To capture many web pages reliably, put their URLs in a list, automate one browser capture per URL, and save each result with a numbered filename. If you need one report PDF, treat assembling and checking the captured pages as a separate step: bulk screenshot tools commonly create individual images or PDFs, not necessarily one combined document.

Choose the output you actually need

A screenshot records a page’s visual appearance; a browser-generated PDF is laid out for printing. Choose per-page images for visual review, one PDF per page for separate print-ready records, or a compiled PDF when readers need a single report. A full-page screenshot includes content below the viewport, but a very long page can become an unwieldy image.

For a repeatable batch, keep a URL list and an explicit mapping from each URL to its output filename. This mapping preserves order and makes failures easier to locate.

Pick a bulk-capture method

Method Good fit Bulk behavior and output Important consideration
Chrome Headless Simple command-line captures or a small script around Chrome Its screenshot and PDF flags capture an individual target page; loop over the URL list yourself. Use a wait appropriate to the site. A timeout or virtual-time budget controls waiting but does not prove that all page-specific content has finished rendering. Chrome Headless command-line reference
Playwright Scripted browser automation, especially when pages need navigation waits or interaction Can save full-page screenshots and PDFs; its CLI also documents full-page screenshots and PDF export. PDF output uses print media by default. Emulate screen media before PDF export if preserving screen styles is important. Page API · Screenshots & PDF
webshot2 R workflows with multiple URLs Accepts a vector of URLs and captures in parallel, with output naming and viewport controls. Its PDF output uses browser printing; selector, clipping, expansion, and zoom options do not apply to PDF output. webshot2 manual
shot-scraper Configured command-line batches Its multi workflow maps URLs to output entries. Set distinct output names and verify resulting order. shot-scraper documentation

Capture a URL list with Chrome Headless

Chrome’s command-line flags operate on a page at a time, so a loop supplies the bulk behavior. The following Bash example reads one URL per line, numbers files in input order, captures a PDF per URL, and stops on a failed Chrome command. It assumes Chrome is available as google-chrome on your PATH; substitute the executable name used by your installation.

#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail

mkdir -p captures
index=0
while IFS= read -r url || [[ -n "$url" ]]; do
  [[ -z "$url" || "$url" == #* ]] && continue
  index=$((index + 1))
  printf -v name '%03d' "$index"
  google-chrome --headless --disable-gpu
    --timeout=10000
    --no-pdf-header-footer
    --print-to-pdf="captures/${name}.pdf"
    "$url"
done < urls.txt

Create urls.txt with one fully qualified URL per line; blank lines and lines beginning with # are skipped. The 10,000-millisecond timeout is an example bound, not a universal readiness guarantee. Increase or replace it when a site needs more time, or use a page-specific wait in browser automation when content appears asynchronously. Chrome documents --screenshot for image output, --window-size for screenshot dimensions, --timeout for bounded waiting, and --virtual-time-budget to advance time-dependent page code before printing. The screenshot flag saves screenshot.png in the current working directory by default; the PDF flag saves output.pdf there by default. Chrome Headless command-line reference

To capture an image instead of a per-page PDF, replace the PDF option with screenshot options, for example --window-size=1440,1000 --screenshot="captures/${name}.png". This captures a viewport-sized image unless you configure a full-page capture through a tool that supports it; do not assume a fixed viewport includes below-the-fold content.

Use Playwright when pages need more control

Playwright is useful when each page needs an explicit navigation condition or full-page capture. Install Playwright for your chosen language and its browser binaries according to the official setup instructions. This JavaScript example expects a urls.txt file in the working directory, saves one full-page PNG per URL, waits for the page load event, and continues to the next URL if one page fails.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { readFile, mkdir } from 'node:fs/promises';

const urls = (await readFile('urls.txt', 'utf8'))
  .split(/r?n/)
  .map(line => line.trim())
  .filter(line => line && !line.startsWith('#'));

await mkdir('captures', { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 } });

try {
  for (const [index, url] of urls.entries()) {
    const name = String(index + 1).padStart(3, '0');
    try {
      await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'load', timeout: 30000 });
      await page.screenshot({ path: `captures/${name}.png`, fullPage: true });
      console.log(`Saved ${name}: ${url}`);
    } catch (error) {
      console.error(`Failed ${name}: ${url}`, error);
    }
  }
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Use waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' if the load event is held up by resources that do not matter to your capture, or a site-specific selector wait when the relevant content appears after initial navigation. A fixed delay can help with known animations or delayed rendering, but it can also waste time or still miss late content. Choose the condition based on what must appear in the report.

