Remix does not provide a native full-page screenshot API. Use Playwright to open the rendered Remix route, wait for its content to be ready, then call page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true }). That option captures the page’s full scrollable document rather than only the visible viewport. Playwright’s Page API documents the option; the workflow is browser automation, not a Remix framework feature.
What you need before capturing a Remix page
The screenshot is taken by a browser automation tool after the route renders. Your Remix app must be running somewhere the browser can reach, and you need the target route’s URL. For a local development capture, that is typically the local URL printed when you start the app; for CI or a remote capture service, use a URL accessible from that environment.
- A running Remix app and the exact route to capture.
- Node.js and Playwright installed in the environment running the capture script.
- A readiness condition appropriate to the route, especially if it loads data, images, or other content after the initial page response.
Playwright describes a full-page screenshot as the full scrollable page, as if it fit on a very tall screen. The default screenshot is limited to the current viewport; choose the full-page option when the entire document needs to appear in one image. See the Playwright screenshots guide and screenshots documentation.
Install Playwright and start the Remix app
Install the browser automation package
From the project directory, install Playwright and its Chromium browser:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
npm install --save-dev playwright
npx playwright install chromium
Start Remix in a separate terminal using the start command your project already defines. Keep that process running while the capture script runs. The exact start command varies by project configuration, so use the one in your app’s package scripts rather than assuming a particular Remix setup.
Choose the route URL
Set the route URL to the same page a browser can open, including its path and any query string that changes the content. For example, if your running app is reachable at http://localhost:3000 and you want /products, the capture URL is http://localhost:3000/products. In a container or CI job, localhost refers to that environment itself; it will not automatically refer to a different machine running the app.
Capture the full page with a runnable Playwright script
Create capture.mjs in the project directory. This script launches Chromium, navigates to the route, waits for the document to finish its initial load, optionally waits for a selector you choose, and saves a PNG:

await browser.close();

Run it with the route you want to capture:
TARGET_URL=http://localhost:3000/products node capture.mjs
If the page has a reliable element that only appears after its important content is rendered, provide a CSS selector for it:
TARGET_URL=http://localhost:3000/products READY_SELECTOR='main h1' node capture.mjs
Replace main h1 with an element meaningful to your route. It is not a universal readiness signal: a heading can appear before asynchronously loaded cards or images. The script checks the HTTP response so an error route does not silently become a successful-looking output file; remove or adapt that check only if your app intentionally serves a non-2xx status for the page you need.
Wait for the content that belongs in the image
Taking a screenshot as soon as navigation starts can produce a technically valid image of an incomplete page. In Remix, the route may render a shell before all visible content is ready, and below-the-fold images may load only when the browser scrolls near them. Playwright’s screenshot documentation explains the capture behavior, but does not prescribe a Remix-specific readiness strategy. Decide what “ready” means for your route and encode that condition before capturing.

Use a route-specific signal when possible
Prefer a stable selector or other application-level signal that means the content you care about is present. A visible heading may be enough for a static page, but a page with data-driven sections may need to wait for a result list, a loading indicator to disappear, or an app-specific completion marker. Avoid using an arbitrary short delay as the only readiness check when the page can load at variable speeds.
Handle lazy images and changing content
If images or sections load on scroll, make sure they have loaded before capture. Full-page capture requests the full scrollable document; it does not mean that every application-specific asynchronous task is complete. For content that appears only after scrolling, your script may need to scroll through the page and wait for the content before taking the final screenshot. For pages with animations or frequently changing data, choose a stable capture moment so repeated runs are comparable.

| Capture type | Playwright behavior | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport screenshot | Captures the currently visible browser area. | You need a consistent screen-sized image, such as a view of a specific section or a visual check at a known viewport. |
| Full-page screenshot | With fullPage: true, captures the full scrollable page in one image. |
You need to inspect or share the entire rendered document without stitching separate viewport captures. |
The example sets a 1440-by-900 viewport so the page has a defined browser size before capture, then asks Playwright for the full scrollable page. Change the viewport if your review depends on another layout width. Playwright’s Page API also documents screenshot options for clipping and output behavior, including image format and scale controls; consult the API reference when a fixed region or a particular output is needed rather than assuming the full-page setting changes those requirements.

Save a PDF or choose a different output
The script above saves a PNG because that is the path and output used in the example. If you need another image format or scale, use the supported screenshot options documented by Playwright’s Page API. A screenshot is an image capture; if the deliverable needs pages, paper size, or other document layout controls, use a PDF workflow instead of treating a tall image as a print-ready document.
Keep the output decision tied to how the image will be used. A full-page image can become very tall, so it may be awkward to review, send, or embed at readable size. A viewport image is easier to compare at a fixed size but does not show the entire document. Neither choice substitutes for checking that the correct responsive layout and route state have rendered.

The script cannot connect to the route
Confirm the Remix server is running and that the URL opens from the same environment as Playwright. Check host, port, path, and protocol. If Playwright runs inside a container, a host machine’s localhost may not be reachable as container-local localhost; configure a network-accessible app address for that setup.

The screenshot shows a loading state or missing content
The browser may have finished navigation before route-specific asynchronous content finished rendering. Wait for an element that indicates the content is ready, using READY_SELECTOR in the example, and verify that it represents the part of the page you need. If the missing content is lazy-loaded below the fold, trigger its loading behavior before capture.
The output is only the visible screen
Check that the screenshot call includes fullPage: true and that the script is capturing the intended page object after navigation. Without that option, a standard screenshot covers the viewport, not the full scrollable document.
The file is absent or the script exits with an error
Read the first reported error: a browser launch failure points to the Playwright browser installation or environment, while a navigation timeout or non-2xx response points to the route or server. Run npx playwright install chromium if Chromium was not installed, verify the app is reachable, and rerun with the correct target URL. The script writes full-page.png relative to its working directory.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Full-page captures include more of the document than viewport captures, so extremely long pages can create larger images and take longer to render and save. Keep the viewport and readiness condition consistent when comparing screenshots across runs. In automated jobs, make browser launch and shutdown part of the script’s lifecycle, and set navigation and selector timeouts to fit the app’s actual behavior rather than relying on indefinite waits.
