Use Playwright to sign in through the website’s normal authentication flow, save the resulting browser state securely, and load it in a recurring browser job. Before saving each screenshot, verify that the run is still authenticated and that the intended page content has loaded. A saved login state can expire, and sites that rely on session storage, MFA, or custom SSO may need extra handling.
How the scheduled screenshot workflow works
A reliable job separates authentication, capture, and scheduling. You authenticate with an approved account, reuse browser state where the site permits it, confirm the protected page is actually available, and save the image to a destination with appropriate access controls.
- Confirm authorization. Use an account and access method approved by the site. Screenshot automation should not bypass access controls.
- Authenticate once. Complete the normal login flow in Playwright, either by automating the form or completing an approved interactive setup. Wait for a stable signed-in page before saving browser state.
- Protect the saved state. Treat it like a password: it can contain cookies or headers that allow account impersonation. Exclude it from version control and restrict access to the file and any runner that reads it. See Playwright’s authentication guidance.
- Schedule a browser run. Use cron, a CI workflow, or another scheduler to launch the script at the desired cadence. The GitHub Marketplace screenshot-action example demonstrates a cron-triggered workflow and an output directory; its behavior is an implementation example, not a guarantee about all runners or schedules.
- Verify, then capture. Navigate to the protected route using the saved state. Check a stable, site-specific indicator of authentication and expected content. If redirected to login, fail the job and refresh authentication through the site’s intended process rather than saving the login screen as the result.
- Choose what to capture. Playwright supports viewport, full-page, and element screenshots; its screenshot documentation describes saving images to files or returning image bytes.
- Decide where output goes. Private pages may include personal or customer information. Set retention and access deliberately, and do not publish artifacts or commit screenshots to a public repository unless that is authorized.
Reuse login state safely
Playwright’s storage-state mechanism can preserve authentication data in cookies, local storage, and IndexedDB, depending on the application and configuration. It does not automatically preserve session storage: session storage is domain-specific and does not persist across page loads, so applications that depend on it require separate save-and-load handling. The site’s authentication design determines which state is sufficient. See the authentication documentation and the project source documentation.
Playwright warns that “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” A practical safeguard is to store state in a directory such as playwright/.auth, add that directory to .gitignore, and keep it out of logs and broadly accessible CI artifacts. Limit runner and secret access, and refresh or rotate authentication as the site requires.

Sessions can expire or be revoked. MFA and SSO behavior is site-specific; an example community batch-screenshot project says its own saved state must be refreshed manually after expiry and its login flow does not support 2FA. Those are limitations of that example, not universal Playwright constraints. See the example project.
Choose the capture scope
- Viewport: captures what is visible in the browser window; useful for a compact recurring status image.
- Full page: captures the scrollable page, including content below the initial viewport. Pages that load images or other content lazily may need scrolling or readiness handling before capture.
- Element: captures a selected component, such as a chart or account summary, rather than the entire page.
For client-rendered charts or asynchronous content, wait for a meaningful selector or other page-specific readiness condition. A fixed delay can help only when you have a reason to use it; it is not proof that data is correct. Playwright’s page assertions can wait for successive screenshots to stabilize in visual comparisons, but that alone does not establish that all page data is accurate.

The schedule controls how often a run starts; it does not guarantee that the page will be ready, the session valid, or the runner available at an exact minute. Set the cadence according to how often the page changes and how much output you intend to retain.

Troubleshooting scheduled captures
- The screenshot shows a login screen: Authentication likely expired, was revoked, or was not restored correctly. Detect the login redirect or missing authenticated-page marker, fail the run, and renew state through the normal login process.
- The site appears signed in manually but not in the job: The saved state may omit the authentication mechanism the site uses. Check whether it depends on session storage, MFA, SSO, or another site-specific flow; implement the approved handling rather than assuming cookie state is enough.
- The capture is blank or incomplete: Confirm navigation completed and the expected content appeared. Add a selector-based readiness check for client-rendered or asynchronous components; use a short wait only when appropriate.
- A scheduled run does not produce a file: Check that the scheduler invoked the intended script, the runner has its browser dependencies and access to the state file, and the output path is writable. Keep logs useful without printing credentials or browser state.
- The output exposes private data: Restrict artifact and storage permissions, shorten retention, and remove public or unintended copies. Treat both the saved state and screenshots as potentially sensitive.
Reliability, privacy, and cost considerations
There is no established general reliability or performance percentage for scheduled authenticated screenshots in the cited sources. Reliability depends on the site’s login design, session lifetime, page readiness, runner availability, and output storage. Make the job’s success criteria explicit: navigation completed, authentication remained valid, the expected page marker appeared, and the screenshot was written to the intended private destination.
