For a small or highly customized batch, run Playwright in Python and loop over your URLs. For a managed workflow, submit the list to a provider’s documented batch endpoint, save the returned batch ID, and poll (or subscribe to server-sent events) until each result is complete. The screenshot call is only one part of a reliable bulk system: you also need URL input, naming, retries, progress tracking, and an output manifest.

Choose the capture route

Decision axis Playwright in Python Hosted screenshot API
Capture control Page and locator screenshots, full-page mode, clipping, formats, scale, masking, animation control, and path or byte output. Published options include viewport, format, full-page capture, selector, wait strategy, CSS/JavaScript injection, locale, geolocation, cache and timeouts.
Bulk orchestration You implement the loop, queue, retries and concurrency around per-page calls. The reviewed provider documents one multi-URL batch request with progress polling or server-sent events.
Output Write directly to a path or receive bytes for processing. The provider’s single-shot example returns a screenshot URL; confirm batch storage and retention in its current documentation.
Limits No universal throughput or machine-size recommendation is established by the cited Playwright pages. The vendor publishes free-plan limits of 60 requests per minute and 500 screenshots per month (documentation reviewed September 29, 2026). Recheck before production use.

There is no independent benchmark here that proves one route is faster or cheaper. Pick Playwright when the browser must run in your infrastructure or you need browser-level control. Pick a hosted batch API when you prefer managed rendering and an explicit job lifecycle.

Prepare a local Playwright capture

Install the package and browser

python -m venv .venv
# macOS/Linux
source .venv/bin/activate
# Windows PowerShell: .venvScriptsActivate.ps1
pip install playwright
playwright install

The official Python guide documents both synchronous and asynchronous screenshot calls. The page reference shows the lifecycle: launch a browser, create a context and page, navigate with page.goto(), capture, then close the browser.

Capture one page synchronously

from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright

with sync_playwright() as p:
    browser = p.chromium.launch()
    page = browser.new_page(viewport={"width": 1440, "height": 900})
    page.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="load")
    page.screenshot(path="example.png", full_page=True)
    browser.close()

full_page=True captures the full scrollable document instead of only the visible viewport. Omit it for a viewport shot. You can also request a format such as PNG, JPEG or WebP, set a quality value for lossy formats, clip a rectangle, disable animations, mask locators, or return bytes rather than writing a file.

Capture an element or receive bytes

from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright

with sync_playwright() as p:
    browser = p.chromium.launch()
    page = browser.new_page()
    page.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="domcontentloaded")

    hero = page.locator("main")
    hero.screenshot(path="main.png")
    image_bytes = page.screenshot(type="webp", full_page=False)
    with open("viewport.webp", "wb") as f:
        f.write(image_bytes)
    browser.close()

A locator screenshot is useful when a full document contains navigation or unrelated content. Returning bytes lets you resize, hash, upload, or inspect an image before deciding where to store it.

Build a bulk loop with safe output and retries

Playwright supplies the per-page capture primitive; the queue, retry policy, concurrency and manifest are application code. The following synchronous example gives each URL a deterministic filename, records status, and continues after an individual failure.

from pathlib import Path
from urllib.parse import urlparse
import hashlib
import json
from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright, TimeoutError as PlaywrightTimeoutError

URLS = [
    "https://example.com",
    "https://www.python.org/",
]
OUT = Path("shots")
OUT.mkdir(exist_ok=True)

def filename(url: str) -> str:
    parsed = urlparse(url)
    host = parsed.netloc.replace(":", "_") or "page"
    digest = hashlib.sha1(url.encode("utf-8")).hexdigest()[:10]
    return f"{host}_{digest}.png"

results = []
with sync_playwright() as p:
    browser = p.chromium.launch()
    context = browser.new_context(viewport={"width": 1440, "height": 900})
    page = context.new_page()
    page.set_default_navigation_timeout(30_000)

    for url in URLS:
        path = OUT / filename(url)
        record = {"url": url, "path": str(path), "status": "failed"}
        try:
            page.goto(url, wait_until="domcontentloaded")
            page.screenshot(path=str(path), full_page=True)
            record["status"] = "ok"
        except PlaywrightTimeoutError as exc:
            record["error"] = f"navigation timeout: {exc}"
        except Exception as exc:
            record["error"] = str(exc)
        results.append(record)

    browser.close()

Path("manifest.json").write_text(json.dumps(results, indent=2), encoding="utf-8")

For production batches, add an explicit retry count with backoff, keep the original URL in every record, and write the manifest incrementally so an interrupted run can resume. Avoid using only a slug as a filename: different URLs can share a path, and query strings can contain characters that are unsafe on some filesystems.

Use the asynchronous API for controlled concurrency

Async Playwright is appropriate when you have many independent pages and want several in flight. There is no universal safe concurrency number; it depends on available CPU and memory, target sites, network conditions and any service terms. Start conservatively, measure failures and resource use, then adjust.

asyncio.run(main())

Wait for the page you actually need

A navigation completing does not guarantee that a chart, hero image or client-rendered table is ready. Playwright supports navigation waits, selector waits, explicit delays and other page-level controls. Prefer a meaningful selector when one exists; use a delay only when the page has no reliable readiness signal. For long pages with lazy images, scroll or otherwise trigger the page’s loading behavior before taking a full-page shot, and validate a sample of outputs rather than assuming every image loaded.

