It returns a Pillow/PIL image object representing the current desktop. Pass a filename to save the image immediately, or pass region=(left, top, width, height) to capture only a rectangle.

Install PyAutoGUI and its screenshot dependency
Install the Python package in the environment that will run your script:
python -m pip install pyautoguiPyAutoGUI’s screenshot documentation says Pillow is required. Its platform notes describe macOS using the operating-system screencapture command and Linux using scrot. The installation page also lists python3-tk and python3-dev among Linux packages. Those pages were indexed approximately five years ago, so treat the commands as the documentation’s guidance rather than a guarantee for every current distribution or desktop session.

On Debian- or Ubuntu-based Linux systems, the documented package pattern is:

Capture the entire desktop
A full-screen capture needs no arguments:

Capture only a region
Use the four-value tuple (left, top, width, height). The first two values locate the rectangle’s upper-left corner; they are not the coordinates of the lower-right corner.

pyautogui.screenshot("panel.png", region=(200, 120, 640, 480))If the rectangle extends outside the usable desktop, the result depends on the operating-system capture backend. Start with coordinates known to be visible and print the full image size to verify your coordinate system.
Find coordinates interactively
PyAutoGUI can report the current pointer position, which helps you map a rectangle:

image.save("selected-area.png")Use positive width and height. On multi-display desktops, coordinate origins and negative coordinates can vary by operating system and display arrangement; verify with a small test capture rather than assuming every monitor starts at (0, 0).

Timing, sequencing, and image handling
The screenshot reference gives an example of “roughly 100 milliseconds on a 1920 × 1080 screen” — PyAutoGUI documentation, publication year not stated (indexed crawl approximately five years ago). That is a documentation example, not a benchmark or promise; resolution, display server, compression, storage, and virtualization can change the time substantially.
If you are capturing a UI after an action, wait for the application to redraw instead of assuming an immediate frame:

Install into the interpreter running the script, then verify the interpreter and installer match:

Pillow or backend errors
Install or upgrade Pillow in the same environment:
python -m pip install --upgrade pillowOn Linux, check that the documented scrot package is installed. Package names and capture support differ across distributions and display servers.
Black, blank, or incomplete images
- Confirm that the desktop session is active and unlocked; a headless process may have no drawable desktop.
- Test a small region and print
image.sizeto distinguish a coordinate error from a backend failure. - On macOS, review the terminal or Python application’s Screen Recording permission in System Settings and restart the application after changing it.
- On Linux, determine whether the session uses X11 or Wayland. The documented
scrot-based path may not work identically under every compositor; use the capture method supported by that environment. - In a remote desktop or virtual machine, check its graphics and privacy settings.
The wrong area was captured
Remember that region is origin plus size, not two corners. Confirm scaling settings and monitor coordinates, then capture a test image with visible pointer movement or a distinctive window.
The file cannot be opened or overwritten
Check that the parent directory exists and that the process has write permission. Use Path.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True) and a unique filename for repeated jobs.
When PyAutoGUI is the right tool
PyAutoGUI captures the pixels available to a local graphical session. It is appropriate for desktop automation, documenting an application’s visible state, and taking a bounded screen region. It is not a substitute for a browser-rendering service when you need a URL captured on a server without a desktop, a clean page without overlays, or a PDF generated from a web page.

Security and privacy checklist
- Do not save screenshots containing passwords, tokens, private messages, or personal records to a shared directory.
- Restrict permissions on capture folders and remove old files according to your retention policy.
- When automating clicks, ensure the script cannot accidentally interact with a destructive control.
- For URL captures, send only the headers and cookies required by the target and review the destination before sharing a signed link.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PyAutoGUI capture a browser page as HTML?
No. It captures pixels from the visible desktop and returns a Pillow image. Use a browser or URL screenshot service when you need a server-side page render.
Can I capture just one application window by name?
The documented screenshot call accepts a full screen or rectangular region. Locate the window’s coordinates with your desktop tools, then pass those coordinates as a region.
Why does my screenshot size differ from my monitor’s advertised resolution?
Operating-system scaling, virtual desktops, remote sessions, and multi-monitor coordinate systems can change the pixel dimensions exposed to the capture backend. Print image.size and test the actual session.
