To make Selenium screenshots more comparable across operating systems, keep the browser and test environment controlled, set a deliberate window size, verify the resulting viewport, and capture only after the page is visually ready. These steps improve repeatability; they do not guarantee pixel-identical output from different operating-system renderers.
What makes Selenium screenshots consistent?
Consistency is a reproducibility problem, not a single Selenium setting. Fix the inputs you can, record them with each screenshot, and run visual checks on the operating-system and browser combinations your product supports.
Selenium’s WebDriver controls browsers through a platform- and language-neutral protocol. That lets the same kind of automation work across platforms, but it does not make each platform render every pixel identically. The W3C WebDriver document dated July 2, 2026 is a Working Draft, not a final Recommendation; Selenium’s overview separately describes WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation. Selenium notes that screen resolution can affect how an application renders and provides controls to resize the browser window. Maximizing is not a substitute for a fixed size: the available screen area can differ between developer machines and build agents. See Selenium’s window and tab documentation.

Control the inputs that affect a capture
Keep browser and driver versions stable
Choose the browser family and version the test is intended to cover. Use the same browser and driver versions when creating and comparing baselines where possible, and record both versions with the artifacts. ChromeDriver sessions can be configured with ChromeOptions and browser arguments; see ChromeDriver capabilities and ChromeOptions.
Set a fixed window size and verify the viewport
Use a deliberate width and height rather than maximizing. The requested browser-window dimensions are not necessarily the page’s inner CSS viewport dimensions: browser chrome and driver behavior can affect the result. Check window.innerWidth and window.innerHeight in the target environment, and use those measured values when diagnosing mismatches.

Record the rest of the test environment
For each capture, retain the operating-system image, browser and driver versions, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, installed fonts, locale, timezone, color settings, and relevant application state or test data. Keep these fixed where practical. These are useful controlled-test variables, but the cited official documentation does not quantify how much each one contributes to cross-OS pixel differences.

Wait for a meaningful ready state
Capture after the application has reached a state suitable for comparison: required data is loaded, fonts and images are ready, animations have settled, and asynchronous content has completed. Prefer an application-specific condition, such as a visible ready indicator, over relying only on an arbitrary sleep. A fixed delay can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
Capture a viewport screenshot with Selenium in Python
This example fixes the browser-window dimensions, navigates to a page, waits for a meaningful element, and saves the current browsing context as a PNG. Replace the URL and readiness selector with those used by your test.

- Define the intended coverage. List the operating systems and browser versions the product supports; do not assume one machine represents every target.
- Pin and record the environment. Keep browser and driver versions stable, record the OS image and other relevant settings, and retain that metadata beside each image.
- Set and measure the viewport. Request a fixed window size, then log the actual inner viewport and device pixel ratio on each target environment.
- Stabilize page state. Wait for application readiness, loaded assets, and settled animations before capture.
- Compare using an explicit tolerance. Decide what visual differences matter to your product and test against that threshold on every supported OS/browser combination. Selenium does not enforce pixel parity for you.
