In Power Automate for desktop, use Take screenshot of web page for a browser page and Take screenshot of UI element for a control in a Windows desktop application. Each action can capture the entire target or one element, then save the result to the clipboard or to an image file. File mode requires a complete, writable image path.

The procedure below covers full pages, individual web controls, Windows UI elements, formats, browser-focus rules, failure recovery, and an API alternative when you do not want to maintain a visible browser session.

What you need before creating the flow

  • Power Automate for desktop installed and a desktop flow created.
  • For a webpage capture, a supported browser instance: Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Internet Explorer. You can launch a new instance from the flow or attach to one that is already open.
  • For a single webpage control, the control captured as a web UI element in the UI-elements pane (or during setup of the screenshot action).
  • For a Windows application control, the control captured as a desktop UI element.
  • A destination folder that exists and is writable if you choose File mode. Use a full path such as C:UsersYourNamePicturesPowerAutomatehome.png, replacing the user name and folder with a real location.

Browser automation actions and UI automation actions use different element types. A web UI element belongs with browser actions; a desktop UI element belongs with Windows UI automation. Mixing them is a common reason for an element-not-found error.

Take a screenshot of an entire webpage

  1. Create a desktop flow. Open Power Automate for desktop and choose New flow.
  2. Launch or attach to the browser. Add Launch new Microsoft Edge, Launch new Chrome, or Launch new Firefox (Internet Explorer is also listed as a supported launch option), or use the action that attaches to an existing supported browser. Store the browser instance produced by the action so later browser actions use the same instance.
  3. Navigate to the page. Add the browser navigation action and provide the target URL. If the page renders asynchronously, add a wait for the page or a distinctive element before taking the screenshot. A screenshot action captures what is currently displayed, so starting it before the page has finished rendering can produce an incomplete image.
  4. Add the screenshot action. In the actions list, find Take screenshot of web page and add it after navigation and any required waits.
  5. Select the capture scope. Set Capture to Entire web page. This is the full-page option rather than a single control.
  6. Choose where the image goes. Set Save mode to File and enter a complete path in Image file, or choose Clipboard when another step will paste or process the image immediately.
  7. Select a format. Choose the format required by the next system: BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, or WMF.
  8. Run and verify. Run the flow, then confirm that the file exists at the exact path or that the clipboard contains an image. Keep the browser instance and screenshot action in the same flow run unless you deliberately reattach.

Microsoft describes this action as taking a screenshot of the webpage (or an element of the webpage) currently displayed in the browser and saving the image to a file or the clipboard.

Capture one element on a webpage

Use the same Take screenshot of web page action, but first give it a captured web UI element.

  1. Launch or attach to the browser and navigate to the page.
  2. Open the UI-elements pane and capture the target control, such as a product card, chart, table, or form. Follow the capture prompt while the target is visible in the browser.
  3. Add Take screenshot of web page.
  4. Set Capture to Specific element.
  5. In the element field, select the web UI element you captured. Do not select a desktop UI element here.
  6. Choose Clipboard or File. For File mode, provide the full image path and one of the documented formats.
  7. Run the flow and check the result. If the page changes its structure or selector, recapture the element before changing unrelated steps.

A specific-element capture is useful when a full page contains navigation, cookie notices, or unrelated content that should not be included. It is also less dependent on the final scroll position because the target is identified as a web element rather than by coordinates.

Capture a control in a Windows desktop application

For a control in a native Windows application, use Take screenshot of UI element, not the webpage action.

  1. Open or attach to the Windows application that contains the target.
  2. Capture the control as a desktop UI element with the UI-elements pane.
  3. Add Take screenshot of UI element to the flow.
  4. Select the captured desktop UI element.
  5. Set Save mode to Clipboard or File. In File mode, enter a complete writable path in Image file and choose the image format.
  6. Run the flow and verify the clipboard or destination file.

Microsoft defines this action as taking a screenshot of a UI element in a window. It is intended for desktop application controls rather than content rendered inside a browser page.

Webpage and Windows UI actions compared

Need Action Target you provide Output
Whole webpage Take screenshot of web page Entire web page Clipboard or image file
One webpage control Take screenshot of web page Specific element plus a captured web UI element Clipboard or image file
One Windows application control Take screenshot of UI element Captured desktop UI element Clipboard or image file

Clipboard or file: which save mode should you use?

