For useful broken-link evidence, capture the source page, the specific link, and the destination’s observed failure—and record both URLs and the observation time alongside the image. A screenshot documents what you saw; it does not, by itself, prove the failure is persistent or establish a site-wide broken-link problem.
What a useful broken-link screenshot needs to show
Make it possible for another person to connect the failure to the link you audited. When practical, capture the source page with the linked text or control identifiable, then show the destination URL and the actual error or failure. If both pages cannot fit in one image, save separate captures and connect them with an audit row or note.
Record this information with the capture:
- Source-page URL: the page containing the link.
- Destination URL: the address the link points to.
- Observation date and time.
- Browser or audit context used.
- What happened, such as a browser error or an HTTP response reported by a tool.
- A stable finding ID or filename associating the record with the screenshot.
These fields are practical audit documentation, not a formal Google checklist. Avoid cropping out the details needed to identify the source page, link, or observed result. If a long destination URL is not readable in the image, preserve the exact URL in the associated record.
Capture and verify the issue in a browser

Record the finding first
Create an audit row or note with the source URL, destination URL, timestamp, browser or tool context, and the failure observed. Assign a finding ID so the screenshot and notes stay together.

Confirm the link is present in page content
Google generally crawls links expressed as an
<a>element with anhref. For a link inserted by JavaScript, check URL Inspection to confirm it appears in rendered HTML. See Google Search Central’s SEO link best practices. -
Open the source page and follow the link
Reproduce the path a reader would take. Capture enough of the source page to identify the link, then open its destination and record the failure you actually observe. Do not label a link broken solely because a single check produced an ambiguous or temporary result.

Capture the identifying context
Include the destination address and the visible failure when practical. If the evidence spans multiple screens, keep the captures together under the finding ID and preserve both URLs in the audit record.

Recheck material findings
Repeat the check after a short interval or use another suitable diagnostic route when the issue might be intermittent. There is no Google-prescribed interval in the URL Inspection documentation; the reason to recheck is that server errors can be transient.

Use Search Console as complementary evidence
Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool can provide a screenshot of Google’s rendered view during a successful live test, along with diagnostic details such as response data, HTTP headers, raw HTML, console output, and loaded resources. The screenshot is available only for a successful live test—not for an indexed-URL view or an unsuccessful live fetch. See Google’s URL Inspection tool documentation.
This evidence answers a different question from your local browser capture: it shows Google’s live inspection of a URL rather than simply what appeared in your own browser. Google cautions that server errors may be transient and that a live test may differ from what happened during an earlier crawl. Preserve the result as a time-specific observation and verify important failures before presenting them as ongoing.

Keep the audit evidence reviewable
- Use a stable filename or finding ID, for example
SEO-042-source.pngandSEO-042-destination.png. - Keep the exact source and destination URLs, timestamp, and observed status or error in the matching audit record.
- Retain unaltered captures as the evidence copy. If you create an annotated or cropped version for discussion, keep the original too.
- Distinguish a browser message, an HTTP status reported by a diagnostic tool, and a Search Console result; they are observations from different contexts.
- Describe a failure as confirmed for the time and context tested unless repeat checks establish that it continues.
