To capture competitor landing pages on a repeating schedule, combine a browser capture script with a scheduler such as cron or a hosted workflow. The browser renders and saves each page; the scheduler starts the job at the intervals you choose. Keep the browser, viewport, and capture mode consistent so your archive is useful for visual comparisons.
Choose an archive or a change-alert workflow
First decide whether you need a dated image archive or alerts when a page changes. An archive stores screenshots for later review. A change-monitoring workflow also compares captures and decides which differences matter, then delivers an email or webhook notification. That comparison and delivery need extra logic in a self-managed setup, or a service that offers them.
- Self-managed: You control browser behavior, target URLs, files, and storage, but maintain the script, browser environment, retries, and archive.
- Managed capture: A hosted service may combine recurring runs, retained results, and notifications. Check its current quota, retention, export, notification, and plan terms before relying on those features. There is no need to buy a camera or capture device: these tools render pages in a browser. The cited sources do not establish a need to buy a computer, either; an existing machine or hosted workflow can run a self-managed job.
Set up scheduled captures with Playwright
This example uses Playwright Test to capture a landing page and compare it with a baseline. Install Node.js and Playwright in a project, create a test file, then run it locally once to establish the baseline. The recurring schedule belongs to your operating-system scheduler or hosted workflow, not to the screenshot command itself.

Playwright Test’s snapshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the last capture with the expected image. This is behavior of the test runner, not a guarantee that a page will be visually stable in every environment. See Playwright PageAssertions.
2. Schedule the recurring run
For a Linux or macOS machine with cron, open the crontab with crontab -e and add a line such as the following to run daily at 09:00 in the machine’s local time:

Use the absolute project path and ensure the scheduler’s account can access the project, installed browser, and output directory. Cron starts the test; it does not manage snapshot retention or send alerts. Keep a backup of the baseline and decide how long to retain test artifacts or logs.

If you prefer a hosted workflow, a community-maintained example is guibranco/github-screenshot-action. Its repository documents a URL list in JSON and a scheduled workflow using cron syntax, with options for output, concurrency, retries, timeouts, wait strategy, and viewport width. It is a community project, not an official GitHub feature or endorsement; check its current version and maintenance before adopting it.
Make screenshots comparable
Keep framing and capture mode fixed
Choose a viewport and stick to it. Also decide whether you need the visible viewport, a full-page capture, or a selected element. Playwright supports viewport, element, and full-page screenshots, with PNG, JPEG, and WebP output; see its screenshot documentation. A changed viewport or capture mode can create apparent differences unrelated to the page itself.
Keep the rendering environment stable
Use the same browser version, host, settings, and headless configuration for the baseline and subsequent runs when practical. Playwright notes that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.
Control when the capture happens
Pages may load content after the initial navigation, so select a wait condition that fits the page. The example uses networkidle; if a page continuously polls or loads third-party resources, that condition may take too long or never arrive. A deliberate wait for a page element or a short delay can be more appropriate, but a fixed delay may still capture too early or waste time. Use the same strategy across runs.

Turn visual differences into useful alerts
A Playwright baseline comparison can identify visual differences, but a monitoring workflow still needs a policy for what to do with them. Decide whether every changed snapshot should notify someone, or whether you will review a daily archive. For fewer noisy alerts, define what counts as meaningful, such as a changed headline or price area, and account for routine variations like rotating promotions, timestamps, and third-party content.
For each target, retain the capture time, URL, viewport, and browser context alongside the image. These details help distinguish a competitor’s page change from a change in your capture setup. A managed service may provide storage and email or webhook notifications, but verify its retention and notification terms directly rather than assuming they are included at a particular quota.
Troubleshoot scheduled captures
- The scheduled job runs but produces no screenshot: Check the scheduler log, working directory, file permissions, and whether the scheduler account can run Node.js and access the installed browser.
- The test times out at navigation: The page may be slow, unavailable, or continuously active. Review the wait condition and timeout; choose a page-specific readiness condition where possible.
- Every run reports visual changes: Confirm viewport, browser version, host, headless mode, and other settings match the baseline. Dynamic content can also change between captures.
- Images are cut off: Check whether the test is capturing the viewport or the full page, and keep that choice consistent. Full-page capture is the appropriate mode when the whole landing page is needed.
- No one receives a change alert: The example test compares snapshots but does not send email or webhooks. Add notification handling to your workflow or use a service whose current plan and documentation confirm that delivery option.
- A community workflow fails after setup: Check the repository’s current instructions, version, permissions, and maintenance status; the action is not an official GitHub feature.
