To capture a full page behind a login, use browser automation that can sign in or load an authenticated browser session, then take a screenshot with full-page capture enabled. Playwright supports both parts: its screenshot option fullPage: true captures the scrollable page, while its authentication guide explains how to reuse saved signed-in state. A screenshot API that receives only a public URL cannot be assumed to have access to your private browser session.
What “full-page” means
A full-page screenshot includes the scrollable page below the visible viewport. In Playwright, set the screenshot option fullPage to true; its default is false. Full-page capture does not sign you in. Authentication and screenshot capture are separate capabilities that must be composed in the same browser context.
Recommended approach: Playwright with an authenticated session
Playwright is a practical starting point for engineers, testers, and technical writers who can run browser automation. You can automate a login flow or load previously saved authenticated state, navigate to the protected page, and capture it. The exact login steps depend on the site.

Reuse a signed-in state
Playwright’s authentication guide documents saving and loading browser state for authenticated tests. Save the state only after signing in, then use it to create an authenticated browser context for navigation and capture. The state file may contain cookies and headers that could let someone impersonate the account, so protect it and do not check it into source control.

Capture the complete scrollable page
Once the authenticated context has loaded the target page, call the page screenshot method with fullPage: true. For example, the capture step in a Playwright script is:

This line assumes page is already open in a browser context with valid access to the page. Add the site-specific sign-in or saved-state setup before navigating; the screenshot option alone does not authenticate.

Choosing a tool for a protected page
Check these requirements before choosing a workflow:
- Session access: Can the tool use an authenticated browser context or perform the site’s login flow?
- Capture scope: Does it capture the full scrollable page, or only the current viewport?
- Workflow fit: Is a code/API workflow suitable, or do you need a browser-tool interface?
- Handling of sensitive state: Where are cookies and other authentication details stored, and who can access them?
- Rendering and page size: Can the page finish loading its dynamic content, and can the browser handle the page’s total dimensions?
Playwright MCP offers a browser-tool interface for taking screenshots of a browser-controlled page, including a full scrollable page. Its screenshot tool can capture the viewport, an element, or a full page; full-page capture cannot be combined with a target element. It still depends on the browser session being able to access the protected page.

Limits and troubleshooting
The capture shows a login page
The browser did not have a valid session for the protected page, or the site required another authentication step. Confirm that the saved state belongs to the right account and domain, or automate the site’s login flow in the same browser context before navigating to the target.
The screenshot stops at the viewport
Check that the screenshot call sets fullPage: true. The option defaults to false, so omitting it captures only the visible viewport.

Login works interactively but fails in automation
Sites may use multi-factor authentication, single sign-on, bot checks, or changing login flows. These require site-specific handling; Playwright’s general documentation does not guarantee compatibility with every site. Verify that the account can complete the required flow in the browser context you use for capture.

Full-page capture can require substantial memory because the browser must allocate an image for the page dimensions. Playwright cautions that pages may crash when allocating too much memory. Try a shorter page or a capture strategy that divides the content into sections if a single full-page image exceeds the browser’s practical limits.
The page is incomplete or dynamic content is missing
Make sure the page has finished rendering before taking the screenshot. Sites that load content as you scroll or update asynchronously may need page-specific waiting or interaction before capture. No general screenshot option guarantees that every site’s dynamic content has loaded.

Security and reliability considerations
- Store authentication-state files as secrets: they can contain cookies and headers that grant account access.
- Keep login and capture in the same browser context; a separate public-URL screenshot request does not inherit your signed-in session.
- Test the target site’s own login requirements and page behavior. Documentation does not establish universal support for every combination of MFA, SSO, bot checks, dynamic rendering, or page size.
- For unusually long pages, account for browser memory limits before relying on a single full-page image.
