The most reliable way to capture an entire scrolling webpage from PowerShell is to run Playwright and set fullPage: true. For a one-off capture, use the Playwright CLI command playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.png. For repeatable jobs, call Playwright from a small Node.js script launched by PowerShell.
What “full-page” means
A normal screenshot records only the browser viewport—the portion currently visible. A full-page screenshot expands the capture to the page’s complete scrollable document, including content below the fold. Playwright exposes this explicitly through fullPage: true in its screenshot API and through the CLI’s --full-page switch.
The output is an image file such as PNG, JPEG or WebP. It is not the same as saving HTML: scripts are executed, styles are applied, fonts and images are rendered, and the result is a visual snapshot at a particular time.
Choose the PowerShell workflow that fits
| Method | Best use | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright CLI | One-off captures from a terminal | Short command with --full-page and a named output file |
Options and navigation behavior follow the installed CLI version |
| Playwright API called by PowerShell | Scheduled jobs, tests and repeatable automation | Explicit URL, waits, viewport, scale and output controls | Requires a Playwright runtime and a supported browser |
| Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) | Low-level Chromium integrations | Direct control of layout and screenshot commands | The protocol changes with Chromium and has no backward-compatibility guarantee |
| Selenium WebDriver | Teams that already operate Selenium | Established browser automation stack | Its commonly cited examples demonstrate element screenshots rather than a PowerShell-specific full-page recipe |
Playwright is the clearest default because the full-page behavior is a first-class option instead of a workaround that stitches viewport images together.

Fast one-off capture with the Playwright CLI
- Install a Playwright-supported browser automation environment using the current instructions for your chosen binding and installed CLI version.
- Open PowerShell in the directory where you want the image saved.
- Run:
playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=full-page.png
The command writes the capture to full-page.png. CLI releases differ in how they open or navigate a page, so use the navigation command documented by your installed version before taking the screenshot, or consult playwright-cli --help. Keep the exact --full-page and --filename switches; they are the part that changes a viewport shot into a document-length image.
To make the destination unambiguous in PowerShell, create an absolute path first:
$output = Join-Path $PWD 'full-page.png'
playwright-cli screenshot --full-page --filename=$output
If a CLI build accepts the target URL as a positional argument, append it after the filename according to that build’s help output. When you need a command whose URL, waits and browser settings are all explicit, use the API script below.
Repeatable Playwright capture launched from PowerShell
The following Node.js module performs the navigation and capture. It reads the URL and output path from environment variables, waits for the page to become quiet, and requests a full-page image. Install the Playwright package and its supported browser using the current instructions for your Node.js version before running it.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const url = process.env.TARGET_URL ?? 'https://example.com';
const output = process.env.OUTPUT_FILE ?? 'full-page.png';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 90_000 });
await page.screenshot({
path: output,
fullPage: true,
type: 'png'
});
console.log(`Saved ${output}`);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Save that file as full-page.mjs, then run it from PowerShell:
$env:TARGET_URL = 'https://example.com'
$env:OUTPUT_FILE = (Join-Path $PWD 'example-full.png')
node .full-page.mjs
For a JPEG or WebP result, change type to 'jpeg' or 'webp' and use the matching extension. API calls return image bytes to the path you specify, so a PowerShell job can archive, hash or upload the file after Node exits.
Use a deterministic wait instead of network idle when necessary
networkidle waits for network activity to settle. Analytics streams, advertisements and applications with long-lived connections can prevent that state or make it occur later than you expect. In those cases, navigate with waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', then wait for a page-specific readiness condition in the script:
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 90_000 });
await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30_000 });
await page.waitForTimeout(1_000);
await page.screenshot({ path: output, fullPage: true, type: 'png' });
Replace main with a selector that only appears when the page’s meaningful content is ready. A fixed delay is a fallback, not a guarantee that asynchronous data has loaded.

Make the image complete and repeatable
Lazy-loaded content
Some pages request images only as they approach the viewport. A full-page layout can therefore contain empty image areas unless the page is scrolled or the application exposes a “load all” state. Wait for the page’s content-ready selector, or add a controlled scrolling routine before the screenshot when your site requires it.
Viewport and scale
The viewport controls responsive breakpoints. A 1440-pixel desktop viewport may produce a different layout from a 390-pixel phone viewport. Set it deliberately in newPage so scheduled captures do not depend on a developer’s monitor. The screenshot API also supports CSS scale and device scale. CSS scale keeps roughly one output pixel per CSS pixel and produces smaller files; device scale preserves higher pixel density for retina-style output but increases dimensions and file size.
Dynamic widgets and consent dialogs
Cookie notices, chat launchers, newsletter overlays and rotating banners can cover content or change the page height. For a self-hosted workflow, dismiss them with a selector click, hide them with page CSS, or wait until the application removes them. Make those actions part of the script so every run follows the same sequence.
Authenticated and region-specific pages
If the page requires a login, establish the session before the screenshot and keep credentials out of source control. The same principle applies to locale, timezone and geolocation: configure those values in the browser context rather than relying on whatever defaults happen to exist on the machine running PowerShell.
Very tall documents
A full-page image can be extremely tall. Large dimensions consume memory and may exceed limits in image viewers or downstream APIs. Capture a specific element when the document contains unrelated navigation, or produce a PDF when pagination is more useful than one continuous bitmap.

