Use Selenium’s regular screenshot method to save the rendered browser view as a PNG; you do not need to convert inline SVG graphics first. For a close-up, take a screenshot of the SVG element or its container. For the entire scrollable document, use a full-page method supported by your browser and Selenium binding.
Choose the screenshot scope
- Current browser view: Use
driver.save_screenshot("page.png")to capture the browser’s current context. - One chart or SVG: Find the SVG element or a containing element and call its
screenshot()method. This captures the element rather than the whole browser view. - Entire scrollable document: Use a full-page screenshot method if your browser and Selenium binding support one. Selenium’s Firefox Python API documents full-page methods; do not assume the ordinary screenshot command captures content outside the current view.
Selenium’s documented screenshot file methods save PNG images. See the Selenium browser-window documentation for current-context and element examples, and the Firefox Python WebDriver API for full-page methods.
Capture an SVG and the page in Python
This example saves the first inline SVG as a cropped image and then saves the current browser view. Replace the URL and selector to match your page.

driver.quit()Remove the extra leading space before driver = webdriver.Chrome() when copying: it should align with try:. If your page contains multiple SVGs, make the selector more specific, for example main svg.chart. If you want the chart’s labels or surrounding legend as well, select its containing element instead.

The Selenium Python API documents save_screenshot(path) as a PNG screenshot method. get_screenshot_as_file(path) is another file option; it returns False if an I/O error occurs. See the Selenium Python WebDriver API.
Wait for charts that render asynchronously
A page’s load event does not guarantee that an application has finished drawing a chart. Selenium’s navigation documentation says that get() waits for the page’s onload event, but JavaScript may insert or update an SVG afterward. Wait for an application-specific sign that the graphic is ready before locating or capturing it.

For example, if the chart becomes visible only after rendering, wait for visibility rather than relying on a fixed delay:

Java: save a browser screenshot
Selenium’s browser-window guide demonstrates taking a current-context screenshot with Java’s TakesScreenshot interface. A typical file-save pattern is:

Check the resulting image
Open the saved file and confirm that the output matches the scope you intended. For an SVG capture, check that the graphic is present, its edges are not clipped, and its dimensions are suitable for your use. If it is blank or unexpectedly sized, the available documentation does not establish one universal SVG-specific fix: the result can depend on the page, browser, and capture method.

- The SVG is missing or blank: It may not have rendered when the screenshot ran. Wait for a page-specific ready condition, then capture again.
- The wrong chart is captured: The selector may match the first SVG on the page. Use a more specific CSS selector or target the chart’s container.
- The chart is clipped: An element screenshot is cropped to the selected element. Select a larger container if labels or legends sit outside the SVG bounds.
- The screenshot omits content lower on the page: The normal current-context screenshot is not a guarantee of full-document capture. Check whether your browser and binding provide a full-page method; the documented Firefox Python methods are browser- and binding-specific.
- No image file appears: Check the output path and write permissions. With Python’s
get_screenshot_as_file(path), check the return value forFalse.
