Take several screenshots with Snipping Tool
For multiple separate captures, Snipping Tool is the most flexible built-in option: you can select a different region or window for each snip, then save the results as files. Windows 10 and Windows 11 are both covered by Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool guidance, but the precise interface and automatic-save behavior can vary with the installed app and its settings.
- Arrange the first window or on-screen content you want to capture.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen snipping overlay opens.
- Choose a mode: rectangle, freeform, window, or full screen. For rectangle or freeform, drag around the content; for window or full screen, select as prompted.
- Open the capture notification to view the snip in Snipping Tool. It is copied to the clipboard as well.
- Save the capture with Ctrl + S or the Save button. Choose a file name and location if prompted.
- Arrange the next target and press Alt + N in Snipping Tool to start another snip in the same mode. Repeat for each capture.
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance says a capture is copied to the Snipping Tool window, where it can be changed, saved, or shared. This is useful because you can review each image before saving rather than relying only on a clipboard copy.
Choose the right capture mode
- Rectangular snip: Drag a box around a particular area, such as a dialog or part of a web page.
- Freeform snip: Draw an irregular outline when a rectangle would include too much background.
- Window snip: Capture a specific window rather than the entire desktop. Select the intended window when prompted.
- Full-screen snip: Capture everything displayed on the screen.
Snipping Tool also offers an optional capture delay of 1–5 seconds. Use a delay when you need time to open a menu or show another transient screen element before the capture.

Capture just the active window or the whole screen
If you only need one quick capture and do not need to choose a region, the keyboard shortcuts can be faster. These shortcuts initially put an image on the clipboard, not necessarily into a named file.

Use Alt + Print Screen for one window
- Click the window you want so it is active.
- Press Alt + Print Screen.
- Open an app that accepts images, such as a document or graphics editor, and press Ctrl + V.
- Use that app’s save option if you need an image file.
Use Print Screen for the desktop
Press Print Screen, then paste with Ctrl + V into an application. Since this is a clipboard-first method, it does not by itself tell you that a file has been saved. Paste the capture somewhere and save it, or use Snipping Tool when you want a deliberate save workflow.
Where Windows 10 screenshots are saved
There are two different destinations to keep straight: the clipboard, which lets you paste a capture, and a folder, which holds an image file. A clipboard image is not proof that a named file exists on disk.

- Snipping Tool: Microsoft’s current guidance says snips are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder, and that automatic saving and the default folder can be changed in Snipping Tool Settings. Check the installed app’s Settings if you do not see an expected file; app behavior can differ by version or configuration.
- Windows logo key + PrtScn: Microsoft’s shortcut guidance identifies Pictures > Screenshots as the folder to check, when the shortcut is supported by the device.
- Print Screen or Alt + Print Screen: The documented result is the clipboard. Paste the image into an application and save it to create a file.
To keep a series organized, save each capture with a descriptive name and place them in the same folder. If Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting is on, confirm the destination in Settings rather than assuming every installation uses the same folder.

The main choice is whether you need a selected capture with a review-and-save step, or a fast clipboard image of the active window or whole screen.

If your keyboard has no Print Screen key
You can still use Windows logo key + Shift + S to open screen snipping. Microsoft also documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an option on devices without a PrtScn button. The exact keyboard behavior can depend on the device, so if that combination does not work, use the screen-snipping shortcut or check the device’s keyboard guidance.

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected screenshots
The screenshot is not in the folder you expected
First determine whether you used a clipboard shortcut or a file-saving workflow. With Print Screen and Alt + Print Screen, paste the capture into an application and save it. For Snipping Tool, check its Settings for automatic saving and the default folder; Microsoft’s current guidance says both can be changed.
Alt + Print Screen captures the wrong thing
That shortcut captures the active window. Click the intended window first, then press the keys again. If you need a precise region instead, use Windows logo key + Shift + S and select the rectangular mode.
Windows logo key + PrtScn does not work
That shortcut depends on hardware support and keyboard layout. Try Snipping Tool’s screen-snipping shortcut. If the device has no Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative to try.

The capture missed a menu or temporary control
Start a Snipping Tool capture with a 1–5 second delay, then open the menu or control during the countdown. This is more reliable for capturing content that disappears when you click elsewhere to start a snip.
You have a clipboard capture but need a file
Paste it with Ctrl + V into an app that accepts images, then use that app’s save function. For repeat captures, use Snipping Tool’s Ctrl + S or Save button so each snip can be saved with a file name and location.
