What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To capture an entire webpage, use your browser’s developer tools rather than the normal screenshot shortcut. Chrome DevTools has separate commands for the visible viewport and the whole document. Firefox Developer Tools offers a full-page button and a configurable :screenshot command. Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot feature captures a full page or a selected area and can copy or save the result.
The exact menu labels can vary with browser version, operating system, device type and market. A full-page capture is still a browser-rendered image: animated content, lazy-loaded images, sticky elements, cross-origin frames and application canvases may not appear exactly as they do after a manual scroll.
Chrome DevTools: capture the whole document
Chrome separates a normal viewport screenshot from a full-size screenshot. The first captures only what is currently visible; the second includes content below and above the viewport that is part of the rendered document.
Full-page procedure
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Open DevTools with
F12,Ctrl+Shift+Ion Windows/Linux, orCommand+Option+Ion macOS. - Open the DevTools command menu with
Ctrl+Shift+P(Windows/Linux) orCommand+Shift+P(macOS). - Type
screenshot. - Choose Capture full size screenshot. Chrome saves the resulting image using its normal download behavior.
You can also use the DevTools three-dot More options menu and select Capture full size screenshot. The neighboring Capture screenshot command is viewport-only, so it is not the right choice when you need the entire document.
Set a responsive width first
If the screenshot is documentation for a particular screen size, turn on the Device Toolbar with Ctrl+Shift+M (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+M (macOS). Enter the required width and height, or select a responsive preset such as 320, 375, 425, 768, 1024, 1440 or 2560 pixels, then run Capture full size screenshot. The width changes line wrapping, breakpoints and the amount of content visible in each rendered segment.

Device Mode is a simulated viewport. It helps test responsive layout, but it is not the same as running the page on a physical phone or tablet.
What Chrome’s command does not guarantee
- Images loaded only after scrolling may remain absent or low resolution.
- Animated banners can be captured at an unpredictable frame.
- Sticky headers may appear repeatedly or cover content, depending on the page’s CSS.
- Cross-origin iframes and app-specific canvases may have restrictions or different rendering.
Open the saved image and inspect important regions instead of assuming that a successful download means every element is correct.
Firefox Developer Tools: button, node capture and command-line controls
Firefox does not show the full-page screenshot button by default. Enable it once in DevTools settings.
Enable the full-page screenshot button
- Open Firefox Developer Tools with
F12orCtrl+Shift+I(Windows/Linux), orCommand+Option+I(macOS). - Open DevTools Settings (the gear icon).
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Close settings. A camera-style screenshot button appears in the toolbox.
- Click the button. Firefox captures the complete page and saves the image to Downloads.
To retain a copy in the clipboard as well, enable Screenshot to clipboard in Firefox’s settings.
Capture one element instead of the entire page
- Open the Inspector and select the element in the HTML pane.
- Open the element’s context menu.
- Choose Screenshot Node.
This is useful for a chart, article body, card or other DOM region whose dimensions are more meaningful than the page’s full height.
Use the Web Console for repeatable captures
Firefox’s Web Console includes a :screenshot helper. For a complete page with a chosen filename:

Useful documented options include:
| Option | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
--fullpage |
Includes content outside the window bounds. | :screenshot --fullpage |
--selector |
Captures one element and its descendants. | :screenshot --selector="main" |
--delay |
Waits before capture for a state or animation. | :screenshot --delay=2 |
--dpr |
Sets device-pixel ratio. | :screenshot --dpr=2 |
--clipboard |
Copies the image to the clipboard. | :screenshot --clipboard |
--file |
Forces file output. | :screenshot --file |
--filename |
Sets a custom PNG filename. | :screenshot --filename=article.png |
For example, this waits two seconds, captures the element matching main, and writes a named file:
Recommended Free Tools
:screenshot --selector="main" --delay=2 --filename=main-content.png
Reusing a filename overwrites the previous image, so use unique names when collecting a sequence.
Microsoft Edge: full webpage or selected area
Edge’s built-in Screenshot feature can capture a full webpage, including content that requires scrolling, or only a selected area. It also supports pen or touch markup before you copy or save the result.
Open Screenshot
- Right-click the page and choose Screenshot, when that command is present.
- Open Edge Settings and find the Screenshot feature.
- Use
Ctrl+Shift+Sas the keyboard shortcut.
Choose the full-page option or drag over a region. In the resulting overlay, add markup if needed, then choose Copy or Save. A copied image can be pasted into applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.
Edge documents that availability and functionality can vary by device type, market and browser version. If the command is missing, update Edge, check the right-click menu and try the Settings entry or shortcut.
Choose the right capture method
| Need | Best built-in choice | Controls documented for the method |
|---|---|---|
| Entire rendered document in Chrome | Chrome DevTools → Capture full size screenshot | Responsive viewport dimensions and Device Mode. |
| Entire page in Firefox | Enabled full-page toolbox button or :screenshot --fullpage |
Delay, DPR, filename, clipboard and selector capture. |
| One DOM element | Firefox Inspector → Screenshot Node, or --selector |
Element boundary and optional delay/filename. |
| Full page with annotation | Edge Screenshot | Full page or selected area, pen/touch markup, copy or save. |
Make a capture accurate and repeatable
Control the viewport
Record the browser, zoom level, viewport width, viewport height and device-pixel ratio with each screenshot. A page captured at 375 CSS pixels can have a completely different navigation and line wrapping from one captured at 1440 pixels. Reset browser zoom to 100% unless your test specifically requires another value.