Clipboard

Choose Clipboard when the next action will paste the image into a document, send it through another desktop action, or inspect it immediately. There is no path to maintain, but the image depends on the clipboard remaining available and not being overwritten by another step or application.

File

Choose File when the screenshot must survive the flow run, be uploaded later, or be handed to another process. The Image file field must contain a full path, the parent folder must already exist, and the running account must have write permission. A relative path or a path to a missing folder can cause the save step to fail.

Documented image formats

Formats available in the screenshot actions Typical reason to select one
BMP Uncompressed image exchange with older Windows tools.
EMF or WMF Windows metafile workflows.
EXIF Workflows that specifically require EXIF image output.
GIF Simple indexed-color graphics.
JPG Smaller photographic files where lossy compression is acceptable.
PNG Lossless screenshots, text, and interface graphics.
TIFF Workflows that require TIFF images.

The format list is the same choice you make in the action configuration; it does not change the capture scope.

Browser visibility, focus, and timing rules

Power Automate can normally run browser automation while the browser is minimized. That does not apply to steps that use physical interaction. If a flow or one of its actions physically moves the mouse, sends keystrokes, or otherwise relies on what is visibly rendered, keep the browser visible and focus the target tab before the screenshot step.

  • Put navigation and page-state waits before the screenshot. A fixed delay can help when load time is predictable; waiting for a meaningful element is safer when it is not.
  • Do not minimize or switch away from a browser tab used by physical-interaction actions.
  • Capture web elements after the page reaches the state in which they will be used. A selector captured from one layout may no longer match after a responsive breakpoint, login state, or page redesign.
  • Use unique, stable elements for specific-element screenshots. A selector that matches several controls can identify the wrong one or fail when the page changes.
  • Keep file names deterministic when a later step expects a particular path, and use a new name or an explicit overwrite policy when repeated runs must preserve earlier screenshots.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom or exception Likely cause Fix
Element not found, CSS selector not found, or failure to retrieve the UI element The captured element no longer matches the page or application, the wrong element type was supplied, or the target is not currently present. Open the target state, recapture the web or desktop UI element, confirm that the screenshot action references the new element, and place an appropriate wait before the action.
Failed to take screenshot The browser instance is invalid, the page is still changing, the target element is unavailable, or the wrong screenshot action was chosen. Confirm that the flow launched or attached to the intended browser, navigate again if necessary, wait for the target state, and retry. For a Windows control, use the UI-element action; for a webpage, use the web-page action.
Image file cannot be saved The path is incomplete, the parent directory does not exist, permissions deny writing, or another process has locked the destination. Enter an absolute path, create the folder first, test write access with the same Windows account that runs the flow, and choose a new file name if the destination is locked.
Clipboard output is empty or belongs to another step The clipboard was unavailable or overwritten before it was consumed. Use Clipboard mode only when the next step reads it immediately; otherwise switch to File mode and verify the saved path.
Screenshot is blank or incomplete The page had not finished rendering, lazy content had not appeared, or a physical-interaction step acted on an unfocused or minimized browser. Wait for a reliable page element, keep the browser visible and focused when physical interaction is involved, and capture again after the target content is present.

Reliability and maintenance checklist

  • Keep browser launch or attach, navigation, waits, element capture, screenshot, and verification in an explicit order.
  • Separate full-page and element captures into separate actions so a later change to one target does not silently change the other.
  • Use a test URL and a writable test folder while building the flow, then switch to the production destination after a successful run.
  • Log or display the final image path when a downstream process depends on the file. This makes path and permission errors visible instead of appearing as a missing attachment later.
  • When a site redesign breaks a flow, recapture the affected web UI element and retest the page-state wait; do not assume that changing the screenshot format will repair a selector problem.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a repeatable URL-to-image or URL-to-PDF request rather than desktop automation, ScreenshotNeo is the first API alternative to try: it removes consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan listed here.

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API can capture a full page or a CSS-selected element and also supports options such as dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture, and a usage API. Every response identifies the page result and billing result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameter details. These complete examples request a screenshot of Stripe; replace only the URL when adapting them.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' }); const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools, so Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client can request captures without you wiring browser-launch and selector steps into every flow. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots, and every feature is included on every plan. Sign up for the free plan to try the API without adding a card.
