Gemini CLI can inspect an existing screenshot and coordinate a browser workflow to capture a newly rendered HTML/CSS page—but it does not render web pages itself. To review a design, either pass an image file to Gemini CLI with @path, or start your project’s development server and capture its local URL using Gemini CLI’s browser agent or a configured Playwright MCP workflow.
Choose the right workflow: inspect an image or capture a page
These are separate jobs:
- Inspect an existing screenshot: Give Gemini CLI the local image path and ask for a visual review. This does not open or render the page; it analyzes the image you already have.
- Capture your HTML/CSS: Run the project in a browser, then use browser automation to capture the rendered result. The browser performs the rendering; Gemini CLI can coordinate the work through its tools.
Gemini CLI documents @-prefixed file and directory references as a way to include content in a prompt. Its tools reference says the read_file tool supports text, images, audio, and PDF files. Availability and image handling can depend on the installed release and active tools, so ask Gemini CLI to report a limitation rather than assuming every setup can inspect every image format. How to make Gemini CLI look at an existing screenshot
- Open Gemini CLI from your project directory. This gives it project context if you want recommendations tied to the code.
- Reference the screenshot in your prompt. For example:
Review @screenshots/current-page.png for visual layout issues. Describe what is visibly wrong and suggest changes to the relevant HTML/CSS files. - Ask for observations before edits. Request specific, visible issues—such as spacing, alignment, contrast, or clipping—and ask which files and selectors are relevant. This helps distinguish what the image shows from what the CLI infers about your source.
- Review any proposed change. If you ask Gemini CLI to modify files, inspect its proposed diff before approving it.
If the CLI cannot read the image, check that the path is correct and that the active tools support that file. You can also use a browser-capture workflow below to produce a fresh screenshot, then try passing that saved image to the CLI.
How to render and capture your HTML/CSS project
Use the project’s own development instructions rather than assuming a universal server command. The command differs between projects and frameworks; the Gemini CLI documentation does not prescribe one for all local sites.

- Inspect project guidance and scripts. Ask Gemini CLI to identify the relevant setup instructions and available development-server command. Check the repository’s own README and package scripts where applicable.
- Start the development server. Run the documented command and note the local URL it reports. Gemini CLI’s shell shorthand uses
!followed by a command for manual execution. Shell commands and file changes are mediated by security controls; inspect the exact command or diff before approving it. Details are in the tools reference. - Open the local URL in browser automation. Use Gemini CLI’s documented browser agent if your environment meets its requirements, or configure Playwright MCP as a separate workflow.
- Capture the relevant view. Choose a viewport, a specific element, or the full page according to what you need to review.
- Ask for visual feedback and iterate. Compare the result at the intended viewport size, make a focused change, and capture again. Use an accessibility snapshot when you need to inspect page structure, text, or identify interactive elements; use the screenshot to judge visual appearance.
Gemini CLI browser-agent prerequisites
The current Gemini CLI browser-agent documentation lists Chrome version 144 or later as a prerequisite. It describes the underlying chrome-devtools-mcp server as bundled with Gemini CLI and launched automatically. In a container sandbox, Chrome is unavailable inside the container; the agent is disabled unless configured to use an existing host Chrome session. Browser-agent behavior therefore depends on the environment, not just the prompt. Consult the Gemini CLI browser-agent documentation for current setup details.
The documentation also describes screenshot analysis as an optional visual-agent feature. It requires API key or Vertex AI authentication and is unavailable when signed in with “Sign in with Google.” This is distinct from asking Gemini CLI to read a local image through its file tools.
Check which tools your installation has
Names and availability can change between releases or configurations. Use /tools or /tools desc in Gemini CLI to inspect currently registered tools and their descriptions. If the browser agent is not available, a separately configured browser integration such as Playwright MCP is an alternative. Gemini CLI extensions can provide additional capabilities; see the extensions documentation.
Capture with Playwright MCP: viewport, element, or full page
Playwright MCP documents the browser_take_screenshot tool. Its options let you choose the capture area and output; this is a browser automation workflow, not a command that renders HTML without a browser.

For example, the documented full-page request is:
browser_take_screenshot { fullPage: true, filename: "homepage.png" }Playwright MCP documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. Without a filename, the screenshot is returned inline by default; with filename, it is saved to that path. The default format is PNG unless the filename extension determines another format.
Choose CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale
The scale option accepts css or device. CSS scale uses CSS-pixel dimensions; device scale uses device pixels and can produce a higher-resolution image according to the browser’s device-pixel ratio. Match the scale to your review goal: CSS scale is useful for ordinary layout checks, while device scale can help when inspecting high-resolution output.
Playwright advises using screenshots for visual appearance, including canvas or chart content. For understanding structure, reading text, or locating interactive elements, use accessibility snapshots instead. A screenshot is for looking at, not for acting on or reliably discovering page semantics. See Playwright’s screenshot tool reference.
Keep visual review reliable and safe
- Use the intended viewport. A layout can differ across viewport widths. Capture at the size relevant to the issue rather than judging a mobile design from a desktop-only image.
- Wait for the page to be ready. If fonts, images, or application data have not loaded, the screenshot may reflect an incomplete state. Confirm the page is usable before capturing.
- Separate visual checks from content and interaction checks. Screenshots show appearance; accessibility snapshots and browser tools are better suited to reading structure or locating controls.
- Review commands and changes. Gemini CLI’s security behavior requires manual confirmation for shell execution and file mutations. Inspect the command or diff before approving it.
- Do not bypass browser safeguards. The browser-agent documentation describes restrictions on dangerous URL schemes and safeguards for sensitive actions. Follow those controls.
- Account for sandboxing. Browser availability can differ between a host and a container. If Chrome is not available to the agent in the sandbox, use the documented host-session configuration or another permitted browser workflow.
Troubleshooting Gemini CLI screenshots and HTML/CSS previews
The screenshot path is not recognized
Check the spelling, working directory, and relative path. Use an absolute path if the file is outside the current project. Confirm the image format is supported by the active CLI tools; ask Gemini CLI to say whether it can inspect the file before requesting a detailed visual diagnosis.

Gemini CLI describes a page but does not show a rendered screenshot
That is expected if you only supplied HTML/CSS or asked a text-only question. Start the project’s development server and use a browser agent or Playwright MCP to open the URL and capture it. Gemini CLI is coordinating tools, not acting as a general HTML rendering engine.
The browser agent is missing or cannot launch Chrome
Check that Chrome 144 or later is installed where the agent can access it, and inspect /tools or /tools desc for registered tools. In a container, Chrome may not be available inside the sandbox; use the documented existing-host-session configuration or a separately configured browser automation tool.
Optional screenshot analysis is unavailable
If you are using the visual screenshot-analysis agent rather than local-image file input, verify that you are authenticated with an API key or Vertex AI. The documented visual-agent feature is not available with “Sign in with Google.”
The capture is incomplete or cuts off content
Check whether you chose the viewport or full-page capture. A viewport shows only the current view; full-page capture includes scrollable content and cannot be combined with an element target. Also verify that the page has finished loading before capturing.

A requested element is not captured
For Playwright MCP, provide a valid element reference or selector using target. Do not combine that target with fullPage: true; capture the element and full page in separate requests if you need both.
A shell command or edit appears blocked
Gemini CLI’s security controls mediate shell execution and file mutations. Review the displayed command or diff, then approve only if it is the action you intended. Do not disable safeguards to force a capture workflow.