For PDFs, use page.pdf() after navigation. It renders using print CSS by default. If screen styling is required, call await page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' }) before PDF export, then inspect the result for print-specific page breaks, margins, clipping, and color. Browser PDF layout is not automatically identical to a screenshot. Playwright Page API

Turn the captures into one report PDF

  1. Prepare and order inputs. Keep a stable URL list and use a zero-padded sequence such as 001-example-home.pdf so ordinary filename sorting preserves the intended order.
  2. Choose the capture format. Use images when the report should show a visual state, or browser PDFs when each page needs print-style layout. Decide whether full-page images are legible at the final report size.
  3. Capture with consistent settings. Keep viewport dimensions and browser version consistent for comparable pages. Record failures rather than silently treating missing files as successful captures.
  4. Assemble if a single file is required. Merge the per-page PDFs with a PDF assembly tool available in your environment; the browser capture commands above do not create a universal combined report. For screenshots, place images into a document or PDF workflow that controls page size and scaling.
  5. Inspect the finished report. Open it and check page order, blank pages, clipped edges, readability, headers and footers, and whether dynamic or lazy-loaded content actually appeared.

Timing, reliability, and cost considerations

Waiting is part of correctness

Navigation completing is not always the same as the content you care about being ready. Pages may load images lazily, populate results after an API response, or render after a delay. Chrome’s timeout and virtual-time controls are useful bounds, not site-aware completion detectors. Playwright lets a script wait for a relevant selector or other page condition; choose a condition tied to the content that matters.

Parallel capture has trade-offs

Parallel capture can reduce wall-clock time, and webshot2 documents parallel capture for a vector of URLs. However, a large batch can consume more browser and network resources, and some sites may rate-limit automated requests. Start with a modest batch size, preserve per-URL results, and retry only failures rather than rerunning successful captures unnecessarily.

Estimate work from outputs, not just URLs

A list of URLs can produce images, individual PDFs, or both, and a compiled report adds an assembly and review step. No measured speed or accuracy figures are established by the cited product documentation, so estimate runtime using a small representative batch from your own sites rather than assuming a published benchmark.

Common problems and fixes

  • The screenshot is blank or incomplete: navigation may have finished before the relevant content rendered. Wait for a page-specific selector or adjust the timeout, then compare a representative result manually.
  • Below-the-fold content is missing: a viewport screenshot only covers the visible area. Use a documented full-page screenshot feature, and check whether lazy-loaded elements appear when the page is scrolled or otherwise activated.
  • A PDF looks different from the page: browser PDF export follows print styling by default in Playwright. Emulate screen media if that is the intended appearance, or adjust the site’s print styles and check page breaks and margins.
  • Files overwrite one another or appear out of order: generate a unique, zero-padded filename from the URL’s position in the input list and keep a log mapping filenames to URLs.
  • One URL breaks the whole batch: handle errors per URL, log the failed address and error, and rerun only failed entries after correcting the cause.
  • The compiled PDF has clipping, blank pages, or unreadable scaling: inspect page size and image scaling in the assembly step; browser-generated PDFs and images have different layout behavior.

Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For a list of URLs, call its endpoint once per URL from a loop; it returns an image or PDF, but the final single-report assembly remains a separate step. This cURL example captures one URL as WebP; replace the URL with each entry in your batch. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a bulk screenshot command automatically create one combined PDF?

Not necessarily. The Chrome loop here creates one PDF per URL; combine those files in a separate assembly step.

Should I use a full-page screenshot or a PDF?

Use a full-page screenshot when you need a visual image of content below the viewport. Use PDF when print layout and page-sized output are more useful.

Can I rely on a fixed wait to capture every dynamic page correctly?

No. A fixed delay is only a timing allowance; for important dynamic content, wait for a page-specific condition and inspect the result.
