Use the framework’s document-capture option, not a series of viewport screenshots. In Playwright and Puppeteer, set fullPage: true on page.screenshot(). In Selenium, full-page support depends on the browser, driver, and language binding; the reviewed Firefox Python API provides an explicit full-document method. A full-page image contains the page’s scrollable document, not the browser’s address bar or other browser chrome.
This guide shows runnable examples, explains when to wait or prepare a page, and covers output formats, dynamic content, lazy loading, failures, and practical framework selection.
What “full page” means
A normal screenshot captures the current viewport. A full-page screenshot captures the scrollable document as one image, as if the page were displayed on a screen tall enough to contain it. The result does not include the browser window frame, tabs, address bar, or operating-system chrome.
The option does not automatically make every application state complete. Lazy images, infinite-scroll feeds, animations, consent dialogs, and content loaded only after interaction may still need preparation before capture.

})();Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions.fullPage is a Boolean and defaults to false. Set it explicitly when the document, rather than the viewport, is the required target. The example uses networkidle2 as a navigation wait; it is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that an application has finished every asynchronous task.
Output and image options
pathwrites the image. When a path is supplied, Puppeteer can infer the image type from its extension.typeexplicitly selects the format.qualitycontrols JPEG/WebP quality where supported; it does not apply to PNG.clipcaptures a specified rectangle instead of the entire document.captureBeyondViewportcontrols capture outside the current viewport for applicable modes.omitBackgroundremoves the default background when transparency is desired.
Option availability can change with the installed Puppeteer release. The current reference reviewed for this guide displays version 25.12.0, so verify the API against your project’s installed version.

For pages that load content after scrolling, trigger that behavior before taking the screenshot. A simple bounded scroll loop can encourage lazy elements to render:

Selenium: full-page capture is driver- and binding-dependent
Selenium’s generic screenshot commands describe the current browsing context or an element; they do not promise identical full-document behavior across every browser and binding. The reviewed Python Firefox driver API documents an explicit full-page method.

Why a generic Selenium example can fail
Some drivers implement only viewport or element screenshots. Selenium’s Ruby documentation, for example, states that full-page capture is supported only when the driver provides that capability. If your chosen browser and binding lack a full-document method, you may need a driver-specific feature, a viewport-stitching library, or a different framework. Do not assume that a call named “screenshot” has the same extent everywhere.
Wait for the state you intend to capture
Navigation readiness is not visual readiness
load, domcontentloaded, and network-idle waits describe different milestones. A single-page application may continue rendering after any of them. Prefer a wait tied to the page’s contract, such as a hero selector, a table row count, or a “report ready” marker.

- Use a navigation wait to avoid capturing an empty initial document.
- Wait for a required selector before the screenshot.
- Use a bounded delay only when the page has a known animation or rendering delay.
- For dashboards, authenticate and wait for the data request or visible data state.
Lazy images and infinite scroll
The full-page flag defines the capture extent; it does not establish that every deferred image has loaded. Scroll or otherwise trigger lazy loading, wait for image completion where practical, and use a maximum time for pages that continually append content. If the page never settles, capture a defined range or a known viewport instead of waiting forever.
Animations, popups, and sensitive data
Disable or finish animations when reproducibility matters. Hide cookie notices, chat bubbles, and transient overlays only when doing so is permitted and accurately represents your use case. Mask credentials, personal data, and rotating identifiers. A screenshot can expose anything rendered in the page, including information below the fold.
Format, dimensions, and file handling
- PNG is lossless and suitable for text, diagrams, and pixel comparison.
- JPEG or WebP can produce smaller files for photographic pages; quality settings affect readability and size.
- Very tall documents can create large images. Consider a PDF, a defined clip, or section-level captures when downstream systems impose dimension limits.
- Choose a deterministic filename and store the URL, viewport, browser version, and capture timestamp alongside the artifact for reproducibility.
Full-page capture is a document image, not a print layout. If you need page breaks, paper size, margins, or selectable text, generate a PDF instead of treating one extremely tall bitmap as a document substitute.
Troubleshooting common failures
The image contains only the viewport
Cause: the full-page option was omitted, misspelled, or unsupported by the Selenium driver. Fix: use fullPage: true in Playwright or Puppeteer; with Selenium, call the documented full-page method for the selected driver or verify that the driver supports the capability.
The bottom of the page is blank
Cause: lazy content was never activated, or the capture ran before rendering completed. Fix: scroll in a bounded loop, wait for a meaningful selector or image state, and then capture.

The screenshot stops while the page keeps growing
Cause: an infinite-scroll application has no stable document height. Fix: define a maximum scroll count or capture a known section; do not wait indefinitely for network idle.

Cause: an overlay is part of the rendered page. Fix: handle the consent flow where appropriate, close the widget through its supported UI, or hide a known selector for a controlled visual test.
Fonts or images are missing
Cause: the screenshot started before resources loaded, a request failed, or the headless environment lacks access to the asset. Fix: inspect browser console and network errors, wait for the required resources, confirm authentication and headers, and retry with a reproducible environment.
Selenium reports that the method does not exist
Cause: the binding or driver does not expose full-page capture. Fix: check the exact Selenium version and browser-driver pair, then use a supported driver-specific method or switch to Playwright or Puppeteer for a documented full-page API.

Base the decision on the language already in your codebase, required browser coverage, and the exact driver or binding support you can validate. The documentation supports these feature distinctions, not a universal claim that one framework is best.

No. It captures the web page’s scrollable document, not browser chrome or the operating-system window.

Only after deciding how much content you want. Infinite feeds may never reach a stable height, so use bounded scrolling or capture a defined section.
Why is my Selenium result different from a Playwright result?
Screenshot extent is driver- and binding-dependent in Selenium. Confirm the selected browser’s documented full-page capability rather than assuming generic screenshot commands are equivalent.
When should I create a PDF instead?
Choose PDF when you need paper size, margins, page ranges, landscape orientation, or a document intended for printing rather than one very tall bitmap.