Wait for page state
Allow fonts, images, data requests and consent dialogs to settle. In Firefox, use --delay when a known delay is sufficient. For pages with lazy loading, manually scroll through the document first, return to the top, and capture again. This can trigger assets that load only near the viewport, but it is not a guarantee for every framework.
Handle overlays and changing content
Dismiss cookie notices, newsletter prompts and chat launchers before capturing if they are not part of the subject. Freeze or pause animations where possible. If a fixed header obscures text, compare a second capture after temporarily disabling the header’s CSS in DevTools; treat that as an inspection aid rather than a faithful production view.
Check very tall pages
Long documents can produce large image files and may expose browser memory or image-dimension limits. Capture a meaningful element, split the page into sections, or export a PDF when a single raster image is impractical. Keep the original URL and capture settings alongside the file so another person can reproduce it.

Troubleshooting full-page screenshots
The result contains only the visible viewport
In Chrome, you probably selected Capture screenshot instead of Capture full size screenshot. In Firefox, use the enabled full-page button or include --fullpage. In Edge, select the full-page mode rather than a dragged region.
The Firefox screenshot button is missing
Open DevTools Settings, expand Available Toolbox Buttons, and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page. Toolbox buttons are separate from Firefox’s general toolbar customization.
Images or sections are blank
The page may lazy-load resources, require scrolling, block automation-like behavior, or still be waiting on network requests. Scroll through once, wait for images to finish, close overlays and retry. If only an embedded frame is blank, its cross-origin or application rendering may prevent an identical capture.

Text is hidden behind a sticky header
This is a property of the page’s rendered CSS, not necessarily a screenshot failure. Capture after the page reaches a stable scroll position, temporarily inspect the header’s positioning in DevTools, or capture the article element alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe image is blurry
Increase the device-pixel ratio where the browser supports it; Firefox exposes --dpr. Remember that a higher DPR increases pixel dimensions and file size. It cannot restore detail that the source image did not provide.
The command or menu is unavailable
Check the browser version, operating system, managed-device policies and window focus. Microsoft specifically notes that Edge Screenshot availability and behavior can vary by device, market and version. Use the browser’s current Help or Settings search to locate the feature when labels differ.

For repeatable captures in scripts or CI, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.
Here is a cURL request (the API documentation is at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/):

Cost, reliability and workflow considerations
Built-in tools
Chrome, Firefox and Edge tools are included with the browsers, making them appropriate for occasional manual evidence, bug reports and responsive checks. They depend on a person’s local browser state, installed fonts, extensions, login session and machine resources, so identical reproduction across a team requires documented settings.
Automated capture
An API is preferable when you need scheduled screenshots, many URLs, controlled headers or cookies, predictable output formats, signed links or a CI pipeline. Use explicit waits and stable test data, retain response metadata, and verify the image rather than treating an HTTP response alone as proof of visual correctness.

Do not place private URLs, credentials or sensitive page content into a capture workflow unless your organization permits it. Browser captures inherit your local authenticated session; automated requests require deliberate handling of authorization headers and cookies.
FAQ
Can I capture a page longer than the screen without an extension?
Yes. Chrome DevTools, Firefox Developer Tools and Edge each provide built-in full-page capture methods, although their controls and availability differ.
Does full-page capture create a PDF?
The browser procedures above produce images. Use the browser’s print-to-PDF workflow when a paginated document is the actual requirement; an API such as ScreenshotNeo can return a PDF directly.
Quick Recap
Why does a full-page screenshot differ from what I see while scrolling?
Capture occurs from the browser’s rendered document state at a particular moment. Lazy loading, animation timing, sticky positioning and asynchronous data can change what appears.
