Set the news site’s language and region in a Playwright browser context before you navigate, then capture the viewport, full page, or a specific element. Locale, geolocation, and a site’s own edition selector are separate: configure the ones the site actually uses, and verify the rendered edition before treating the screenshot as correct.
Choose the edition and language tag
First decide which edition you need and identify its language-region tag, such as hi-IN for Hindi as used in India. Playwright’s context-level locale emulates browser locale. A news site may still choose its edition using a language menu, URL path, cookie, or account setting, so a locale setting alone does not prove that the intended edition loaded.
Use the site’s visible edition label, language-menu state, or a known article heading as a page-specific check. If a site requires an interaction to switch editions, do that after navigation and before capture.

Set up a repeatable Playwright capture
Install Playwright in your project if it is not already present, and use the version specified by that project. Replace the example URL and adapt the edition-selection and waiting logic to the target site.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const context = await browser.newContext({
locale: 'hi-IN',
viewport: { width: 1365, height: 900 },
// Set timezoneId only if relevant to the target site's behavior.
// Add geolocation and grant permission only if the site uses location.
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com/news', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Replace this check with a selector or other signal for the intended edition.
// await page.getByText('Hindi').waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'regional-news.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
Context settings apply to pages created in that context. Set locale and viewport before navigation so the site receives the intended browser settings on its initial request. The official Playwright emulation guide covers locale, timezone, geolocation, and device emulation; the codegen documentation shows a language setting alongside location and timezone options.
Add geolocation only when it matters
Locale and geolocation are independent controls. If the site selects a regional edition using physical location, provide coordinates and grant the browser context the geolocation permission before opening or interacting with the page. Do not infer that a site uses location just because Playwright can emulate it.
const context = await browser.newContext({
locale: 'hi-IN',
viewport: { width: 1365, height: 900 },
timezoneId: 'Asia/Kolkata',
geolocation: { latitude: 28.6139, longitude: 77.2090 },
permissions: ['geolocation'],
});
Use coordinates and a timezone that match the scenario you are testing. A timezone can affect date or time presentation, but it does not itself select a language edition.

Wait for the content the screenshot needs
domcontentloaded is a navigation milestone, not a guarantee that late content, web fonts, or lazy-loaded images are ready. Wait for a page-specific heading or edition indicator, and add site-appropriate waits for late content or fonts where necessary. There is no universal wait condition that confirms every news site has finished rendering.
Capture the viewport, full page, or an element
Choose the capture target based on what you need to inspect. Playwright documents screenshot options, including image format, clipping, buffers, and scale, in its screenshot documentation.
| Need | Playwright call | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| Visible viewport | await page.screenshot({ path: 'news.png' }) |
The currently visible page area. |
| Entire scrollable page | await page.screenshot({ path: 'news-full.png', fullPage: true }) |
A full-page image, including content beyond the viewport. |
| One component or story | await page.locator('selector').screenshot({ path: 'headline.png' }) |
The selected element; replace selector with a locator for the target. |
A full-page capture can include content that only appears as the page scrolls. If the site loads images or stories lazily, inspect the result and use site-specific scrolling or waits if needed before capture.

Keep comparison screenshots consistent
For visual regression work, record and keep the relevant browser inputs fixed between runs. A different locale, viewport, or image scale can change text wrapping and pixel dimensions even when the site itself has not changed.
- Locale: use the same language-region tag and edition-selection steps.
- Location and timezone: use the same geolocation and timezone assumptions when the site depends on them.
- Viewport: keep width and height fixed; declare a desktop or mobile target rather than relying on incidental defaults.
- Capture region: compare viewport captures with viewport captures, full-page with full-page, or the same element with the same locator.
- Scale: CSS-pixel scale is appropriate when comparing CSS layout dimensions. Device-pixel scale produces a higher-resolution image useful for legibility but changes output pixel dimensions. See Playwright’s screenshot assertion guidance for scale and repeatability options.
Playwright screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive screenshots to match and provide controls such as disabling animations and hiding the caret. Those controls can reduce visual noise; they do not verify that the website served the right language.
Inspect the result before using it
A successful screenshot call only means an image was captured; it is not evidence that the correct news edition loaded. Check the image itself and the page-specific signals you chose.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The site still shows the default language
Cause: The site may not use browser locale to choose its editorial edition. Fix: use its language selector, edition URL, cookie, or account preference, then wait for a visible edition-specific indicator before taking the screenshot.
The edition varies between runs
Cause: A locale, location, timezone, cookie, or account state differs between runs, or the site chooses an edition dynamically. Fix: set context values explicitly, use a consistent edition-selection path, and record the settings alongside the image. Add geolocation and its permission only if the site’s behavior depends on location.

Text or images are missing in the screenshot
Cause: The screenshot may have been taken before late content, fonts, or lazy-loaded images appeared. Fix: wait for a page-specific selector or other site-specific ready condition; for content below the fold, scroll as needed before using fullPage: true.

The image is blurry or has unexpected dimensions
Cause: The viewport or screenshot scale differs from the intended baseline. Fix: specify a fixed viewport and an explicit scale appropriate to the comparison. Device-pixel output is higher resolution but has different pixel dimensions from CSS-pixel output.
The screenshot changes despite matching page content
Cause: Animations, a blinking caret, or content settling can alter pixels between captures. Fix: use Playwright’s screenshot assertion options to disable animations or hide the caret, and rely on its consecutive-match behavior where appropriate. These measures stabilize rendering, not language selection.
