Use Selenium’s driver.save_screenshot(path) to save the current browser window as a PNG, or use an element’s screenshot(path) method when a particular on-screen component is the record you need. These methods capture what is visible in the current browser context; the cited Selenium documentation does not establish that they capture an entire page beyond the viewport.
Capture a GST Portal browser view with Selenium
The following Python example creates a records folder, saves the current browser view, checks Selenium’s result, and closes the browser even if saving fails. It assumes you have already navigated to the page you are authorized to document.

Capture a specific element instead
When the record concerns a discrete component, locate the relevant element and call its screenshot method:

Keep enough surrounding context in the image for a reviewer to identify what the component represents; a narrowly cropped element may omit the page, period, or status needed to interpret it.
Navigate to the return page and wait for the relevant content
The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 manual describes this route: log in at www.gst.gov.in, open Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard, select the financial year, quarter, and month, then open the GSTR-1 tile. Follow the portal’s current on-screen workflow for the page you need; this documented route is specific to GSTR-1.

Capture only after the relevant content is visibly loaded. The official portal guide does not prescribe Selenium wait conditions, so choose a condition tied to the page and content rather than assuming one fixed sleep works for every session. Selenium automation against the live portal is not established or endorsed by the cited portal instructions.
Make the screenshot useful as a record
- Choose the capture scope. Use a current-window screenshot when surrounding page context matters; use an element screenshot for a discrete component without cropping away identifying context.
- Use a deliberate window size. Set the browser dimensions consistently if you need comparable captures. Selenium’s documented method saves the current window, not a guaranteed full-page image of content outside the viewport.
- Name and store the file carefully. Include a business purpose or period if useful, but avoid putting credentials or unnecessary personal or tax data in filenames. Save images in an access-controlled location and apply your organization’s retention policy; the cited sources do not set a GST-specific screenshot retention period.
- Review the saved image. Confirm that the page and period are correct and readable, and check for exposed credentials, personal information, or unrelated taxpayer data.
- Keep related official records together. Preserve relevant portal downloads and filing references alongside the image when available. A screenshot documents what appeared on screen; it does not by itself establish that a return was filed or that the image is legally sufficient evidence.
Use official downloads and filing references where available
A screenshot can complement, but should not be treated as a substitute for, portal-generated records. GST guidance documents Excel downloads for e-invoice details in relevant GSTR-1 workflows, and the GSTR-1 FAQ says the download-history area displays the last five downloaded files. The GSTR-3B guide describes downloading a filed return PDF. Available options depend on the form and workflow.

The GSTR-1 FAQ also says a successful filing generates an Application Reference Number (ARN), with SMS and email notifications sent to the primary authorised signatory. It describes electronic signing through DSC or EVC. Keep the applicable ARN and official files with the corresponding record when available; an image alone does not replace them.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
No screenshot file or a false return value
Check that the output directory exists and is writable, that the browser session is still active, and that the path is valid. The example creates its output folder and checks the boolean returned by save_screenshot; treat a false result as a failed save rather than assuming a usable record was created.

The screenshot shows a loading or incomplete page
The capture may have run before the relevant content appeared. Wait for a page-specific visible condition, then inspect the image before storing it as a record. A fixed delay alone may not suit every load.
Important content is missing below the visible area
The documented call captures the current window, and the sources cited here do not establish full-page scrolling capture. Adjust the browser view and capture the necessary visible sections, or use an applicable official download for structured information.

The image is difficult to interpret
Use a consistent browser size, make sure the relevant page title, period, or status remains visible, and avoid element-only capture if surrounding context is needed. Review legibility and privacy before sharing or archiving.
Authentication or portal behavior prevents navigation
Do not assume Selenium’s screenshot API handles GST authentication or overrides portal controls. Use an authorized workflow, do not place credentials or OTPs in source code or logs, and follow applicable portal and organizational requirements. The cited documentation does not establish permission to automate GST Portal access.
