Use Firefox’s headless WebDriver, navigate to the page, wait until its useful content is rendered, then call save_screenshot(). That method writes the current viewport as a PNG. For the entire document, Firefox’s Selenium driver provides save_full_page_screenshot(). If you need image data in your Python process instead of a file, use get_screenshot_as_png() or get_screenshot_as_base64().
Prerequisites and installation
Install Firefox, Python 3, and Selenium. The Selenium package must be able to start a compatible Firefox WebDriver (Selenium Manager can usually obtain the driver automatically in current Selenium releases).

Capture the current Firefox viewport
save_screenshot(path) captures what is visible in the current browser window and writes a PNG file. Give it an absolute path ending in .png, create the destination directory first, and check its Boolean result.

Capture the entire page in Firefox
Firefox exposes a full-document method that includes content below the viewport. It still writes a PNG and still requires a full path.

Make the captured state reproducible
Wait for meaningful content
A screenshot records the rendering state at the instant the command runs. A successful driver.get() does not guarantee that client-side content, images, or fonts have finished. Use an explicit wait for a page-specific element instead of relying on an arbitrary long sleep.

)Choose a selector that represents usable content on your site. For pages that load additional content after the first render, wait for that content or for a known loading indicator to disappear before capturing.
Control the viewport
Call set_window_size(width, height) (or set_window_rect) before navigation when exact viewport dimensions matter. A full-page capture still uses the page’s document dimensions, while a normal capture is limited to this window.

Keep browser lifetime bounded
Use a navigation timeout appropriate to your pages and always call quit(). For batch jobs, reuse one driver for several URLs when isolation is not required; starting a new Firefox process for every image adds startup cost.
Why Selenium returns False when saving
The file-oriented screenshot methods return False on an I/O error rather than silently claiming success. Typical causes and fixes are:
- Directory does not exist: create it with
Path(path).parent.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True). - Relative or malformed path: pass a full, absolute path and use the
.pngextension required by the Firefox methods. - No write permission: select a directory writable by the account running the process; containerized jobs often need a mounted writable directory.
- Path points to a directory: provide a filename, not only a folder.
- Storage is full: check available disk space and clean old captures.
- Browser process ended early: inspect the preceding navigation or WebDriver exception and ensure the driver remains alive until the save call completes.
Do not ignore the Boolean result. Raise an exception or otherwise mark the job failed so a missing image cannot be mistaken for a valid capture.
Troubleshoot blank, partial, or unexpected images
The image is blank or shows a loading shell
Capture later: wait for a meaningful selector, dismiss an application’s own loading state when appropriate, and verify that the URL is reachable from the machine running Firefox. A headless browser still receives the same network failures, authentication requirements, and bot challenges as a normal browser.

Only the top portion appears
Use save_full_page_screenshot() instead of save_screenshot(). If the site uses an internal scroll container, a full-document capture may not include content hidden inside that container; scroll or capture the element according to the application’s layout.
Images or lazy content are missing
Wait for the relevant elements, scroll through lazy-loaded sections when necessary, and capture only after their source images have loaded. The screenshot API does not retroactively wait for resources.
Results differ between runs
Fix the window size, use a consistent Firefox version and viewport, wait on deterministic selectors, and control data that changes between requests. Animations, rotating banners, current timestamps, and personalized content can legitimately change pixels.
Full-page capture is unavailable
Confirm that the session is Firefox and that your Selenium version includes the Firefox full-page method. The ordinary WebDriver screenshot method is portable, but full-document capture is a Firefox capability.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Startup: Firefox startup is usually more expensive than taking another image with an already-running driver, so reuse a session for trusted batches.
- Memory: full-page PNGs can be large for long documents. Write or stream bytes promptly and avoid retaining many images in memory.
- Determinism: fixed dimensions and explicit waits improve visual-test repeatability more than simply increasing a global sleep.
- Failure handling: record the URL, exception, and output path; retry navigation failures separately from file-system failures.
- Security: treat captured pages and custom headers or cookies as sensitive. Do not log credentials or publish screenshots containing private data.
