If you need repeatable automation, use a Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) client and call Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport enabled. A normal website’s JavaScript console cannot call that privileged protocol method directly.
Choose the right browser capture method
“Browser console” can mean either the developer tools attached to a browser window or the JavaScript console running inside a page. That distinction matters: Chrome’s full-page command is in the DevTools Command Menu, Firefox offers a screenshot helper in its Web Console, and protocol automation requires a CDP connection rather than an ordinary page-console command.

For a one-off image, start with the browser’s built-in workflow. Choose CDP when a script or application must control capture and save or process the result. Use a browser screenshot API instead if you want to send a URL to a service rather than set up browser automation.
Take a full-page screenshot in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page you want to capture in Chrome.
- Open DevTools. You can use the browser’s usual DevTools shortcut or open it through Chrome’s menu.
- Open the Command Menu with
Ctrl+Shift+Pon Windows or Linux, orCmd+Shift+Pon macOS. - Type
screenshotin the Command Menu. - Select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome saves the capture through its normal download flow.
This command captures the page, not the browser’s tabs, address bar, or surrounding window. It includes content that is outside the current viewport. Chrome’s documented command is specifically named Capture a full size screenshot; a regular visible-area capture is not the same operation.

If you need only part of the page
Use an area or node capture rather than the full-size command when the deliverable is a particular region or element. These are different capture modes, so check the selected command before saving. Chrome documents that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked; keep DevTools docked if the area-capture option is unavailable.
Take a full-page screenshot in Firefox
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Open the Web Console from Firefox Developer Tools.
- Enter
:screenshot --fullpageand press Enter. - Find the saved image using the filename or browser file-handling behavior shown for your capture.
Mozilla’s Web Console helper is :screenshot; adding --fullpage includes content outside the current window bounds. Firefox also supports these options:

Combine options when useful, such as a full-page capture with a filename and delay. If you save a later capture using the same filename, Firefox overwrites the existing file, so choose a new name or move the previous image first.
Automate capture with the Chrome DevTools Protocol
CDP is the programmatic route for controlling a Chromium-based browser. A client attaches to the browser’s DevTools Protocol connection, issues a method, receives the result, and writes or processes the returned data. The protocol method is Page.captureScreenshot; captureBeyondViewport requests content beyond the viewport, and the method supports png, jpeg, and webp formats. The response contains base64-encoded image data.

It also is not a complete runnable script: the transport, browser attachment, protocol-session setup, response decoding, and file writing depend on the CDP client you choose. Your client must connect to a browser through CDP before sending the method.
What your automation has to do
- Launch or connect to a browser that exposes a CDP connection, using the setup supported by your chosen client.
- Attach to the page’s protocol session and issue
Page.captureScreenshotwith the required parameters. - Decode the returned base64 image data and write it to the desired destination.
- Set device emulation or scale in the client if you need a high-density output; the capture method and browser emulation settings are separate concerns.
- Wait for the page state you want before capture. The protocol call itself does not guarantee that asynchronous content, lazy images, or an animation has finished.
Understand full-page capture limits
“Full page” means capturing content beyond the currently visible viewport; it does not guarantee that every site will render identically in every capture. A screenshot records the page’s rendered state at capture time, so timing and page behavior affect the result.
- Lazy-loaded images: Some sites load images only when they approach the viewport. A capture taken before those images load can include empty spaces or missing images. Scroll through the page or wait for the content before capturing; for automation, make the wait part of your workflow.
- Sticky and fixed elements: A fixed header or floating control may appear differently in a tall capture than it does while scrolling normally. Check the resulting image, especially if the page has persistent overlays.
- Animations and changing content: A moving element, rotating banner, live feed, or timed popup can be captured mid-change. Prepare the desired state and use Firefox’s delay option or an automation wait where appropriate.
- Very tall documents: Large pages can take longer to render and produce large output files. Browser behavior and available resources vary; the documented commands do not promise identical results for every site.
- Consent banners and popups: Browser-native capture records what is on the page. Dismiss or accept overlays as appropriate before capture if you want unobstructed content.
Fix common capture problems
Chrome does not show the full-size command
Open DevTools’ Command Menu with the platform shortcut and search for screenshot, then select the full-size option rather than a visible-area or node capture. Command labels and shortcuts can vary across browser versions, so search the menu instead of relying on a remembered position.
Chrome area capture is missing or unavailable
Keep DevTools docked to the browser. Chrome documents that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked. For a whole-document image, use the full-size screenshot command instead of area capture.

Firefox output misses an image or element
Make sure the content has loaded before running the command. Try --delay if the target needs time to appear, or use --selector to target the intended element. A selector must match the page’s actual CSS structure; if it does not, revise the selector or capture the full page.
The previous Firefox image disappeared
Check whether the new capture reused the same --filename. Firefox warns that another capture saved to that filename overwrites the previous file. Give each capture a distinct filename or preserve the old one elsewhere.
CDP JSON does nothing in the page console
That is expected: the example is a protocol request, not page JavaScript. Use a CDP client that attaches to the browser, or choose the manual DevTools or Firefox workflow.
The capture is blank, incomplete, or taken too early
Confirm that the page finished loading and that any required content or interaction state is present. Wait for lazy-loaded images and delayed components; for Firefox, add a delay, and for automation, wait in the client before issuing the capture call. Inspect a new image before replacing an earlier known-good capture.

Cost, performance, and repeatability
Built-in browser methods
Chrome and Firefox include the manual capture workflows described above, so a one-off screenshot does not require a separate screenshot service. The trade-off is that a person must prepare the page, trigger capture, and handle the output. CDP can make that process repeatable, but the browser launch or connection, page readiness checks, response decoding, and storage are responsibilities of the automation you build.

- Record the target URL and the capture method alongside important screenshots.
- For a manual capture, prepare the page first: finish any interaction, dismiss overlays if desired, and wait for below-the-fold content.
- For automation, make readiness explicit rather than assuming a page-load event means every image or widget is ready.
- Save distinct outputs when comparing page states; Firefox’s repeated filename behavior can overwrite a previous capture.
- Review the resulting image at its actual dimensions, particularly for very long pages and high-density output.

Can I run `Page.captureScreenshot` directly in Chrome’s page console?
No. It is a CDP method and needs a protocol client attached to the browser; the JSON request shape is not page-console JavaScript.
Does a full-page screenshot include the browser tabs and address bar?
No. These workflows capture the rendered page rather than the surrounding browser window.
Can I copy a Firefox screenshot to the clipboard instead of saving it?
Yes. Use Firefox’s `:screenshot –clipboard` option; add `–fullpage` if you need content outside the viewport.