On a hosted service, the reviewed vendor documents networkidle2 as its default wait strategy and a 30,000 ms navigation timeout. Those defaults may not suit dynamic sites, so select a selector-based wait or deliberate delay and test the result for your pages.

Submit multiple URLs to a hosted batch API

The reviewed provider documents POST /api/v1/screenshot/batch. A batch request accepts multiple URLs and shared capture settings, returns a batch ID, and exposes progress through a polling endpoint or server-sent events. Keep the API key in an environment variable or secret store, not in source control.

import os
import requests

endpoint = os.environ["SCREENSHOT_BATCH_ENDPOINT"]
key = os.environ["SCREENSHOT_API_KEY"]
payload = {
    "urls": ["https://example.com", "https://www.python.org/"],
    "viewport": {"width": 1440, "height": 900},
    "format": "png",
    "full_page": True,
    "wait_until": "networkidle2",
}
response = requests.post(
    endpoint,
    json=payload,
    headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {key}"},
    timeout=60,
)
response.raise_for_status()
batch = response.json()
print("batch id:", batch["id"])

Use the exact progress URL and response fields from your provider’s current documentation. Poll at a measured interval, persist the batch ID, and make your downloader idempotent so a process restart does not duplicate files. If the service offers server-sent events, consume those updates with a reconnect strategy and still retain a final status check.

Common shared options include viewport, output format, full-page mode, device scale factor, image quality, CSS or JavaScript injection, selector capture, wait-for-selector, extra delay, geolocation, timezone, locale, cache and timeout. Apply the same settings deliberately across a batch; changing viewport or wait behavior can make visual comparisons invalid.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is the first API to try when you want a single managed endpoint or an agent-friendly workflow: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and its paid plans start at $5.

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The response identifies outcomes with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed; bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. It also provides full-page and lazy-image capture, CSS-selector capture, device presets and arbitrary viewports, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS/JavaScript, click actions, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agent, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable cache TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Troubleshoot failed batches

Navigation timeout

Cause: the page or a blocking third-party resource did not finish within the timeout. Fix: increase the timeout for that site, use a selector that signals readiness, or capture after a controlled delay. Record the URL and timeout in the manifest.

Blank or incomplete screenshot

Cause: client rendering or lazy loading had not completed. Fix: wait for a visible content selector, trigger scrolling for lazy content, and compare viewport and full-page modes.

Cookie dialog or chat widget covers content

In Playwright, locate and click the consent control or hide the overlay with page-specific code. A managed service may offer built-in removal; confirm the setting and inspect the resulting image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rate limiting or resource exhaustion

Cause: too many concurrent pages or provider requests. Fix: lower the semaphore, add exponential backoff, honor retry-after responses, and checkpoint progress. Do not treat a vendor’s free-plan quota as a production throughput guarantee.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Duplicate or overwritten files

Cause: filenames derived only from a title or hostname. Fix: include a stable hash of the complete URL (and, if relevant, capture settings) and keep a manifest mapping each input to its output.

Cost, performance and reliability decisions

  • Playwright has no per-screenshot API charge, but you operate browser binaries, CPU, memory, networking, storage and retries.
  • A hosted API shifts browser operations to the provider and may simplify batch tracking, but quotas, retention, pricing and terms can change. Verify them immediately before committing.
  • PNG preserves detail but is larger; JPEG or WebP can reduce storage when compression artifacts are acceptable. Retina scale improves sharpness while increasing bytes and rendering work.
  • Cache deliberately. Reusing a cached result can save work, but it is unsuitable when freshness is the purpose of the batch.
  • For auditability, store the source URL, timestamp, viewport, format, wait settings, status, error and output checksum alongside each image.

FAQ

Can Playwright take screenshots of several URLs in one built-in call?

The cited references document per-page screenshot calls, not a built-in bulk queue. Implement the loop or queue yourself, or use a provider’s batch endpoint.

Should every page use networkidle2?

No. It is documented as one provider’s default, but pages with analytics, ads or persistent connections may never become meaningfully idle. A selector that represents the content you need is often more dependable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should a batch result contain?

At minimum: original URL, capture settings, status, output location or URL, timestamp and error details. This makes retries and later visual comparisons reproducible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Playwright take screenshots of several URLs in one built-in call?

The cited references document per-page screenshot calls, not a built-in bulk queue. Implement the loop or queue yourself, or use a provider’s batch endpoint.

Should every page use networkidle2?

No. It is one provider’s documented default, not a universal requirement. Prefer a selector that signals the content you need.

The Bottom Line

Use Playwright when you need infrastructure-level browser control; use a documented batch API when managed rendering and job tracking matter more. In either case, treat waits, retries, naming and manifests as part of the screenshot system—not afterthoughts.
