With Selenium WebDriver, open the college page and call driver.save_screenshot("college-page.png") to save a PNG of the current browser window. To capture only one item, such as a heading or notice, locate it and call its screenshot() method. Neither method should be treated as a universal full-page capture.
Capture a college webpage with Selenium and Python
This example uses headless Chrome and saves the current window as a PNG. Replace the example address with the public page URL you need to capture; the URL shown is illustrative and has not been tested against an Indian college website.

Capture just one element
Use an element screenshot when you need a specific component rather than the whole visible browser window. The selector below is illustrative; inspect the target page and choose a selector that matches its actual markup.

Choose capture scope and browser mode
- Current window:
driver.save_screenshot(path)captures the browser’s current window. It is a practical choice for a consistent viewport image. - One element: Call
element.screenshot(path)after locating the component you want to document. - Visible Chrome: Run without headless mode while developing or diagnosing layout and selector issues.
- Headless Chrome: Use
--headless=newfor an unattended run. Selenium’s Chrome guidance documents this option. - Consistent dimensions: Set a deliberate window size, such as
--window-size=1440,1000, so captures use a predictable viewport. This does not make the screenshot a full-document capture.
The reviewed Selenium Python API documents the current-window screenshot method, not a driver-independent, universal full-page screenshot method. If the page extends below the viewport, this call alone should not be described as capturing the entire document.

- Use the intended page URL. Pass the complete public URL, including the correct path, and verify that it loads in a normal browser before automating it.
- Wait for a meaningful page state. Use an explicit, page-specific condition for content rendered asynchronously. A fixed sleep may be too short on a slow page and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
- Fix the viewport. Set a window size that suits the page and the output you need. Different dimensions can change responsive layout, line wrapping, and which content is visible.
- Keep the driver versions compatible. Selenium’s Chrome documentation says the Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions must match. Check this if Chrome fails to start or a session cannot be created.
- Use a writable destination and clean up. Create the output directory before capture, check the save result, and put
driver.quit()in afinallyblock so the browser is closed even if navigation or capture raises an error.
Troubleshoot common failures

Check access, privacy, and reuse before capturing
A publicly reachable page is not automatically permission to automate access, collect visible personal information, or republish its contents. Check the particular college’s terms, privacy notice, and copyright policy, and consider separately whether the page may be accessed by your script, whether the image contains personal data, and whether you may share or reuse the image.

Do not treat robots.txt as authorization. The IETF’s RFC 9309 states: “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” It describes a crawler convention, not whether a particular site’s terms or other requirements permit your activity. IETF RFC 9309.

The Python WebDriver method described here saves PNG screenshots; the documented usage expects a filename ending in .png.
Does robots.txt tell me whether I may take a screenshot?
