For a sharper website screenshot, increase its output pixel density; to include content below the visible screen, enable full-page capture. Those are separate settings: higher resolution adds detail, while full-page capture adds page length. Set the intended desktop or mobile viewport first, then choose the capture scale that suits how the image will be viewed.
What “high resolution” means for a website screenshot
A page is laid out in CSS pixels, while the screenshot file contains image pixels. Device pixel ratio (DPR) describes the relationship between physical screen pixels and logical CSS pixels. Chrome defines it as “the ratio between physical pixels on the hardware screen and logical (CSS) pixels.” Chrome DevTools Device Mode lets you select a DPR; in scripted captures, a device-scale option can produce multiple image pixels for each CSS pixel.
More output pixels can make fine details easier to inspect when an image is enlarged, but also increase image dimensions and file size. Full-page capture solves a different problem: it captures content beyond the current viewport. A long image is not necessarily a higher-resolution image, and a high-density viewport capture does not automatically include the whole page.
Choose the capture method and settings
| Need | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One quick capture in Chrome | Chrome DevTools Device Mode | It provides device pixel ratio controls and a full-size screenshot command. |
| Repeat captures or specific viewports | Playwright | Its API exposes viewport size, full-page capture, and CSS-pixel or device-pixel output scale. |
| Capture in Firefox or select an element | Firefox Developer Tools | Firefox documents page and element screenshots, as well as a console helper with DPR and delay options. |
| Include content below the viewport | Full-page capture | This controls how much of the document is captured, independently of pixel density. |
| Keep the image smaller | CSS-pixel scale | It outputs one image pixel per CSS pixel rather than device-scaled output. |
For responsive pages, decide on the target width and height before capture. A page may rearrange its layout when the viewport changes; a mobile-width capture and a desktop-width capture are different page states, not merely different crops. Playwright recommends setting the viewport before navigation where page behavior may depend on size. See its screenshot API documentation.

Take a high-resolution screenshot in Chrome DevTools
- Open the website in Chrome and open DevTools. Select Toggle device toolbar to enter Device Mode.
- Choose a device or set the viewport dimensions to the layout you need. In Device Mode options, add or select the desired device pixel ratio. The exact available choices depend on the controls shown in your Chrome version.
- Open the DevTools screenshot menu. Choose Capture full size screenshot to include the page below the viewport. For only the currently visible area, choose the viewport screenshot command instead.
- Open the saved image and check its dimensions and legibility. If details still look too small, increase the DPR or choose a larger viewport where appropriate; if the page is too long, change full-page capture rather than DPR.
Chrome documents these controls in its Device Mode guide. A device preset can also affect viewport dimensions, so verify that the resulting layout matches the intended desktop or mobile view.

npm install -D playwright
npx playwright install chromium
Save this as screenshot.mjs. It captures a full page at a 1440 by 1000 CSS-pixel viewport, with output scaled to device pixels. Change the target URL and dimensions as needed.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 },
deviceScaleFactor: 2,
});
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'website.png',
fullPage: true,
scale: 'device',
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Run it with node screenshot.mjs. The viewport is in CSS pixels; with a device scale factor of 2 and device-scale output, the image is approximately twice as wide and twice as tall as a CSS-scale image for the same viewport area. Full-page height depends on the page’s scrollable content, so the complete output can be much larger than the viewport. Playwright documents fullPage and scale in the Page screenshot API.

Adjust viewport, scale, and extent independently
- For a sharper image: use
scale: 'device'and set a device scale factor above 1. More pixels mean a larger file and potentially more memory use. - For one pixel per CSS pixel: use
scale: 'css'. This is often sufficient for documentation viewed at ordinary size. - For a specific responsive layout: set
viewportbeforepage.goto(). Choose dimensions based on the actual target, not an arbitrary device label. - For the entire document: set
fullPage: true. For the current viewport only, set it tofalseor omit it.
A full-page, high-DPR image can become very tall and heavy. If the output is unwieldy, capture at CSS scale or capture only the viewport. If the screenshot must document a mobile layout, use a mobile-sized viewport rather than relying only on DPR.
Use Firefox Developer Tools
Firefox’s screenshot tool can capture the page or an individual element. Mozilla also documents the Web Console :screenshot helper, which supports options including device pixel ratio, a capture delay, and a filename. Consult the Firefox screenshot helper documentation for the current syntax and options, since command details may vary by Firefox version.

Use an element capture when the deliverable is a component rather than the whole page. For a full document or a particular responsive width, confirm that the selected tool’s capture mode and viewport match the intended result.

Troubleshoot blurry, incomplete, or failed captures
The screenshot looks blurry when enlarged
- Check whether the capture was made at CSS scale. Switch to device-pixel output and increase the device scale factor if more pixel detail is needed.
- Confirm that the source page itself renders sharp text and images at the chosen viewport. Higher output scale cannot restore detail missing from a low-resolution source image.
- Verify the saved image’s actual pixel dimensions. A file’s dimensions, not its display size in an image viewer, determine how many pixels are available.
The bottom of the page is missing
- Use the full-page option: Chrome’s full-size screenshot command, Playwright’s
fullPage: true, or Firefox’s page capture option. - Do not increase DPR as a substitute for full-page capture. DPR adds pixels within the capture; it does not extend the captured document.
The page has the wrong layout
- Set the desired viewport before navigation, particularly in Playwright, and recapture.
- Check whether the page changed from desktop to mobile layout at the selected width. DPR and viewport width are separate controls.
The browser capture fails or appears incomplete
- Wait for the page’s relevant content to render before capturing. Playwright’s documented screenshot workflow can be paired with navigation wait conditions; pages that load content after a delay may need an explicit wait for that content.
- Try a viewport capture first if a full-page image is exceptionally large. Then determine whether the issue is capture extent or page loading.
- For Firefox, consult the helper documentation for the installed version if a command option is rejected.
Balance detail, file size, and reliability
Use the smallest scale that preserves the detail readers need. Device-pixel output multiplies pixel dimensions and can substantially increase file size, particularly for full-page captures. CSS-pixel output is a practical default for ordinary sharing; use a higher scale for close inspection, archival review, or assets that will be enlarged.
For repeatability, record the URL, viewport dimensions, capture scale, and whether full-page mode was enabled. A screenshot is evidence of a particular rendered page state; responsive layout, delayed content, and page changes can make later captures differ even when the URL is unchanged.
Frequently asked questions
Does a higher DPR make a screenshot include more of the page?
No. DPR affects pixel density. Use full-page capture to include content below the viewport.
