Notion does not capture arbitrary websites on a schedule by itself. Build a workflow with four parts: a browser script or screenshot API captures each URL, the result is exposed as a direct image URL, the Notion API writes an image block or database file property, and a scheduler or Notion webhook starts the run. This guide shows both a self-managed implementation and a hosted alternative.
What the automation actually does
A Notion embed displays online content, but it is not a recurring screenshot engine. An automated snapshot pipeline is:
- Select the pages and decide whether each image belongs inline on a Notion page or in a database row.
- Capture the URL with browser automation, your own service, or a screenshot API.
- Make the resulting file available at a direct, publicly reachable image URL (or use an upload flow appropriate to your Notion setup).
- Append an external image block to a page, or set a database Files & Media property.
- Run the workflow on a schedule or start it from a Notion automation webhook.
Notion’s regular embeds and image blocks are different. An embed can show an external page or app; an image block needs the image itself. Notion’s documented external-image format supports BMP, GIF, HEIC, JPEG, JPG, PNG, SVG, TIF and TIFF, and the URL must point directly to that file rather than to a service that fetches it.

No single approach is universally best. Compare coding effort, scheduling, image hosting, URL compatibility, privacy and recurring cost for your workload.
DIY workflow: capture, host and write to Notion
1. Prepare the Notion destination
- Create an integration in Notion and copy its token.
- Share the destination page or database with that integration; otherwise API calls will be unauthorized.
- Record the page ID, or the database ID and the property name that will hold the image.
- Decide whether each run appends a new dated block or replaces the current database property. Replacing avoids an ever-growing page; appending preserves history.
2. Capture the website
With Playwright or Puppeteer, launch a browser, navigate to the URL, wait for the page to settle, and call a full-page screenshot. Handle cookie dialogs, lazy images, login requirements and sites that prohibit automation. Save the PNG or JPEG in object storage or another HTTPS host that serves the image directly with an appropriate content type.
3. Create an image block
The Notion API image block uses an external URL. Conceptually, the request body is:

For a database, set the Files & Media property according to the current page-property schema instead of appending a block.
4. Verify one image before scheduling
- Open the image URL without authentication. It should return the image itself, not an HTML redirect or JSON response.
- Use a supported format and confirm the host does not immediately expire or block Notion’s fetch.
- Check that the integration can edit the exact page or database.
- Confirm the source site permits the capture and that important content is visible after your wait condition.
Scheduling and Notion webhooks
External schedules
Run the script with cron, a CI scheduler, a serverless timer or an automation platform. Store Notion tokens and storage credentials as secrets. Add retries with exponential backoff, an idempotency key or timestamp, and logs containing the URL, capture status, image URL and Notion response. Keep the capture and Notion-update steps separate so a temporary Notion outage does not force a second screenshot unnecessarily.

Notion-triggered runs
Notion documents webhook actions for buttons and database automations. The action sends POST requests to your endpoint; it does not capture a page or send page contents. Webhooks are available in automations on paid plans, can include database page properties, allow up to five webhook actions per automation, and a failed action can pause the automation until you resume it manually. Consult Notion’s webhook documentation for current eligibility and limits.
Your endpoint should authenticate the request, validate the payload, enqueue the capture, return quickly, and report failures through logs or a status property. Do not put a Notion token in a client-side button or public URL.

The block is rejected as invalid
Check that you used the current Notion-Version, the integration has access, and the image URL is direct HTTPS rather than a page, redirect, signed request requiring missing headers or an image-fetching endpoint.
Notion shows a broken image
Open the URL in an incognito window, inspect its content type, certificate and expiry, and ensure the host permits external retrieval. Replace short-lived URLs or use a durable object-storage URL.
The screenshot contains a consent banner or popup
Add a browser step that accepts or hides the element, wait for the resulting layout, or use ScreenshotNeo’s pre-capture consent and nuisance-widget removal.
The page is blank or incomplete
Wait for a selector, a fixed delay or network idle; scroll to trigger lazy loading; increase navigation timeouts; and capture authenticated pages with carefully scoped cookies or headers.

A webhook stopped running
Inspect the endpoint’s HTTP status and logs, confirm the automation is still enabled, and manually resume it if Notion paused it after a failure. Remember that the webhook sends properties, not page contents.
Duplicate rows or blocks appear
Use a deterministic page key and capture timestamp, search for an existing row before inserting, or update one Files & Media property instead of always appending.

- Reliability: use retries, timeouts, queueing and alerting; record both capture and Notion outcomes.
- Performance: parallelize independent URLs within provider and site limits, but avoid overwhelming the source site; cache unchanged pages where acceptable.
- Privacy: treat screenshots as potentially sensitive, restrict storage access, minimize retention and avoid putting credentials in URLs.
- Version drift: Notion API schemas, plan rules, provider options and promotional terms can change. Recheck the linked documentation before production rollout.
FAQ
Can Notion refresh a website screenshot without code?
Not by itself. A Notion automation can trigger an external endpoint, but that endpoint must perform capture, hosting and the Notion update.
Can I use a normal embed instead of an image block?
Only when you want Notion to display the external page or app. A saved screenshot requires an image block or a database file property.

What happens if the source website blocks embedding?
That affects live embeds. A screenshot workflow may still work if the page can be captured lawfully, but the source can also block bots, require login or return a challenge.

Use a script when you need complete control, a hosted API when you want managed capture, and a Notion webhook only as the trigger. In every case, Notion stores the result; the capture engine and image hosting remain external.
