To capture an entire webpage, use your browser’s built-in full-page tool when available, or install a scrolling screenshot add-on. In Firefox, open the page, choose Take Screenshot, then select Save full page. In Chrome, an add-on such as GoFullPage or FullPage Capture scrolls through the page, stitches the sections, and lets you save the result as PNG, JPEG, or PDF.
Choose the right full-page screenshot method
A full-page screenshot, also called a scrolling screenshot, captures content below the visible browser window. The best workflow depends on your browser and whether you need editing, a particular file type, or repeatable automated captures.

For privacy-sensitive work, review an extension’s current permissions and privacy disclosure. OpenScreenShot’s listing describes local processing and export, but store listings and browser behavior can change.
Capture a full page in Firefox without an add-on
Firefox includes a native Screenshot tool, so no extension is required for the basic task.

- Open the webpage you want to capture.
- Open the page context menu or select Firefox’s Screenshot control in the toolbar.
- Choose Save full page.
- Download the generated image.
The tool scrolls through the document and creates one full-page capture. If the page changes while it is being captured, repeat the process after the page has finished loading. A page with expanding menus, animated content, or lazy-loaded images can produce a result different from what you initially saw.
Use Firefox Developer Tools for a full-page PNG
Firefox’s Developer Tools provide a command-line route for a full-page screenshot and can also capture a single element.
- Open Developer Tools with F12 or your browser’s Developer Tools menu.
- Open the Developer Tools command line.
- Run
:screenshot --fullpage. - Firefox saves the webpage as a PNG in your Downloads folder.
This approach is useful when you want a repeatable command rather than clicking through the Screenshot interface. Mozilla also documents screenshots of individual elements; use the element-focused form when a full document capture is not what you need.
Install a Chrome add-on and capture the entire webpage
Chrome’s ordinary screenshot controls capture the visible viewport, so a scrolling screenshot add-on is the practical route for a complete page.
- Install a full-page screenshot extension from the Chrome Web Store. GoFullPage and FullPage Capture are examples that document this workflow.
- Open the target webpage and wait for its content to finish loading.
- Click the extension’s toolbar icon. If it is hidden, open Chrome’s Extensions menu and pin it.
- Allow the extension to scroll through each visible section and assemble the result.
- When the result tab opens, choose PNG, JPEG, or PDF export.
Keep the page tab active during capture. Closing it, navigating away, or interacting with the page while the extension is scrolling can interrupt the stitch. For pages that load images only when they enter the viewport, wait until the extension has completed its scroll; otherwise some sections may contain placeholders.
GoFullPage in Chrome or Firefox
GoFullPage has official listings for Chrome and Firefox and describes one-click capture of an entire page. Select its toolbar button, let it scroll and assemble the sections, then download the image or PDF from the result view. Its Firefox listing warns that very large captures may be split into separate images, so check the output before sharing it.

FullPage Capture in Chrome
FullPage Capture follows the same basic model: start the extension on the open page, wait while it scrolls and stitches, and export the resulting PNG, JPEG, or PDF. It is a suitable choice when you want a straightforward Chrome add-on rather than browser Developer Tools.
Alternative Firefox add-ons
If Firefox’s built-in tool does not provide the editing or selection controls you need, consider an add-on.
GoFullPage
Use it for one-click full-page capture with image or PDF download. The same extension is documented for Chrome and Firefox, which is useful for teams that use both browsers.
OpenScreenShot
OpenScreenShot’s listing describes three capture modes: full page, visible area, and selected region. It also offers local editing before exporting an image or PDF. “Local” does not remove the need to inspect current permissions, so verify the store disclosure before installing it on a sensitive workstation.
PNG, JPEG, or PDF: which should you save?
- PNG: Usually the clearest choice for interface documentation, text, diagrams, and archival screenshots.
- JPEG: Smaller files can be convenient for quick visual sharing, but compression can soften small text.
- PDF: Better when the recipient expects a document that can be paginated, printed, or combined with other pages.
Export options are supplied by the add-on or browser workflow, not by the webpage itself. If an extension offers only one format in your current version, use a separate image or PDF conversion step rather than assuming every listing has identical controls.
How to get a clean, complete capture
Wait for dynamic content
Allow banners, fonts, images, and client-rendered sections to settle before starting. A capture started too early can include loading placeholders or omit content that appears after a delayed request.

Fixed navigation bars may appear in every stitched section, creating repeated bands. Cookie notices, newsletter prompts, and chat widgets can cover content. Dismiss them before capture when possible. If an overlay returns on each scroll, use an add-on’s editing tools or hide the element with a temporary page-style change.

Check long-page limits
Very tall documents require more memory and may exceed an extension’s maximum canvas size. GoFullPage specifically warns that very large captures can be split into separate images. For a huge page, capture logical sections or use PDF export if the result is easier to review.
Preserve the intended viewport
Responsive layouts change at different widths. Set the browser window to the width your reader will see, then capture. A narrow viewport may turn a desktop navigation bar into a menu and alter line wrapping throughout the image.
Troubleshooting full-page screenshot problems
The capture stops partway down
Cause: The page changed, a script blocked scrolling, or the extension reached a size limit.

Images or sections are blank
Cause: Lazy loading, delayed JavaScript, an ad blocker, or a failed network request.
Fix: Scroll through the page manually once, wait for images to appear, then run the capture. Temporarily test with content-blocking rules adjusted, and restore your privacy settings afterward.

The screenshot contains repeated headers
Cause: A sticky element was captured in each viewport.

Fix: Temporarily disable the sticky header with the site’s own controls or use an editor that can crop repeated bands. Do not remove page elements permanently just to make one screenshot.
The extension button is missing
Cause: The extension is installed but unpinned.
Fix: Open the browser’s Extensions menu and pin the add-on to the toolbar. Confirm that the extension is enabled for the current site.
The result is blurry or text is hard to read
Cause: The capture was resized, exported as a heavily compressed JPEG, or displayed at a reduced zoom.
Fix: Export PNG, keep the original dimensions, and inspect the downloaded file at 100% zoom. Use PDF when the recipient needs selectable, printable text rather than one enormous bitmap.
A private or authenticated page will not capture
Cause: The extension may lack permission for the page, or the content may be inside a protected frame.
Fix: Check the extension’s site access setting, remain signed in, and confirm that the page is not blocking scripts required for rendering. Never grant broad permissions without checking the publisher’s current disclosure.

Practical checklist before you share a capture
- Confirm the URL and account state are correct.
- Dismiss consent, newsletter, and chat overlays where appropriate.
- Wait for lazy-loaded images and fonts.
- Check the full image from top to bottom for missing sections.
- Choose PNG for crisp UI text, JPEG for smaller visual files, or PDF for document delivery.
- Remove private data or credentials before sending the file.
- Keep the original file dimensions and a descriptive filename.
