To capture a webpage beyond the visible browser window with Playwright Python, pass full_page=True to page.screenshot(). In synchronous code, call page.screenshot(path="screenshot.png", full_page=True); in asynchronous code, use await page.screenshot(path="screenshot.png", full_page=True). Capture a full page with synchronous Playwright Python
Install Playwright and its browser binaries if they are not already available in your environment:

python -m playwright install chromiumThen navigate to the page and set full_page=True when capturing. This complete example saves a PNG file:

Use the async API when your program is asynchronous
Use Playwright’s async API in an asyncio application or other codebase built around asynchronous operations. The screenshot call needs await, as do navigation and other async Playwright calls:

Wait for the page content you need
A full-page option controls capture scope, not application readiness. A page may still be loading images or rendering content after navigation. If a particular element indicates that the relevant content is ready, wait for it before capturing:

The viewport determines the browser’s rendering dimensions; full_page=True determines whether the screenshot extends beyond that viewport to cover the page. Set a viewport on the browser context before navigating when consistent rendering matters:

Choose a file, bytes, or a different capture scope
Save to a file or process the returned bytes
Passing path saves the screenshot directly. If you omit path, page.screenshot() returns image bytes, which you can pass to other Python code or encode as base64:

Choose an image type and scale deliberately
PNG is a suitable default when lossless image capture matters. The Page screenshot API reference documents output type, scale, timeout, and masking options; its URL is under the /next/ path, so confirm version-sensitive details against the documentation for your installed Playwright release before relying on them. Capture full-page screenshots on pytest failures
For tests using the Playwright pytest plugin, enable screenshot capture and add the full-page option:

Troubleshoot common full-page screenshot problems
- The image stops at the viewport: Confirm that
full_page=Trueis passed topage.screenshot(). Without it, the screenshot is viewport-sized. - Content is missing or incomplete: Navigation may have finished before the page’s relevant content rendered. Wait for an application-specific selector or readiness condition before capturing.
- The page layout differs from the intended result: Check the context’s viewport and device scale factor. They affect rendering conditions, not whether the screenshot covers the full page.
- An element capture omits part of a scrollable region: Locator screenshots capture the currently scrolled content of a scrollable container, not its entire scrollable area. Use a full-page page screenshot if the goal is the whole document.
- The pytest failure image covers only the visible area: Ensure screenshot capture is enabled and include
--full-page-screenshot. - A documented option is unavailable: Check the API reference for the Playwright version installed in your environment. The cited Page screenshot reference is for the
/next/documentation and may not match a released version.
