Choose the path that matches the required output. Android’s built-in Capture more workflow is user initiated; ScrollCaptureCallback (API 31) integrates custom UI with it; bitmap rendering and PixelCopy are app-controlled techniques.
Choose the right full-page screenshot method

Google documents the user workflow as “Take a scrolling screenshot”: capture the screen normally, tap Capture more, then adjust the crop guides. Availability is described as Android 12+ on most screens that allow scrolling, not every custom renderer or device (Google Android Help).
Let a user capture a long screen with Android
- Open the scrollable screen in your app.
- Use the device’s normal screenshot gesture or hardware-key combination.
- Tap Capture more in the screenshot controls.
- Drag the crop handles to include the required content and save or share the result.
This is the correct solution when a person needs a one-off image. Your Kotlin code does not receive the resulting tall bitmap through this interface. If Capture more is absent, the device, Android version, screen type or content may not support scrolling capture.
Support system scrolling capture in a custom view
Standard View-based applications generally work with Android’s scrolling capture in common cases. Highly customized or non-View rendering may need ScrollCaptureCallback, added in API 31. The API contract lets the system discover capture bounds, request image regions, notify your view that capture starts or ends, and cancel a request. Your implementation must return the window to its original state—at minimum, its original scroll position—after capture (ScrollCaptureCallback reference).

Implementation responsibilities
- Report the portion of the window that can be captured.
- Map each requested rectangle to the correct scroll offset and rendered pixels.
- Handle start, end and cancellation callbacks without leaving the UI scrolled.
- Restore transient changes such as offsets, clipping or animation state.
- Guard API-31 calls with
Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.Swhen your minimum SDK is lower.
The exact callback methods and registration pattern depend on the target SDK and view implementation. Verify the signatures against the API reference linked above rather than copying an outdated snippet. The platform source establishes the contract, but it does not provide a universal adapter for every custom renderer or Compose hierarchy.
Render an app-owned tall bitmap
Use this route when your app must save, upload or process the image without presenting Android’s screenshot UI. First determine whether all content can be laid out and drawn at once. A normal viewport only contains visible pixels; simply calling view.draw(canvas) usually captures that viewport, not an entire scroll range. For a long document, measure or render each section into a bitmap-sized canvas, or move the scroll position and stitch deliberately while preventing duplicate or missing rows.
View-based content
- Calculate a bounded output width and total content height. Avoid allocating dimensions from untrusted page data without limits; a huge bitmap can exhaust heap memory.
- Lay out the content at the intended width before drawing.
- Draw onto a correctly sized
Bitmapand save it as PNG, JPEG or WebP according to your quality and transparency needs. - For very tall results, tile the render and encode tiles or a PDF instead of requiring one enormous in-memory bitmap.
There is no single official Kotlin helper that makes every View, Compose surface, WebView and hardware-rendered component complete off-screen. Test fixed headers, nested scrolling containers, lazy lists, animations, fonts and images at the exact content state you intend to capture.

WebView
The WebView reference points to drawing with onDraw(Canvas) for a bitmap snapshot. Do not make capturePicture() your default: it was deprecated in API 19. saveWebArchive(String) produces a web archive, not a visual bitmap (WebView reference).
Before promising a complete page image, account for JavaScript loading, lazy images, fixed-position elements, nested scroll regions and consent dialogs. A drawing operation captures what the WebView has rendered; it does not guarantee that every remote resource or below-the-fold element has finished loading.
Use PixelCopy when the pixels come from a Surface or Window
PixelCopy asynchronously copies the current pixels of a Surface, SurfaceView or Window into a destination Bitmap. It is useful when ordinary View drawing omits a hardware or surface-backed layer. It still captures the selected current region only: it does not traverse a scroll container, discover document height or create a full-page image by itself (PixelCopy reference).

Handle the completion status and keep the destination valid until the callback runs. The reference documents failures for missing source data, invalid or destroyed surfaces, timeouts and invalid destinations. Retry only when the source is expected to become valid; a destroyed surface requires recreating the view or window.
Practical decision checklist
- One-time user image: use Android 12+ Capture more.
- Custom UI that must participate in that UI: implement API-31
ScrollCaptureCallbackand restore state. - File generated by your app: render content intentionally, with explicit dimensions and memory limits.
- Surface or window pixels: use PixelCopy for the current visible region, then implement your own scrolling or tiling if needed.
- WebView: use drawing for a bitmap, not deprecated
capturePicture(); distinguish a visual capture from a web archive.

Troubleshooting
“Capture more” is missing
Confirm Android 12 or later and try a standard scrollable screen. The system documents support for most, not all, scrollable screens. Custom renderers may not expose usable scroll-capture data.
The result contains only the visible viewport
That is expected from a normal View draw or PixelCopy call. Render the complete content explicitly, or integrate ScrollCaptureCallback for system capture.

A WebView image is blank or incomplete
Wait for page resources and JavaScript to finish, then draw the WebView. Check lazy loading, fixed elements and nested scrollers. Avoid deprecated capturePicture().

PixelCopy returns an error
Check that the source surface or window is created and not destroyed, the destination bitmap is valid, and the request completes before you release either object. Report the status instead of saving a presumed-valid bitmap.
Custom scroll capture leaves the screen displaced
Save the starting scroll position and restore it in the end and cancellation paths. Also restore clipping, translation and any temporary animation or rendering state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Kotlin call Android’s Capture more feature directly?
No. Capture more is a user-facing system screenshot workflow. Kotlin can participate through ScrollCaptureCallback on API 31+ but does not receive the system’s final image through that UI.
Does PixelCopy create a full-page screenshot?
No. It copies current pixels from a surface or window. Scrolling, layout expansion and stitching remain your responsibility.
Is WebView.saveWebArchive a screenshot format?
No. It saves a web archive. Use WebView drawing when the required output is a bitmap.
Which Android version introduced ScrollCaptureCallback?
The callback was added in API level 31, corresponding to Android 12.
