In Power Automate for desktop (PAD), launch or attach to a supported browser, navigate to the page, wait until the content you need is ready, then use the browser action Take screenshot of web page. Choose an entire-page or specific-element capture and save it to a file or the clipboard. For a screenshot of the visible desktop or a browser window, use the separate workstation Take screenshot action. A cloud flow can trigger the desktop flow, but that requires a configured machine, connection, account, and appropriate licensing.
Choose the screenshot action for the target
Power Automate for desktop has two similarly named actions with different jobs. Use the browser action when the output should be webpage content; use the workstation action when it should show what is displayed on a screen.

Microsoft describes the browser action as taking a screenshot of the webpage, or an element of it, currently displayed in the browser and saving it to a file or clipboard. See the Browser automation actions reference and Workstation actions reference.
Build a desktop flow to capture a webpage
The basic workflow is to launch the browser through the flow, navigate to the URL, wait for the relevant content to appear, and capture it. Microsoft lists Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer in its web automation guide; confirm browser support and setup for the PAD version and environment you use. The examples below describe the action sequence in the PAD designer rather than a standalone script.

- Create a desktop flow. Open Power Automate for desktop and create a new flow. Add the browser actions through the designer.
- Launch or attach to the browser. Use the appropriate Launch new browser action for the browser and store its browser instance output. Browser automation commonly uses the PAD browser extension. WebDriver is an alternative interaction method and must be configured on the machine.
- Navigate to the target. Use a browser navigation action with the target URL. If the site needs authentication, handle sign-in according to your organization’s security policy and avoid storing credentials in plain text.
- Wait for the page state you need. Use a browser wait action or wait for a specific webpage UI element that signals the needed content is present. For content that loads asynchronously, do not assume the initial page navigation means all images, charts, or results are ready.
- Add the screenshot action. In the browser automation actions, add Take screenshot of web page. Choose Entire web page to capture the page or Specific element and select the captured webpage UI element for a focused capture.
- Set the output. Choose File and provide a destination path to persist the image, or choose Clipboard if the next flow action consumes the image there. The documented file formats are BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF.
- Run and validate. Test the flow against the real page and verify that the file exists, opens, and contains the intended content. Add error handling around selector waits and the output destination where a missed element or unwritable path is plausible.
Make the capture repeatable
Web pages do not all become capture-ready at the same moment. A fixed delay can be useful for a known, stable site, but it is not a universal guarantee. Prefer waiting for a meaningful page element or state that appears only when the content to capture is ready. If a page is long or uses lazy loading, test whether the required lower-page content is rendered before capture; the cited PAD documentation does not promise that every site will load every deferred asset automatically.
Use webpage UI elements with browser actions. These differ from desktop UI elements, which represent application-level controls such as browser chrome. If you need to automate a browser menu or another control outside the webpage, use desktop UI automation for that part rather than passing a desktop element into the webpage screenshot action.
Capture the screen or foreground window instead
When the image needs to show the visible desktop state rather than the webpage’s document, use workstation Take screenshot. It can target all screens, the primary screen, a selected screen, or the foreground window, then save to a file or clipboard. It offers the same documented file-format family: BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF.

This distinction matters when browser chrome, a dialog, or another application is part of the evidence you need. Conversely, a desktop capture is not a substitute for the browser webpage action when the intended result is page content rather than the currently visible display.

Run the desktop flow from a cloud flow
A cloud flow can start a desktop flow for scheduled or event-driven automation. It is not just a browser action: the desktop flow runs on a machine or machine group registered with Power Automate, and the cloud-to-desktop connection and licensing must be set up for the chosen execution mode.
- Register the host. Set up a physical or virtual machine or machine group for desktop-flow execution.
- Configure the account and connection. Use a work or school account and create a desktop-flow connection for the registered machine.
- Confirm licensing and run mode. Microsoft says an appropriate attended license or unattended add-on is needed, and the connection creator must hold the needed license. Check current tenant licensing and machine configuration before deployment; licensing availability and terms can change.
- Build the cloud trigger. Create the required event or schedule in the cloud flow and add the action to run the desktop flow through its connection.
- Test the actual execution session. Verify that the browser opens and that the screenshot reaches the expected output location under the deployed run mode, not only in a local interactive test.
Microsoft’s guide to triggering desktop flows from cloud flows documents operational limits, including up to 70 desktop-flow runs per minute for each connection and a 2 MB desktop-flow input size limit (1 MB in China regions). These are orchestration limits, not screenshot-speed or image-quality figures; confirm the current documentation if either number affects a design.

Browser setup and execution-mode limitations
WebDriver attaches only to browsers it launches
In WebDriver mode, PAD can attach only to browser instances launched by the flow; it cannot attach to a browser that someone opened manually. The WebDriver executable must match the browser version and be set up on the machine. If an existing manually opened browser is essential, use the documented extension-based interaction method or redesign the flow so it launches the browser itself.
Picture-in-picture does not support screenshot capture
Microsoft documents screenshot capture in the picture-in-picture virtual desktop as unsupported. Do not assume a flow that works in a normal session will capture successfully in that mode. Test the deployment session that will actually run the flow.
Unattended failures may be tied to screen-access policy
Microsoft documents a specific unattended error, Failed to take screenshot, when a security policy affecting a UAC prompt prevents screen access. Treat this as a targeted troubleshooting case, not proof that all unattended screenshots fail. Review Microsoft’s desktop-flow troubleshooting guidance and involve an administrator before changing security policy or registry settings.

Troubleshoot common screenshot failures

For resilience, handle failures where they occur: a wait can time out, a selector can be absent, a file write can fail, and clipboard use can be unavailable. Log which step failed and preserve the page URL and run context when permitted, so a retry does not conceal a persistent configuration error.

The desktop-flow approach depends on a running and correctly configured machine, browser automation setup, a reachable target site, and a suitable session. Screenshot capture itself does not have a published speed or quality guarantee in the Microsoft material cited here. Execution time is therefore site- and environment-dependent: navigation, client-side rendering, authentication, network conditions, and waits can matter more than the screenshot action.
For recurring captures, favor event- or schedule-driven orchestration only when the host machine and connection can be available at the required time. Validate unattended licensing and session behavior before relying on a production schedule. The documentation’s run-rate and input-size figures describe cloud-flow triggering, not the number of screenshots a desktop flow can reliably produce per hour.

Power Automate licensing and capacity depend on the tenant, attended or unattended mode, and current Microsoft terms; check the relevant licensing for your deployment rather than assuming a desktop-only test establishes production cost. Also account for maintaining the machine, browser, extensions or WebDriver, output storage, and credentials.
