a visual assertion. A single-page app may continue loading content after document.readyState becomes complete. Selenium’s Browser Options documentation cautions: “This does not necessarily mean that the page has finished loading.” Wait for a condition that corresponds to what the screenshot should show, such as the target component becoming visible or a loading indicator disappearing. These strategies change when navigation returns; none guarantees that later application content has rendered. Choose based on the application’s loading behavior, then wait for the state that matters to the test.
Choose what to capture
Current browsing context
Use the driver-level screenshot when the test concerns the page layout or current browsing context as a whole. Selenium’s JavaScript API describes its screenshot scope as best-effort: entire page, current window, visible portion of the current frame, then the entire display containing the browser. A particular element
Use an element screenshot when the assertion is about a component, such as a navigation bar or product card. A focused image is easier to inspect when unrelated page content is not part of the check. Find the element after the readiness wait so the capture does not race its rendering.
Save useful, repeatable artifacts
Give files deterministic names based on the page and state being captured, for example checkout-empty.png or account-signed-in.png. For pixel comparisons, include browser or viewport identifiers where needed to distinguish artifacts. Selenium’s screenshot endpoint returns Base64-encoded image data; convenience methods in language bindings can save it as a PNG, while other workflows can decode and write the returned data themselves. Keep the capture environment consistent with the baseline. Record the browser, driver, viewport, operating system or container, and relevant rendering inputs. Selenium supports browser-specific options and capabilities rather than prescribing one universal visual-test configuration. Turn captures into visual checks
A screenshot is an artifact, not a pass/fail decision. Your separately selected comparison or review step must define what counts as an acceptable difference. The Selenium documentation cited here does not prescribe a visual-diff algorithm, pixel tolerance, masking policy, or CI report format; choose and document those rules for the project rather than treating Selenium as the comparator.

Troubleshoot missing or unreliable screenshots
- The screenshot is blank or missing content: the app may still be rendering after navigation. Wait for a visible target or for the page’s own loading indicator to disappear before capture.
- An element capture fails because the element cannot be found: verify the selector and wait for the element to exist and be visible before calling its screenshot method.
- The output file is not created: confirm the destination directory exists and that the test process can write there. Check whether the binding’s save method returned success.
- Chrome session setup fails due to incompatible versions: check the installed Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions; Selenium’s Chrome guidance says they must match.
- Images differ between runs or machines: compare the browser, driver, viewport, operating system or container, and other rendering inputs used for each capture. The Selenium documentation does not define a canonical viewport or acceptable diff threshold.

Does Selenium decide whether a screenshot is a visual regression?
No. Selenium captures the image; a separate comparison or review process determines whether a change is acceptable.
Can I capture only one component instead of the whole page?