When to use CDP or Selenium instead
Chrome DevTools Protocol is appropriate when you already have a Chromium controller and need low-level layout metrics or protocol commands. Its “tip-of-tree” nature means a script tied directly to protocol details can break when Chromium changes, so pin compatible browser and client versions.
Selenium remains sensible for an existing Selenium estate, especially when your test infrastructure, drivers and authentication helpers are already built around it. Do not assume that an element-screenshot example is equivalent to a full-document capture; verify the behavior of your specific driver and browser combination.
Troubleshooting full-page captures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Only the visible viewport is saved | The full-page option was omitted or misspelled. | Use fullPage: true in the API or --full-page in the CLI. |
| “Command not found” in PowerShell | The CLI executable is not on PATH, or a different package installed it. |
Run the executable through the package’s documented launcher, check the installed version, and reopen PowerShell after changing PATH. |
| Blank or partially rendered image | The screenshot ran before application data, fonts or images finished loading. | Use a meaningful readiness selector, a bounded delay, or a more suitable navigation wait. |
| Navigation times out | The site is slow, blocked, or keeps connections open. | Increase the navigation timeout within a reasonable bound, switch from networkidle to domcontentloaded, and wait for a specific selector. |
| Cookie banner covers the page | The script has no consent-handling step. | Click the consent button or hide the banner before calling screenshot. |
| Images are missing below the fold | Lazy loading depends on scrolling or an intersection observer. | Trigger the site’s load-all behavior or scroll through the document before capture. |
| Output is too large to open | High device scale or an unusually long page created a huge bitmap. | Use CSS scale, a smaller viewport, a JPEG/WebP output, or capture a meaningful element instead. |
| Different runs produce different layouts | Responsive width, timezone, fonts, ads or live data changed. | Set viewport and context values explicitly, control waits, and remove or block nondeterministic resources where your test policy allows. |
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
- Browser startup: launching Chromium dominates short jobs. Keep one browser process alive when processing several URLs, but create an isolated page or context per capture.
- Waiting: waiting for a real readiness condition improves correctness; unbounded waits reduce throughput. Use explicit timeouts and record failures.
- Image size: full-page height, viewport width and device scale multiply memory use. Choose the smallest dimensions that still answer your visual-review question.
- Retries: retry transient navigation failures, not deterministic selector errors. Save an error log with the URL and timeout so failed jobs can be diagnosed.
- Billing: Playwright itself is software you run; your costs are the machine, browser runtime and any hosted infrastructure. A hosted screenshot API can remove browser maintenance but introduces its own plan limits and pricing.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try when you want an API call instead of maintaining Playwright in PowerShell: it removes consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and does not bill bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads or cache hits. Each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`ScreenshotNeo returned ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('node:fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', data);
Beyond full-page shots, ScreenshotNeo offers element capture by CSS selector, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector hiding, waits for a selector/delay/network idle, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, user-selected cache TTLs, signed links for public images, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

FAQ
Can PowerShell save a webpage as one PNG without scrolling manually?
Yes. Playwright’s full-page mode measures and captures the complete scrollable document, so the script does not need you to take and stitch viewport images by hand.
Why is my full-page image much taller than my monitor?
That is expected: the file represents the document’s scrollable height, not the physical height of your display. Reduce content, capture a specific element, or choose a paginated PDF when a continuous image is impractical.
Should I choose PNG, JPEG or WebP?
PNG preserves sharp text and lossless detail. JPEG is useful when a smaller photographic image matters more than lossless edges. WebP often provides a compact modern image; confirm that your downstream viewer accepts it.
Is CDP more reliable than Playwright for this task?
Not generally. CDP gives lower-level Chromium control but is more sensitive to browser protocol changes. Playwright’s explicit full-page API is usually easier to maintain unless your application already depends on CDP.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a full-page screenshot include content loaded only after scrolling?
Not automatically on every site. If the page uses lazy loading, trigger its loading behavior or scroll through the document before calling the screenshot API.
